The powerful 4x optical zoom lens incorporates Canon’s renowned optical Image Stabilizer technology to counteract camera shake. An Ultra-High Refractive Index Aspherical (UA) lens element ensures exceptional clarity throughout the zoom range.

DIGIC III with iSAPS

Face Detection AF/AE/FE

I read all the reviews here good and not so good before deciding to go for this camera as my 'keep in my pocket' alternative to my lovely Canon 300D. It was a great price on Amazon.

I have to say I'm in love with this camera!

It oozes quality. It takes great pics, both with and without flash.

Good points:

Great feel and build quality with good pocketable size.

4 x optical zoom

superb flash - great for wide shots right down to macro.

large, sharp lcd viewfinder

optical viewfinder - still useful and sadly omitted from most these days.

superb image stabilizer - great when on the extreme of the 4x zoom.

lovely colour rendition and great detail in images

intuitive operation - really easy to use.

great video quality

good battery life

Bad points:

Connector flap is sometimes troublesome to shut properly.

All in all, I'd recommend this camera to anyone - I can't fault it!

I bought the Ixus 950 IS as its now so difficult to travel abroad with my digital SLR (one hand bag and all). I was especially attracted by the image stabilisation as camera shake was a big problem on my old Sony compact. c.500 shots later I'm really impressed, in the right conditions (good light, outdoors) picture quality really can rival my EOS 350.

A word of warning on battery - for some strange reason there doesn't seem to be a battery life indicator and I have been caught out with a flat battery twice. Battery life is good and it charges quickly, but if you are shooting a lot of pictures in a day get one or more spare batteries. This is a bit annoying as it was bought to be compact you then have to carry around a spare battery pack as well, which doesn't fit in the case.

But overall a good solid compact and at the current price an absolute bargain!

Owned an 850is before this 950 and I am absolutely delighted with it and what a fantastic bargain as it's £40 cheaper now compared to when I bought the 850. There are a number of really good improvements over the earlier camera - The scene setting control is now much more user friendly and the results are amazing - I've submitted two pics under customer images to show this, one using the macro setting, the other on the firework setting and I'm really chuffed with them. The video is excellent for quality and in the time lapse setting is really funny and probably has many useful applications, now all I have to do is think of them!

Overall I love the feel of it, seems really solid and well put together, takes great pictures with no effort.

I would strongly recommend buying the Canon DCC-70 case to protect it, I kept my 850 in a cheap 'pattern' case and the velour interior caused severe abrasion to the LCD screen, the lining on this case is a silk like material and therefore doesn't touch the screen. So definitely worth NOT penny pinching.
