Highly-pocket able, chic design

The IXUS 510 HS combines the classic IXUS design with sleek, sharp edged good looks and a tiny body measuring just 19.8 mm front to back. With its futuristic lens cover and slim design, this camera’s size belies its power and image quality. It is the perfect take-anywhere camera for style-conscious users who want the ability to share images instantly through the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Exceptional zoom technology

The IXUS 510 HS benefits from Canon’s class-leading lens technology, offering an impressive 28 mm wide-angle 12x optical zoom lens. The wide angle allows you to fit more in the shot, whilst the powerful optical zoom enables you to get up close and personal, even with distant subjects.

In addition to the optical zoom, the IXUS 510 HS also features Canon’s advanced digital zoom technology, ZoomPlus. This extends the camera’s overall zoom range to 21x with minimal impact on sharpness and detail, compared to using a conventional digital zoom. So now you can get even closer to the action.

Wireless connectivity

The IXUS 510 HS has inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity which gives you the freedom to share your images and movies faster and more easily than ever before, including effortless upload to social networks.

Apple smartphones and tablets*

The IXUS 510 HS is ideal for using in conjunction with Apple’s portable devices, such as an iPhone 4 or iPad (iOS 4.3 or above). By downloading the free ‘Canon CameraWindow’ app from Apple iTunes you can wirelessly transfer any of your images directly from your camera whilst on the go, anytime, anywhere.

The ‘Canon CameraWindow’ app allows you to either push images from the camera to your phone, or use your phone to browse the images stored on your camera and then select which ones to wirelessly transfer to your iPhone or iPad. You can save your images directly into the ‘Photos’ gallery on the phone, upload them directly to Facebook and YouTube or simply share them via email.

Support for Android phones has been scheduled for release in Spring 2012. Functionality may vary with the existing compatible devices.

Camera to internet services

The IXUS 510 HS also allows you to share your images with social networking sites using only the camera and a Wi-Fi network** to which you have access. All you need to do is register your camera with a CANON iMAGE GATEWAY (CiG) account which allows you to use your camera’s menu to share images online. Once set up, your images will be saved to your free 10 gigabytes of personal online storage and shared via Album web links with Facebook, Twitter or via Email.

Connect to other compatible cameras

The IXUS 510 HS can also connect to other compatible Canon cameras that feature inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity. This means that if your friends or family have a compatible camera you can wirelessly transfer images between your cameras, enabling you to instantly share your photos.

Home computers

Additionally, the inbuilt Wi-Fi connection allows you to wirelessly connect to your home computer (Windows 7 SP1 or Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later) and transfer your images, without the need for a physical connection via a USB port.

Capture the scene exactly as you see it with Canon’s HS System

The power of Canon’s HS System comes from the combination of the 10.1 megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s advanced DIGIC 5 processor. The HS System gives incredibly high image quality in all light conditions and enables the camera to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing over-exposure of highlighted areas and loss of detail in the shadows. This means that you can preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.

Outstanding results in low light

Canon’s HS System truly excels in low light conditions. It can often be challenging to capture well exposed subjects inside against dark backgrounds, or outside in low light; the flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. Canon’s HS System reduces the camera’s reliance on flash in low-light situations - background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced and camera shake is controlled, maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur. As a result you can capture great low-light images without needing to use the flash as often.

Intelligent IS
Without Intelligent IS close-up shots can be blurred

Less noise, clearer detail

The HS System allows for significant noise reduction at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash. Shots are striking and detailed, with the 10.1 megapixel sensor capturing more than enough detail to reproduce images onto large poster-sized formats.

Incredibly sharp images whatever the situation

The IXUS 510 HS also benefits from Canon’s Intelligent IS technology. Whether you’re shooting stills or movies, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the shooting situation and then selects the most appropriate type of optical image stabilization from 7 modes. For example, when capturing a close-up of a flower the camera will automatically select Macro IS with Hybrid IS technology, but then it will automatically switch to Powered IS when filming distant subjects with the zoom. This allows you to focus on framing the image you want, safe in the knowledge that the camera is working to eliminate as much camera shake as possible, even if you need to move with your scene.

