Manufacturer's Description

Refined IXUS style

The Digital IXUS 70 brings contemporary styling to the classic IXUS design concept. Clean lines and sharp edges combine in an ultra slim body to achieve a look of understated, timeless elegance.

7.1 Megapixels

A 7.1 Megapixel CCD sensor captures every scene with razor sharp detail, for photo quality prints up to poster size.

Ultra compact 3x optical zoom

An Ultra-High Refractive Index Aspherical (UA) 3x optical zoom lens delivers crystal-clear performance in an exceptionally compact form.

DIGIC III with iSAPS

Canon's DIGIC III processor provides lightning quick responses, superb image quality and advanced noise reduction for sharper, clearer images. iSAPS technology analyses each scene to optimise key camera settings even before a shot is taken.

Face Detection AF/AE/FE

Face Detection AF/AE/FE ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting the subjects in the frame and selecting the optimum focus, exposure and flash settings for the scene. My Category tags each image based on face detection and shooting mode for easy navigation, printing, deleting and more.

Red-Eye Correction

During playback Face Detection Technology allows you to quickly and accurately correct red-eye.

2.5" LCD

A high resolution (230,000 pixels) PureColor LCD displays richer, vivid colours with sharp definition. An anti-glare, scratch-resistant coating adds extra protection against knocks and scrapes.

Sharp low-light shooting

Shoot clear, bright images in dim conditions with ISO 1600 - ideal for parties and restaurants or where flash photography is not allowed. Use ISO Auto Shift to avoid image blur with the touch of a button whenever camera shake is predicted.

Shooting modes and My Colours

Choose from 17 shooting modes including a range of Special Scene modes, optimised for specific shooting situations. Apply in-camera colour effects to images and movies with My Colours.

Movies

Shoot long¹ VGA movies with sound. Use the Time Lapse Movie function to capture changing scenes - a flower’s bloom, drifting clouds or a bustling city street - for accelerated playback as smooth video clips.

Shortcut button

The customisable Shortcut button provides one-touch access to your favourite shooting options. Assignable functions include exposure compensation, white balance and instant Movie shooting.

As many other reviewers, I researched the web for hours when choosing a digi-camera and I am more than satisfied with The Canon Ixus 70.

    Tips for buyers

    1. Buy a 2gb SD card - Sandisk seem to be good quality and well priced. This takes the Photo capacity upto 1000 in certain modes plus 15minutes of video. Beware very cheap SD cards - my images were too precious to risk being lost to corrupt cards!

    2. The Ixus 70 is the highest Megapixel Canon model ( 7 mp ) with a viewfinder. This is really useful to preserve battery life if you are just snapping. Other models in the Ixus range only use the screen as the viewfinder, which can drain battery life.

    3. Buy a case. Th camera doesn't come with a case. I would recommend trying to find one which can also hold extra SD cards/battery.

Very impressed with this product, works stright out of the box and for once (!) the bundled software (zoombrowser ex) is a very inutitive photo storage software package.

    HIghly recommended.

My goodness Canon know how to make cameras. The first thing you notice when you take the camera out of the box is the build quality. It is absolutely superb. It feels very solid, buttons and switches are clearly built to last and it sits so well in your hand.

I bought this camera for my wife and the requirements were:
Small enough to slip into a handbag/pocket, built-in viewfinder, good quality pictures, good indoor (flash) pictures, simple to use, nice to look at!

The Ixus 70 ticks all of these boxes and more. As one reviewer stated, this is the highest megapixel camera with a viewfinder and if you enjoy using the viewfinder to take pics, this is the only camera you should consider in this price range.

The picture quality is just stunning. We took a few shots of the recent storms and the level of detail the camera picks up is great. I don't particularly like using a flash and have taken most of our pictures without the flash enabled. The camera performs very well on this setting and can handle some quite poor lighting conditions admirably.

It doesn't do the camera justice to call it a "point and shoot" handbag camera but if this is what you are after, then save yourself the extra £££ for the udpated models and buy this one with a 2 GB memory card to go with it.

The menu system is very straightforward and the camera is incredibly quick. This includes start-up time when you switch on, and time taken to take pictures.

Connecting to the computer - we connect to our MacBook via USB and the Mac detects the camera automatically and downloads the pictures into iPhoto. Works like a dream!

You will not be disappointed with this camera for less than £150.

Only recommendations I would make are to buy a soft case and a 1 or 2 GB memory card. Make sure you spend a little more on your memory card than just going for the cheapest. Your pictures are worth the investment. Budget memory cards are more likely to become corrupt and result in the loss of your pics. I went for the SanDisk SD 1 GB EXTREME III.

    Love it! 2 Oct 2007
    By Shorty
I wanted to upgrade from the original IXUS i but wanted to stay with Canon because i was so impressed with the quality of photos. I wanted a camera which was just as small as the original but had an optical zoom. This camera fits the bill perfectly, i love it! It's so small it can fit into a pocket or handbag and takes brilliant quality photos for such a tiny camera. Not only is it simple enough for a child to use, it's got a great range of advanced features for those who want something a little extra. I've been having fun with the colour swap feature. Ok, so it's not a digital SLR, but for a 'point and shoot' camera you can't ask for more!
