Capture the scene exactly as you see it with Canon’s HS System

The power of Canon’s HS System comes from the combination of the 10.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s advanced DIGIC 5 processor. The HS System gives incredibly high image quality in all light conditions and enables the camera to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing over-exposure of highlighted areas and loss of detail in the shadows. This means that you can preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.

Outstanding results in low light

Canon’s HS System truly excels in low light conditions. It can often be challenging to capture well exposed subjects inside against dark backgrounds, or outside in low light; the flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. Canon’s HS System reduces the camera’s reliance on flash in low-light situations - background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced and camera shake is controlled, maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur. As a result, you can capture great low-light images without needing to use the flash as often.

Less noise, clearer detail

The HS System significantly reduces noise at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash. Shots are striking and detailed, with the 10.1 Megapixel sensor capturing more than enough information to reproduce images onto large poster-sized formats.

Blur-free images whatever the situation

The IXUS 500 HS benefits from Canon’s Intelligent IS technology. Whether you’re shooting stills or movies, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the shooting situation and then selects the most appropriate type of optical image stabilization from 7 modes. For example, when capturing a close-up of a flower the camera will automatically select Macro IS with Hybrid IS technology, but then it will automatically switch to Powered IS when filming distant subjects with the zoom. This allows you to focus on framing the image you want, safe in the knowledge that the camera is working to eliminate as much camera shake as possible, even if you need to move with your scene.

Fast-paced, Full High Definition movies

For moments that are best caught on video, the IXUS 500 HS offers advanced video performance with the capability to record Full HD movies at 1080p with HDMI-CEC compatibility ensuring optimum playback on High Definition televisions. The 12x optical zoom is also available during filming, allowing you to get really close to the action, plus Smart Auto can detect 21 different types of scene, ensuring it looks just as you see it.

Large, high quality display

The IXUS 500 HS features a large 7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD. This high quality 460k dot screen makes framing and reviewing images easy, even from difficult angles or in bright light. Meanwhile, the outer layer of toughened scratch resistant glass ensures that the display has extra durability.

Effortless shooting, superb results

When you're taking photographs, the only thing you want to think about is your subject, so Canon’s Smart Auto mode removes the worry of deciding which settings to select. It enables the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject.

In Smart Auto mode, Canon’s Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 58 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. It allows the camera to identify moving subjects to ensure the focus and exposure are always correct. For sharp close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode and Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Additionally, Multi-area White Balance correction enables incredibly accurate colour reproduction. For example, usually when shooting indoors where the subject is lit by flash and the background is illuminated by artificial lighting, the multiple light sources can distort the colours in the image. But Canon’s Multi-area White Balance correction eliminates this problem so that the natural skin tones of the subject are retained, whilst the colours in the background also remain true-to-life.

Prioritise your family and friends

Face ID allows you to register up to 12 faces with names and birthdays so that the camera can automatically prioritise these individuals in every shot. Once the faces have been registered, Smart Auto uses the information to prioritise focus on these faces, regardless of how many other subjects are in the frame. This ensures that the camera always captures the best possible images of the people who are most important to you. It also makes it easy to search for photographs of specific friends or family members when you play back your images.

Additionally, Face ID uses the birthdays that you register to work in conjunction with Smart Auto to enable you to take better photographs in a range of different situations. For example, if Smart Auto detects a baby (0 – 2 years old) in the frame that is smiling it will automatically take multiple images and then select the best image for you.

High-speed shooting

The high-sensitivity CMOS sensor also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst

In High-speed Burst mode the IXUS 500 HS can effectively capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or everyday life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode slows down fast-moving subjects by capturing QVGA resolution video at a staggering 240 frames per second (VGA resolution at 120fps) - which can then be played back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. This is perfect for analysing a golf swing, recording a bird in flight or just for a bit of fun. The software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing you to view your footage both at real or slow motion speed.

Handheld Night Scene

Handheld Night Scene mode allows you to capture clear, detailed night scenes. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and then combines the image data into a single image, ensuring the best possible exposure with the least amount of blur – perfect for handheld shots taken at night.

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, Movie Digest allows you to create an HD quality (720p) quality film telling the story behind the images you’ve captured that day. Every time a still image is captured, the preceding 4 seconds is automatically recorded as a movie clip - these are then automatically collated into one complete video showing the highlights of the day.

