Canon IXUS II Digital Camera [3MP 2xOptical]

Canon IXUS II Digital Camera [3MP 2xOptical]

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The new IXUS II from Canon is a triumph in packing a huge amount of functions into a small space.

The IXUS II is the first camera from Canon to support Secure Digital storage cards, instead of Compact Flash, which helps it achieve a small overall size. The 2x optical zoom can go to 6.4x if you add in digital zoom and 3.2 megapixels, which is good enough for A4 prints.

Key functions are easy to access and there are a whole range of buttons and selectors on the casing. Providing you're right-handed there is still space for comfortable one-handed use without your thumb obscuring anything vital. The metal casing is both good-looking and robust: after drop-testing an IXUS 400, whose casing is made of the same material, onto hard surfaces a few times it is barely scratched.

Canon is proud of its DiGic processor, which is designed to render images quickly an accurately. During testing, image quality was certainly perfectly acceptable and features such as the ability to manually adjust shutter speed proved useful. If you are a fan of digital movies this camera can shoot those too, although you won't get much on an SD card and Canon's Stitch Assist mode is on hand to help with panoramic shots. Desktop software PhotoStitch completes the process of panorama production and there is other desktop software for manipulating images.

Canon's IXUS range always impresses. Customisable start-up images and sound effects might not be your cup of tea, but some will like this feature and if you are a fan of SD cards and want a very small, light, and capable camera, this could be the ideal choice. --Sandra Vogel

Manufacturer's Description

Ultra chic and ultra sleek, the all-metal bodied Digital IXUS II has an irresistibly silky feel. The world’s smallest 2x retractable zoom lens, 3.2 mega pixels, video clip and sound recording functions have been packed into the slimmest and lightest Digital IXUS body ever.

The Digital IXUS II incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 3.2 effective mega pixels (approximately 3.3 mega pixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2,080 x 1,542 pixels.

The Digital IXUS II features a newly developed, highly compact 2x zoom lens with a focus distance range from 5.4 to 10.8 mm (equivalent to 35 to 70mm for 35 mm film). Smooth Digital Zoom (6.4 x combined with optical zoom).

The compact SD card brings together the capabilities demanded of a next-generation memory card, such as high capacity, high speed writing, advanced copyright protection functions, and support for diverse formats. The Digital IXUS II also supports MMC memory cards.

The Digital IXUS II has several shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the camera.

Modes include Auto, Manual (Program), Stitch Assist and Movie (with sound).

The Digital IXUS II is more than just a still camera; it is also capable of recording voice-tags of up to 60 seconds to accompany each image, and can even capture movie clips of up to three minutes, complete with sound.

The Digital IXUS II uses the 9-point intelligent AiAF (Artificial intelligence Auto Focus) system. This means, that a large area is covered by the focusing system so that subjects can be focused on, without having to move the camera to focus and re-frame the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny but terrific!, 16 Oct 2003
By Mr. Robert J. Taylor "rjwtaylor" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
(...)P>The IXUS II is small, reasonably light and has a metal case to make it resistant to scratches. Despite the high temperatures and constant use it has experienced so far in Japan, it has continued to take some great indoor and outdoor shots.

This camera uses the new SD memory cards, which are smaller than compact flash cards. This makes it easier to carry spares, as well as allowing the camera design to be smaller. As with most digital cameras, you will probably need to buy a larger memory card as the 16MB card provided is too small for constant shooting - though it might last one evening out.

The movie mode, macro mode and customisable options are reasonably intuitive, and the macro mode has been particularly useful for taking close shots of text.

My only two complaints are that the auto-focus seems a bit slow (confusing when you ask other people to take a photo of you), and the zoom is quite weak. However, with a camera this size I did not expect a powerful zoom, and the digital zoom is quite reasonable quality.

In summary, thoroughly recommended but make sure you don't want a more "professional" camera first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny but packed with features, 31 Jul 2003
By A Customer
The new IXUS II is a fantastic little camera, being easy to operate for the novice but with plenty of advanced features available for the more experienced snapper. I was worried at first that it's extreme small size would render it difficult to operate but thankfully the buttons are all of a good size and the viewing screen is an ample 1.5".

The camera's weight is also very low (at least compared with similar models) yet Canon have not skimped on quality and have used the same metal casing as found on their more pricier offerings. The whole unit certainly feels built to last.

Focusing and start up are both quick and efficient, and lighting is usually spot on when used in 'auto' mode. Photo Quality is superb when shooting at the highest resolution mode of 3.2 Megapixels, but the 16MB memory card supplied will need upgrading if you want to take loads of shots at this resolution

All in all a great camera

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compact camera, 22 Jul 2003
By Chris V (Derbyshire, UK) - See all my reviews
The Digital IXUS II is my first venture into digital photography, and it's everything I was hoping.

It's small enough to take with me on any outing, and stylish enough that I'll be pleased whenever it's noticed.

The 3MP images (2048x1536) seem to make beautiful prints at least up to 10"x8" (I'm about to upgrade my printer to check...), and are of far better quality than I would have guessed from the tiny lens.

Beyond that, with digital images I can review pictures I take immediately, and junk any duffs. I can e-mail pictures about what I've been up to (or my two-year-old boy's been up to) the same day as I take them. With such a small camera, I can get images when otherwise I wouldn't have had a camera with me. Then, I can work on the images the same way that I used to manipulate black-and-white images in the darkroom, rather than putting up with lab-processed images which are unequally exposed, poorly framed, suffering from colour-shift, or anything else - which means I can make great prints out of images where I would have said "it's a great picture, shame about...".

Construction quality of the IXUS is comfortingly solid, and the menus and controls seem about as easy as they could be for the functionality they give. I've not tried the video recording yet, but I do like the orientation sensor.

Downsides? Yes, it's only got a 2x zoom (35-70 equiv) - I can live with that, since it's replacing a compact with no zoom at all. More importantly (to me), it has no control over exposure, and hence over depth-of-field - but it's a take-anywhere snapshop camera, not (yet) a replacement for my SLR, so I've no problem about that either. Of course, I'll be getting a spare battery and a bigger memory card.

I've a feeling the IXUS might be keeping me company more often than my SLR from now on...

Overall? I adore it.
