Improved shots in tricky lighting conditions with HS System

Canon HS System
With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled

The IXUS 220 HS features the powerful Canon HS System, which allows for excellent high image quality, especially in low light conditions, plus high speed stills and movie shooting. Capturing well exposed subjects inside, against dark backgrounds or outside in low light can be difficult. The flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of hand-held shooting. With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled – maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature also offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the contrast in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without over exposing correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Get closer to the action with a 5x optical zoom

You can get up close and personal, even with faraway subjects with the IXUS 220 HS’s 5x optical zoom. Its versatility means you can really explore your creative options and it’s perfect for capturing the action whether you’re at a sporting event or at a concert. Meanwhile a 2.7" PureColor II G LCD has toughened scratch resistant glass making HD recording, shooting and playback a breeze.

Canon's Dynamic Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for almost every kind of movement from the gentle murmurs of your breathing to the vibrations of a car ride, so your movies will always have a smooth, professional look. Easily switch from Standard Mode to Dynamic Range when you want to stabilise heavy hand shake on the move e.g. when walking, shooting from a moving car or even when shooting at maximum zoom.

Effortless shooting - superb results

When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject so, the effortless IXUS 220 HS offers two simple shooting modes - Smart Auto and Easy Mode.

Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 32 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image. Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. Moving subjects are also detected to ensure focus and exposure is always correct. For close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

In Easy mode the camera automatically selects all the camera settings, deactivating all buttons except those used for shooting – ideal for beginners or children.

High-speed shooting

The HS System also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst

In High-speed burst mode the camera can take up to 3.7 shots per second at full 12.1 Megapixels resolution or 8.8 shots per second at 2.5 Megapixels resolution. The camera allows you to capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode captures movies at a staggering 240 frames per second (fps) and plays them back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. It’s now possible to shoot VGA quality at 120fps in addition to QVGA at 240fps. The free software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing for your footage to be viewed both at real or slow motion speed, so you won’t miss a moment.

Handheld Night Scene

Capture blur-free night scenes with the Handheld Night Scene mode. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and combines them into one blur-free image.

Miniature effect

Choice of shooting modes

With the IXUS 220 HS, you also have the option of selecting from a full range of shooting modes that you can count on for exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough.

New scene modes allow you to easily expand your photographic results. These include Miniature effect, which reproduces the effect of a very narrow depth of field transforming normal landscapes into miniature lookalikes, Fisheye which reproduces the effect of a Fisheye lens in three different levels of intensity and Monochrome which uses different Colour Filters (e.g. sepia). There are also new photo effect modes: Super Vivid which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result, Poster which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect, Toy Camera that changes the tone of the shot (e.g. cool or warm), Low Light for when you want to capture atmospheric shots without a flash and Multi-Aspect shooting to choose whether your photograph is taken in a specific aspect ratio (4:5, 16:9. 1:1 etc.)

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, every time the shutter is pushed the action 4 seconds before is recorded as a movie and collated into one complete highlights video every day. Each photograph you will have taken will have a special 4 second memory-jogging movie clip to accompany it.

Power efficient with quick recharge

The IXUS 220 HS runs off an intelligent rechargeable Li-Ion battery that will give you hours of shooting pleasure and is quick and easy to recharge.

Shoot with confidence

Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence straight from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour delivering a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Fast, intelligent processing and superb image quality

Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology locates faces in a shot and automatically adjusts for natural skin tones
Face Detection

With Face Detection, up to 35 faces can be detected in each shot and focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance are all automatically adjusted for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones.

Face Select & Track

Face Select & Track allows a single face in a crowd to be selected and tracked as the main subject.

Smile and Wink Detection Self-Timer

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the shutter pressed and the self-timer starts, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame.

It then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and once the main subject smiles or winks it adjusts focus and exposure before taking the picture.

Motion Detection Technology Motion

Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

Automatic Red-Eye Correction

WP-DC320L and WP-DC41 waterproof cases

Automatic Red-Eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by the flash.

Rich razor-sharp images - every time

The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 70 years of experience for outstanding results.

Underwater accessories

The IXUS 220 HS is compatible with two optional waterproof cases. The Canon WP-DC320L is a slim waterproof case that provides water-resistance up to 3 metres making it the perfect photography accessory for taking photos whilst snorkelling or just for the additional protection it offers against the elements. Alternatively, for deeper underwater photography, the Canon WP-DC41 offers protection up to 40 metres whilst still allowing you to shoot fantastic photos and movies making it ideal for scuba diving.

Just to add some perspective to my review; I've been a DSLR user for years, having used many low/medium level SLR's such as Canon 10d/20d/30d/500d/550d's, Nikon D70/D90/D300's, as well as a number of Canon/Nikon/Sony point & shoot cameras, and most recently I bought a Sony NEX-3 - which this camera replaced.

I wanted something smaller than the NEX, with an equally wide lens, good video mode and a decent screen; this camera delivers.

