This book is a waste of time. I can describe it to you very accurately. It is the official instruction manual set in larger type, on thicker paper, with a lot of merely decorative colour photographs added, along with a lot of padding masquerading as 'practical advice'. (I can only imagine that the positive reviewers for some reason failed to receive the official manual, in which case this book would indeed be found helpful to some degree).

Put it this way - if the brevity of the manual has left you desiring further clarification of some technical point, you won't find it here in this book, which adds nothing to the official text and sometimes offers less.

Here's an example - Custom Function II-4, Auto Lighting Optimizer. The book tells you what this function does, chucking in a bit more waffle than the manual to do so. But the manual goes on to clarify a number of issues, such as how this function relates to the capture of RAW images - useful stuff, entirely absent from the book. As it happens, one of the things I was particularly hoping to have spelt out for me was the precise relation between RAW capture and many of the camera's functions. The book though is even more ambiguous than the manual on this point. In fact I suspect the author is himself somewhat confused on the issue. He writes, for instance, that the Portrait Picture Style leaves "a good deal of latitude for RAW conversion tweaks and editing in Photoshop" - which is odd since the picture styles are not applied to RAW files (although you could apply them yourself after the fact I suppose). But I don't mean to get hung up on a particular detail. These examples are to draw attention to the level of guidance on offer in the book, or rather, to the lack of it, and the general lack of care applied to the preparation of the text.

However, if you feel that you might benefit from learning such things as that a "lightweight but sturdy tripod is indispensible" for Landscape, Nature, and Travel Photography, by all means do rush out and get this book. Don't spend all your heard-earned spondoolies though, for you will also be learning that a back-up 5D Mark II is useful, so you'll probably want to get one of those as well.

Avoid buying this book (and the other books by the same author).
These books are just reproductions of the manual that comes with the camera and contains only additional pictures.
The section on using a flash is pointless as this just actually repeats everyting in the manual and doesn't teach you how to use the flash.

I have to say that any reviews suggesting this is little more than a badly sexed up user manual are largely true. This is honestly one of the very VERY few Amazon book purchases I deeply regret making. This book adds very little to my knowledge of this camera, and any "tips" are mostly dull, over generalised rambling narrative. I had hoped to get more practical information on sound and the 5D but this booked failed.

Take my advice. Please dont waste your money on this one. I wish I hadnt believed the Amazon description which sounds exciting but simply wasnt.