Fast-paced, Full High Definition movies

For moments that are best caught on video, the IXUS 510 HS offers advanced video performance with the capability to record Full HD movies at 1080p with stereo sound and HDMI-CEC compatibility ensuring optimum playback on High Definition televisions. The 12x optical zoom is also available during filming, allowing you to get really close to the action, plus Smart Auto can detect 21 different types of scene, ensuring it looks just as you see it.

Large, touchscreen display

The IXUS 510 HS features a large 8.0 cm (3.2") PureColor II Touch LCD touchscreen. This high quality 460k dot screen makes framing and reviewing images easy, even from difficult angles or in bright light. Meanwhile, Canon’s touchscreen technology allows you to control different settings with just a swipe of a finger, making the camera incredibly simple to operate. Touch AF allows you to focus on the subject simply by touching it on the LCD screen. You can also choose to instantly capture the image using the Touch Shutter – simply place your finger on the LCD screen and remove it when you want the image to be captured.

Effortless shooting, superb results

When you're taking photographs, the only thing you want to think about is your subject, so Canon’s Smart Auto mode removes the worry of deciding which settings to select. It enables the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject.

In Smart Auto mode, Canon’s Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 58 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. It allows the camera to identify moving subjects to ensure the focus and exposure are always correct. For sharp close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode and Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Additionally, Multi-area White Balance correction enables incredibly accurate colour reproduction. For example, usually when shooting indoors where the subject is lit by flash and the background is illuminated by artificial lighting, the multiple light sources can distort the colours in the image. But Canon’s Multi-area White Balance correction eliminates this problem so that the natural skin tones of the subject are retained, whilst the colours in the background also remain true-to-life.

Prioritise your family and friends

Face ID allows you to register up to 12 faces with names and birthdays so that the camera can automatically prioritise these individuals in every shot. Once the faces have been registered, Smart Auto uses the information to prioritise focus on these faces, regardless of how many other subjects are in the frame. This ensures that the camera always captures the best possible images of the people who are most important to you. It also makes it easy to search for photographs of specific friends or family members when you play back your images.

00px">Face ID

Additionally, Face ID uses the birthdays that you register to work in conjunction with Smart Auto to enable you to take better photographs in a range of different situations. For example, if Smart Auto detects a baby (0 – 2 years old) in the frame that is smiling it will automatically take multiple images and then select the best image for you.

High-speed shooting

The high-sensitivity CMOS sensor also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst HQ

In High-speed Burst HQ mode the IXUS 510 HS can effectively capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or everyday life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode slows down fast-moving subjects by capturing QVGA resolution video at a staggering 240 frames per second (VGA resolution at 120fps) - which can then be played back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. This is perfect for analysing a golf swing, recording a bird in flight or just for a bit of fun. The software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing you to view your footage both at real or slow motion speed.

Handheld Night Scene

Handheld Night Scene mode allows you to capture clear, detailed night scenes. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and then combines the image data into a single image, ensuring the best possible exposure with the least amount of blur – perfect for handheld shots taken at night.

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, Movie Digest allows you to create an HD quality (720p) quality film telling the story behind the images you’ve captured that day. Every time a still image is captured, the preceding 4 seconds is automatically recorded as a movie clip - these are then automatically collated into one complete video showing the highlights of the day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for carrying it together to any place 28 Oct 2012
Colour Name:White|Verified Purchase
I bought this camera before Summer at around 270. Now its price has dropped quite a lot, so I guess it is a chance. I used it in many occasions especially under heavy sun light and during almost complete darkness (in clubs).

My other camera is a 3-year old SONY DSLR a200.

Pros:
1. You can carry it in your pocket, something you cant do with your DSLR or even some other heavier small cameras. Apart from that, my DSLR does not shoot video and this was an additional reason I bought Ixus. Note that I think it is very important to be able to carry your camera anywhere, even if you will have to lose something in picture quality (which I discuss below)

2. Applications: There are around 20 different modes you can use your camera with. In fact you don't even need so many different options! Interface is great and I am very satisfied with the camera's applications which my oldie DSLR lacks.

3. Video is 1080 HD. Quality is excellent and seriously you do not have to carry with you a camcorder (unless of course you are seeking something professional).