Accessories

The IXUS 500 HS is compatible with a range of optional accessories including a soft leather case (DCC-65) for everyday use and a waterproof case (WP-DC340L) which provides water-resistance down to 3 metres making it the perfect photography accessory for taking photos whilst snorkelling or just for the additional protection it offers against the elements.

So far so good. Not complicated to learn to use, terrific telephoto and fits neatly into pocket or handbag. The Microcard was extra and with it I bought a USB download gadget which has been very useful as none of our computers accept a microcard in their slots.

This is the third digital IXUS camera I've owned in the last five years or so, and the most impressive thing about it is that they have managed to fit a 12x zoom into a box this small. (My original IXUS 70 had a 3x zoom, and the 500 is pretty much exactly the same size.) Even more surprisingly, the zoom doesn't protrude that far when the camera is switched on, even at full extension.

There is, of course, a trade-off - the miniaturisation of the optics has meant that the image sensor has to be correspondingly small. Canon have got round this by fitting a 1/2.3 inch sensor, as is common in small cameras, but they are only using part of it, hence the reduction in megapixels compared to cameras of similar size with smaller zoom ranges. So this is not a 1/2.3 10 megapixel sensor with a relatively low pixel density; it's a 1/2.3 16 megapixel sensor, but 6 megapixels aren't used. The major implication of this is low-light performance - even though the HS badge is supposed to imply impressive low-light shooting, I'm afraid on this camera it is no better than adequate. It struggles to find focus in low light conditions, and low light images are very noisy, even at lower ISO settings.

However, if you use the camera in well-lit conditions, it produces excellent results, particularly for something this size. The image stabilisation works well, and the combination of the optical zoom and the additional digital zoom produces quite acceptable quality images at what is effectively 600mm on a 35mm camera. The boxy shape is somewhat awkward to hold when shooting, but no more so than any other camera this size would be, and the zoom and shutter controls are easy to use.

After researching the products of almost every other compact camera manufacturer this seemed to me to be the smallest camera body available and one which would fit discretely onto a belt loop for evenings out. As prices of this model have have fallen dramatically recently, and as Canon are offering 'cashback' too, I bought a glossy blue version which was cheaper still than red, black and silver. Blue isn't my first choice, but now the camera is set up, it has grown on me. I am familiar with Canon controls and menu layouts, and despite the control wheel on my rather chunky, silver Canon Ixus 960 being far easier to use, it didn't take too long to set the 500HS up. I am sure its auto feature will be used most of the time. Before purchase I noted it takes a micro SD card, not a standard SD, so bought the fastest 8gb card available. If your requirement is for a stylish and quality product producing good results, in a tiny body, then I can recommend this camera. At the time of purchase suitable Canon leather belt cases were not available, but I found this camera fits snugly into a leather case once used with a similarly tiny Casio card camera. Once the Canon 510 reaches this low price point I will be sure to upgrade again.

This is my second digital IXUS, my last much loved one hitting the wall (literally) 6 years ago and the hand of my then toddler daughter. Got this on run up to Easter 2013 when existing Lumix DMC-TZ7 appeared to die following being dropped. The fact that it resurrected it's self is helpful as I can compare the 2

The is certainly very good looking with it's brushed matt body. It is really small so make sure you are aware. Uses micro SDHC (I got one for free when I bought the camera from the supplier but they didn't tell me so bought a second one !).

For shooting modes in use you can switch between the standard auto mode (automatically adjust to scenes with all the bells and whistles) and your selected special mode (you need to select which one in use). The usual suspects are here B&W, low light (drops to 2.5MP very useful if taking indoor shots without flash- perfect for school Christmas shows where you're wedged at the back and your flash would be pointless) etc. There is a great multishot mode which allows you take a rapid series of shots in bursts for moving targets (again lowers MP count). A program mode allows you to distinctly fiddle

Like all compacts suffers from the time to get a focus lock and then a picture (I get lots of the backs of kids heads). This isn't particularly worse than most compact but is slightly slower than my Lumix.
Images tend to be well focused. Colours are natural but perhaps slightly cool and muted (again I prefer the Lumix shots)
Red Eye is quite an issue with flash shots.
