Improved shots in tricky lighting conditions with HS System

Canon HS System
With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled

The IXUS 220 HS features the powerful Canon HS System, which allows for excellent high image quality, especially in low light conditions, plus high speed stills and movie shooting. Capturing well exposed subjects inside, against dark backgrounds or outside in low light can be difficult. The flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of hand-held shooting. With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled – maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature also offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the contrast in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without over exposing correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Get closer to the action with a 5x optical zoom

You can get up close and personal, even with faraway subjects with the IXUS 220 HS’s 5x optical zoom. Its versatility means you can really explore your creative options and it’s perfect for capturing the action whether you’re at a sporting event or at a concert. Meanwhile a 2.7" PureColor II G LCD has toughened scratch resistant glass making HD recording, shooting and playback a breeze.

Canon's Dynamic Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for almost every kind of movement from the gentle murmurs of your breathing to the vibrations of a car ride, so your movies will always have a smooth, professional look. Easily switch from Standard Mode to Dynamic Range when you want to stabilise heavy hand shake on the move e.g. when walking, shooting from a moving car or even when shooting at maximum zoom.

Effortless shooting - superb results

When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject so, the effortless IXUS 220 HS offers two simple shooting modes - Smart Auto and Easy Mode.

Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 32 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image. Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. Moving subjects are also detected to ensure focus and exposure is always correct. For close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

In Easy mode the camera automatically selects all the camera settings, deactivating all buttons except those used for shooting – ideal for beginners or children.

High-speed shooting

The HS System also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst

In High-speed burst mode the camera can take up to 3.7 shots per second at full 12.1 Megapixels resolution or 8.8 shots per second at 2.5 Megapixels resolution. The camera allows you to capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode captures movies at a staggering 240 frames per second (fps) and plays them back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. It’s now possible to shoot VGA quality at 120fps in addition to QVGA at 240fps. The free software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing for your footage to be viewed both at real or slow motion speed, so you won’t miss a moment.

Handheld Night Scene

Capture blur-free night scenes with the Handheld Night Scene mode. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and combines them into one blur-free image.

Miniature effect
Miniature effect transforms normal landscapes into miniature lookalikes

Choice of shooting modes

With the IXUS 220 HS, you also have the option of selecting from a full range of shooting modes that you can count on for exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough.

New scene modes allow you to easily expand your photographic results. These include Miniature effect, which reproduces the effect of a very narrow depth of field transforming normal landscapes into miniature lookalikes, Fisheye which reproduces the effect of a Fisheye lens in three different levels of intensity and Monochrome which uses different Colour Filters (e.g. sepia). There are also new photo effect modes: Super Vivid which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result, Poster which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect, Toy Camera that changes the tone of the shot (e.g. cool or warm), Low Light for when you want to capture atmospheric shots without a flash and Multi-Aspect shooting to choose whether your photograph is taken in a specific aspect ratio (4:5, 16:9. 1:1 etc.)

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, every time the shutter is pushed the action 4 seconds before is recorded as a movie and collated into one complete highlights video every day. Each photograph you will have taken will have a special 4 second memory-jogging movie clip to accompany it.

Power efficient with quick recharge

The IXUS 220 HS runs off an intelligent rechargeable Li-Ion battery that will give you hours of shooting pleasure and is quick and easy to recharge.

Shoot with confidence

Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence straight from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour delivering a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Fast, intelligent processing and superb image quality

Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology locates faces in a shot and automatically adjusts for natural skin tones
Face Detection

With Face Detection, up to 35 faces can be detected in each shot and focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance are all automatically adjusted for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones.

Face Select & Track

Face Select & Track allows a single face in a crowd to be selected and tracked as the main subject.

Smile and Wink Detection Self-Timer

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the shutter pressed and the self-timer starts, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame.

It then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and once the main subject smiles or winks it adjusts focus and exposure before taking the picture.

Motion Detection Technology Motion

Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

Automatic Red-Eye Correction

WP-DC320L and WP-DC41 waterproof cases

Automatic Red-Eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by the flash.

Rich razor-sharp images - every time

The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 70 years of experience for outstanding results.

Underwater accessories

The IXUS 220 HS is compatible with two optional waterproof cases. The Canon WP-DC320L is a slim waterproof case that provides water-resistance up to 3 metres making it the perfect photography accessory for taking photos whilst snorkelling or just for the additional protection it offers against the elements. Alternatively, for deeper underwater photography, the Canon WP-DC41 offers protection up to 40 metres whilst still allowing you to shoot fantastic photos and movies making it ideal for scuba diving.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow 5 April 2011
this camera is superb. it replaced an old 850is and is a step change in quality (the 850 was very good).
it's well made and takes superb pictures and full hd movies.
Plugged into the TV with the (optional) HDMI cable the quality is stunning.
it's low light capability is amazing.
it's very very fast
the screen is bright and reasonable resolution
it has loads of modes, but automatic is probably all you really need.
24mm wide angle is a great feature.
battery lasts pretty well (I guess as quoted, around 200 pictures)
I've just taken this around Viet Nam and could not have asked for more from it, the old SX10is hardly got taken out of the bag!

