New Intelligent Touch System

Intuitive operation with light-guided touch panel and stunning design

The PIXMA MG8150 features a brand new and unique Intelligent Touch System which makes operation as easy as possible. All controls are integrated into the lid of the printer, providing a larger operational panel and leaving your 8.8cm TFT display free to view images.

The controls are operated by touch rather than press, providing a fast response to your inputs. The clever bit, however, is the intuitive light guided operation. For example, if you select the photo print function, only the controls relating to that function will be illuminated, all other buttons remaining virtually invisible in the glossy black lid. At each subsequent step, only the controls which will assist your photo printing will be illuminated, guiding you through the process to print quickly and easily.

Normal documents and even 3D objects can also be scanned with the highest possible clarity.

Fast, photo-lab quality printing, with the 6 Single Ink System

Thanks to miniscule 1pl ink droplets from Canon’s FINE print engine which delivers a maximum print resolution of 9600 x 2400dpi, the PIXMA MG8150 produces smooth, grain free images. Canon’s High Performance 6 Single Ink System includes two blacks - one for printing crisp laser sharp text, the other for photos to give strong saturated blacks – and a unique grey, for superior monochrome printing.

Document print speeds are a useful 12.5 IPM* in black and white or 9.3 IPM* in colour. A high quality borderless 10x15cm photo-lab quality print is delivered in just 20 seconds. Two-way paper feeding means different types of paper can be loaded at the same time for convenient printing of documents or photos. You can even print directly onto a CD to help archive data or personalise your music collection for example. Plus, you can print your favourite moments without a computer, using the PictBridge connection to print straight from a device or USB flash memory for fast and convenient photos.

Duplex printing helps reduce waste

Efficient 6 Single Ink System and duplex printing for reduced waste

Thanks to six separate ink tanks, you only ever need to replace an ink cartridge when it runs out, reducing waste and optimising ink usage. Coupled with Duplex Printing which allows printing on both sides of paper, you can save money, reduce your paper consumption and help the environment in the process – all without compromising on print quality.

A world of advantages with Canon technology

Automatic correction to make every print perfect

Based on Canon’s market-leading intelligent camera technology, Auto Photo Fix II will automatically analyse and correct your photos at the printer, removing any red-eye and making adjustments to compensate for the photographer, camera or lighting limitations. It will automatically recognise the lighting conditions when the photo was taken and will, for example, brighten faces that are backlit and under-exposed to ensure more accurate skin tones or remove any colour cast to give clear, true colour photos. The result? Perfect prints every time without the need for a computer.

Automatic enhancement for clear and crisp scanned documents

Intelligent auto-correction doesn’t stop with your photos. Through Auto Document Fix technology, your printer enhances text, graphics and images in scanned documents making them clearer, more vivid and more impactful.

Printing made easy with FREE in-box software

Exclusive to Canon, Easy-PhotoPrint EX is the fast and easy way to re-touch your digital photos and print them in a choice of size and layouts either directly within the software or from Adobe® Photoshop® with the supplied Easy-PhotoPrint EX plug-in. The Correct and Enhance button adds advanced photo correction and enhancement using the same simple interface. The lab-quality re-touching features available include: red eye correction, smooth facial lines and skin tone, face brightener, face sharpener and blemish remover.

The intuitive on-screen display helps you choose to print your selection in whichever format you require from normal photos to calendars. The software also features a direct link to Flickr where you can search and download publicly available images to supplement your own. Through Easy-PhotoPrint you can access the Full HD Movie print function, enabling you to capture your favourite home movie moments on photo-lab quality stills.

Save paper with Easy-WebPrint software

FREE Easy-WebPrint EX software offers a range of options to help you organise the information you want to print from the internet and avoid wasting paper. These include:

  • Auto Clipping: print only the area of a web page you want, not all the advertisements you don’t
  • Clip from Multiple pages: collect, combine and edit content from multiple web pages before printing

You can collate this information to create easy to print multiple page booklets, or reduce the size of the whole web page to fit it onto a single piece of paper.

Advanced operations at the click of a button with Solutions Menu EX

Solutions Menu EX provides easy access to the advanced features of your printer. The functions in each category are presented in easy to recognize pictorial icons and you can tailor your Desktop in order to quickly access the functions you want, when you want.

Beautiful, long-lasting photos

You can keep your precious photos bright and vibrant with the Canon ChromaLife100+ system. This unique combination of enhanced FINE print head technology and genuine Canon Chromalife 100+ inks with selected Canon photo papers lets you create beautiful photos that will last up to 300 years when stored in an archival-quality photo album.

To achieve exceptional print resolution, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a patented print head with high precision nozzles, ejecting ink droplets as small as 1 picolitre in size (the smaller the ink drop the better quality the image).

Compact and tidy

Both the Power cable and USB port are recessed inside the compact, stylish printer body so you can push the machine right back against the wall – saving space and keeping everything neat and tidy.