4. Its appearance is stylish! Take the classy white!

Cons:
1. I am not sure whether I should classify this as a con, since I am asking too much from such a small camera. Picture quality is excellent when compared to other small cameras I have seen (obviously I haven't seen every other small camera, so please do not count so much on my opinion on its comparison with other small cameras; for example I have never seen NEX or coolpix). But I can compare it with my a200 DSLR: In that case, you will understand the difference when you zoom in the pictures you have taken. This camera is not a DSLR. Its pictures are great but if you want to take excellent ones with shiny colours and the ability to crop them without losing in quality and obtaining peculiar 'white pixels', then take your DSLR with you. For all other cases, this is a great camera.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent camera 17 Feb 2013
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
This is a good camera. I bought because of its good performance in low light. The downsides of the camera are that the Wifi is difficult to set up and use. The battery life is not very good (as other reviewers have said). And its slightly difficult to use with the touch screen display (using your nail is better, its not like using a smart phone). But the pictures it takes are good and it easily deals with different light conditions (e.g. no problem with back lighting)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic little camera 8 Aug 2012
By Caro B
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
The emphasis being on little, as this is small, but very comfortable to hold and take pictures with. I bought it because of its wifi capability. I have seen other reviews of this camera which say the wifi is fiddly to set up, absolutely not the case, it's a doodle and I'm no techy! I set it on automatic so it is simple to point and shoot.

The quality of the shots are unbelievable which was proven when I used it on a recent cruise. I captured some stunning pictures at sea and in fact upon my return, I had one of the photos enlarged onto a canvas measuring 900cmx700cm and the quality was awesome.

Another thing that I read when researching this little beauty was the poor battery life, not in my experience, I used it on and off all day to take photos and video clips and play back so I didn't find it a problem.

The wifi is amazing and if you are a smart phone, tablet user and I have to say I'm an Apple user this camera is a must have to add to your collection. You can select a photo in playback mode and swipe it across to your phone or computer and if you are linked to the cloud it automatically downloads to your iPad without cables!

Can't say enough to recommend this little beauty, I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb small camera 1 July 2012
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
The Ixus 510 HS is very small, but produces excellent photos. I have a larger camera, but this is Ixus is small enough to have in the trouser pocket.
Its photos are very clear and sharp. The touch screen works well, and is very intuitive. The wi-fi downloading is quite fun, but I think I prefer downloading through the cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon Ixus 510 HS A little gem 2 Oct 2012
By George
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
Canon IXUS 510 HS Digital Camera - Black (10.1 MP, 12x Optical Zoom) 3.2 Inch LCD This camera is a little gem, and smaller than a pack of playing cards, little it certainly is. Ease of use is simple with most functions confined to a well-lit and very responsive touch screen. The 12x zoom lens for such a small camera is extremely powerful, equivalent in 35mm terms, approx 28mm - 340mm, with crisp vibrant results. At 10 mega pixels, some may think this is a small and outdated digital compact, but the sheer quality and build make up for that. Another great feature with this gem is that its wi fi enabled, making uploading pictures in a variety of ways very simple. The camera casing is made from solid metal, which gives it a robust and reassuring feel, and certainly adds to the style. Canon has done a brilliant job here. With its original price tag of around 340, I thought this was a bit over the top. But now selling for around 200, worth every penny. This camera will go down as an iconic classic.

I have quite a few cameras of varying styles/makes.

I last owned an ixus about 4 years ago, an ixus 700 which was excellent for the size and I used it as a social camera for a long time with no problems.

The 510hs is a nice little camera, appears well made, but has some drastic flaws.

I had the camera maybe ten days before returning it.

I bought it to carry everywhere in my pocket, which I did.

After a week I noticed specks on the photos which turned out to be dust/debris on the inside of the lens.

I have no idea if the dust seals were faulty on the lens and the piston motion of the zoom sucked dust in or if the design is inherently poor.

However it was simply not good enough. So it went back for this reason alone. The bits below I could have"lived with".

The battery life is particularly poor and it seemed to discharge quite quickly when not in use too.

The wifi transfer REALLY used the battery quickly. Like in 20 minutes after having taken about 20 pictures and 10 mins of video.

The wifi connectivity also requires the use of an access point/router that the device you wish to connect to and the camera can connect to. It certainly did not seem to want to connect directly to my laptop or phone without an intermediary.

Video files are limited to "about" 10 minutes (I assume 2gb) at HD quality. The camera stops recording at that point and you have to re-press the record button. Very poor really. I thought it was faulty until I visited the Canon support site, it doesn't seem to mention it in the manual, or on any online reviews I read.