Dabbling in photography since I was a student (I took Photography as an A-level) I would class myself as an amateur photographer. I started out about 10 years ago in digital photography with a very early 1MP Olympus and saw the benefits of digital straight away.

Since then I've used a Sony DSLR and a few P&S cameras (Samsung, Canon & Panasonic) with my favourite being a Panasonic Lumix. The Lumix had everything for me in particular its size (very small) and a wide angled lens (25mm). I had been looking to replace the Lumix because I know that sensors and processors have improved to produce better low light images (mainly noise reduction techniques).

One of the challenges I face, like most consumers I would imagine, is that there are SO many P&S cameras out there it's unlikely you'll find your perfect camera. Doing my research I settled on the forthcoming Canon S100 - the successor to the S95 - as it ticked every box: wide angle, raw, gps, high speed burst mode (full resolution) etc etc. The only drawback is that it is bigger than I wanted. And expensive for a P&S (£390). I went ahead and made my purchase on Amazon knowing that it was on pre-sale and wouldn't be available for the next few months.

In the meantime I stumbled upon the IXUS 220 HS by chance. It seemed to tick all the boxes: wide angled, Full HD movies, smaller than my Lumix, good looking, great low light performance with the same CMOS sensor that's in the S100. And only £145 on Amazon PLUS £20 cash-back from Canon (winter 2012 cash-back promo) it seemed to good to be true. I went ahead and cancelled the order for the S100 and re-ordered the 220 HS instead.

The day the camera arrived I took it to an awards dinner to give it a test drive and the results were superb. I prefer taking my shots with the flash forced off which usually results in blurred shots but because of the HS system and the improved noise reduction at higher ISO's, the images are remarkably good. Blacks do get a little noisy at 1600 but for the everyday consumer it is more than acceptable. What's more the little camera fit very comfortably into the pocket of my Tux.

I experimented with some of the other features of the camera yesterday and the breadth of what's offered in this little camera coupled with the price tag makes it the only P&S camera I would recommend to friends and family.

UPDATE AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP
----------------------------------------------

I'm still really very pleased with the camera. It hasn't let me down - the photos are great, 1080i video great. An all round good camera.

However, I have noticed that sometimes the photos can be a little soft - most recently at an important work event (we had David Cameron, the Prime Minister vist our offices) I noticed that some shots were soft when I got them home. Disappointing as I wanted them to come out tip top so put the camera onto Auto mode. To compound this at a night out recently in a darker-than-usual pub, many shots came out blurred beyond recognition and I would suggest that this camera has big troubles focussing on subjects in low light situations.

Because of this, I've knocked a star off of the rating.

Summary

Pros
----
For the price it's a fantastic buy
Shares some of the same hardware and features of more expensive Canon P&S cameras
Very compact - easily slips into jeans or shirt pocket
Full HD movies
Some great new photo effects (Toy Camera is particularly interesting)

Cons
----
Issues with focussing in poorly lit sitations
Some shots soft in lower light
Zoom not as long as some others - but that's not what i bought this camera for.
Flash is not in the best of positions. Can result in putting your finger over it or the flash gets obstructed by the lens barrel at certain focal lengths. Not a huge issue for me though

5.0 out of 5 stars Best camera I have owned..... 2 Sep 2011
I bought this camera just before a trip to Turkey. I had previously owned a Sony which I think may have had a fault from purchase as if I took 5 identical pictures, 2 or 3 would be blurry. I contemplated a SLR but wanted to have something that slipped into the pocket and could be taken anywhere and not have to fear leaving on a table or suchlike. I was a little apprehensive that the photo's may not be the quality I sought but weighed up size, cost and spec and went for this one.

And how happy I am with it. In fact, the best camera I have owned. It has put to shame the photo's from the rest of the family ones taken on hols and what is great is that the quality is so good that I could take random ones, zoom in afterwards and get a perfect picture.

I was particularly impressed with the zoom on it. Didn't expect much from such a compact camera but the natural zoom was fantastic and then the digital zoom was very impressive. Even when zoomed right out, the picture would look grainy until you hit the button and it all went perfect.

This camera is perfect for those who just want to take a picture, the camera works everything out. But by the flick of a switch, it goes into manual and you can choose your settings. I know very little about ISO, aperture, shutter speeds etc so its pointless me trying to work out what they should be. So I let the camera do the work.

The video is excellent. Full HD quality, okay does take up a lot of memory but the playback is brilliant and the sound was very very good.

Would recommend a big memory card. I went for 16gb which was only £20 or so and I took 350 highest quality pictures and about 15 mins of highest quality video and it took up 6gb.

All in all, a fantastic product!!!!