*Printing speeds explained:

Canon measures its printing speeds in IPM (Images Per Minute). IPM is a new ISO speed testing standard, approved by the International Standards Organisation in March 2009.

PPM (Page Per Minute), used by some manufacturers, is not a standard for inkjet printers. Every printer manufacturer has their own ‘test pages’ that are used to test speed and give vastly different results. The new ISO standard sets standardised ‘test pages’ that are to be used by any manufacturer measuring their speed in IPM, allowing comparable results across inkjet brands.

**Only compatible with Canon Digital Still Compact and Digital SLR cameras.

By R. Patel TOP 500 REVIEWER
I have had various printers for use within the home, mainly Canon and Epson printers which have been reasonable. The Canon obviously being a better quality and slightly cheaper to run than the Epson.

This Canon PIXMA MG8150 blows those out of the water. I mean the photo quality is brilliant and I guess this is due to the 6 ink tanks as well. But, the quality is truly outstanding, they do look brilliant.

The setup of the printer and the software is a doddle and setting up the wifi, which is wireless N is very easy. Just follow the instructions and you be using this as a network printer in minutes. There is an ethernet port on this model if required, but there again I have'nt needed to use it as the wireless is enough for my needs.

So, far I have printed various things from coloured charts, documents to photo's and the ink tanks are still showing as quarter usage, which is much better than my old printers. The other bonus is that this printer prints double-sided i.e. duplex printing. This is brilliant as it saves on paper. there is also this Full HD Movie print function, this allows the software to analyze the frames of pictures and then allow you to print flawless photo's. So this goes hand-in-hand with SLR that have full HD movie capture capabilities.

The print software is good. It has all the options I need and more and it's all very easy to use; one the the Canon software has always been good at.

The printer has this groovy touch sensitive interface on the top which is very easy to use. I do like buttons, but the controls are senesitive and do the job well. I guess it makes it easier to clean as I have found. The glossy black colour scheme is very nice and it isn't overly big, so it can sit in the background not looking like a nasty mammoth of a printer.

The printing speed is very good, well it seems faster than my previous Canon. But, best of all is the images, they are truly outstanding(and that is an overstatement). I think the extra grey ink cartridge makes a world of difference to photo prints.
General monochrome print speeds is quick and more than adequate for day-to-day usage. Obviously, colour prints are slower, but still faster than expected. Photo print speeds are more than adequate and I don't sit around waiting for 50 photo's to be printed, but it is still quick. Overall, a thumbs up from me.

The scanner is brilliant as well. It was quick and silent in scanning various doc and images. I also tested the 35mm cartridge and that also performed admirably. You, do need to place the films in the cartrdige which can be a bore. Although, I would have loved it if the 35mm film scanner was a feeder system. Still can't complain it scanned them quickly and the results were as expected.

The Wifi is a boon, as now my children all print wirelessly to this central printer. I'm now actually thinking of buying another one of these just for the home office.

I can't praise this printer anymore, it does what it says and the photo prints are top-notch. Uses less ink, duplex printing and good hardware and software, what more does a person require from a printer.

A big two thumbs up from me!

I try to do my bit for the environment and like to switch things off when I'm not using them - especially when electricity bills can be so high! The downside to doing this was that the machine takes ages to 'boot up' when you power it on - feels like a minute before you can actually do anything. During that minute there are lots of whirring noises with the heads moving about...

After a month or so I noticed to my horror that the ink remaining display for each of the colour cartridges showed 2 out of 5 bars. Now, I don't tend to use my MG8150 much - maybe once a week to scan some documents and in the time that we've owned it we've probably printed 2 6x4 photos and 1 colour A4 email. How can the consumption be so high?! A little googling 'mg8150 switch off wastes ink' showed an interesting forum thread for similarly affected MP980 users. Apparently (and confirmed by Canon) every time you power on the printer it goes through a head cleaning routine and consumes ink...

It's really unacceptable that it uses so much ink simply turning on and off the machine - fortunately leaving it on standby seems to bypass the head cleaning cycle. For the last couple of months, we've left the machine on standby and the ink consumption has not moved. According to my power meter, leaving it on standby consumes 3-4W of electricity - o.k. not much in the grand scheme of things but I'd rather it used none!

This spoils what is otherwise a good machine; good looks, user interface, drivers/software, solid construction, fast printing and quality prints - it has it all. Shame about having to waste electricity leaving it on standby all the time.

I chose this printer to replace an out of date model. My needs were for a wireless printer with a reasonably fast and clean print with photo capabilities. I was also interested in the slide scanning facility. Unfortunately there is no fax but I only use this rarely. It is very simple to set up and the wireless function is excellent and worked first time. The printer is good to look at although quite large. Printing is straightforward and fast enough for my needs. Photo quality is excellent and the slide scanning works very well. My only complaint would be that it seems to use ink faster than my previous printer although the multiple ink cartridges make this difficult to judge. However ink cartridges are reasonably cheap if ordered through the internet (not through Canon's own site which is expensive) and simple to change.