There's no getting around it though; this is a small sensor compact camera, and high ISO performance over ISO 400/800 - depending on use - is questionable. Dynamic range - though extremely impressive compared to pretty much all rival models except those from Fuji - is never going to be in the same league as the above APSC cameras, however that is where the negatives end...

The lens on this beautiful and reassuringly solid little camera is truly amazing; sharp, very little distortion - even at it's widest 24mm (!!!) position - and extremely resistant to flare. Very useful range, though I rarely go past around 50mm equiv.

The JPEG colour rendition is outstanding, if sometimes on the cool side, and JPEG sharpening is good; it's not too strong at all, which I like as it means I have control over the end result through PP. However, it may leave those who want out of the camera perfection wanting more.

The video mode is extremely good; 1080 and 720p both look beautiful, but the most used mode for me - filming a lot of Parkour/Free-running movements - is most definitely the VGA 120 mode. Though the resolution may be significantly lower than what the camera is capable of, the frame rate really does put it up there with some seriously expensive videocameras, making super-slo-mo available for the consumer Market.

My last 4 cameras have been canon ixus, I love their pocket size.

This new one continues the tradition. The fact something this small can record full hd video with stereo sound is truly amazing.

Image quality is fantastic, I always think canon gives you great colour reproduction.

The camera is very automatic, so it's really easy to use. If you want to go off piste there is tons of manual options to choose from. My wife is a runner and I find the burst mode fantastic for recording a quick sequence of images.

I can recommend this camera to any buyer who just wants a camera that is easy to use and takes great photos.

******************** Original Review:

My perspective: just upgraded from IXUS 60 to IXUS 220. I chose an IXUS again because I absolutely loved the build quality, functionality and small dimensions of the IXUS 60. I repeat, I absolutely loved the sturdiness of the IXUS 60, which has survived 4 years of intensive use without any failure.

The 220 is once again an excellent design, with no serious flaws and only some minor areas where there's room for improvement. I would like to give it 4.5, but as this is not possible, I give it a 5.

The positive: everything important for a compact camera is done brilliantly by the 220.

1. excellent picture quality
2. very light sensitive sensor, great for night work
3. great build quality
4. sleek design to fit the pocket
5. great value for money
6. functional menu
7. many great modes, some of which are really useful
8. hand held night mode a nice toy (albeit, of course, not as good as tripod shooting)
9. fantastic HD video mode with automatic focus, exposure and manual zoom during shooting.

The neutral: apart from the felt decrease in battery life, only very minor points

1. compared to the IXUS 60, I feel the battery life is somewhat reduced. Only just still acceptable.
2. I'd have wished for a dedicated self timer button (I still have to go through the menu, just like with the IXUS 60)
3. the delivered wrist wrap does not have a tightening piece anymore, as was the case for the one for the IXUS 60

The negative: nothing significant, but in comparison with the IXUS 60, the 220 seems *slightly* less sturdily build!!! Arrrgh, I hate regress, even if its minor!!!!!

I am a semi pro photographer. I take my kit which also includes a HD Video camera with me on holidays and assignments. But there are times when the camera and lenses just too bulky and a huge hassel to carry around. I needed something small but able to capture good quality images. I have always ignored the compacts - with some arrogance.
But I was converted when I bought the Canon 220. The camera was a delight to use - the zoom to wide is excellent but what blew me away was the full HD video recording in wide angle.

Apart from the commercial assignments I only use the 220. I recommend this camera to anyone who uses SLR cameras.
Do not opt for the cheaper options - which are tempting but in the end you pay for the quality - although the price I paid through Amazon is an incredible bargain.

I've long been a fan of the Ixus series - I started with an SD400 and continued all the way up to the excellent 950IS. And then came the first in the HS range: the 300HS. Unfortunately, this was a complete let-down, with erratic focusing, less than stellar battery life and much poorer video recording capabilities: the 300HS was prone to constant refocusing in video mode and the stereo mike on the 300HS overloaded at much lower sound levels than the far more robust mono mike in the 950 IS. And at that point, I resigned myself to switching away from the Ixus range for future cameras.

But then... the next generation of HS cameras arrived, including the 220 HS. And so I decided to take a second chance on the series. And I've been pleasantly surprised, so far. Picture quality is alright - it's not as sharp as the ancient Powershot SX10 I have, but it's more than acceptable, given the camera size and "social" uses that a pocketable camera is intended for. And as befits a "high sensitivity" sensor, the 220 HS is capable of capturing shots in lower-light conditions without the need for the flash.

Video recording is good as well: the stereo mike still isn't as hardy as the mono mike in the 950IS, but it's far better than the 300 HS. The video quality is good and (at least in "Manual" mode) isn't prone to the focusing issues that the 300 HS had. That said, there are two caveats: 1080p video recording is limited to ten minutes and some form of noise reduction is applied when using optical zoom, which can "dull" the sound at gigs.

Battery life is alright - 1080p video recording is a major drain on the battery, but even so, I've been able to get over 40 minutes of video (plus photos) on a single charge.

On the less positive side: the camera isn't quite as robust as the 950 IS - but then, it is still a metal case and far smaller and lighter - and most people won't keep it in a pocket with keys and coins!
