Improved shots in tricky lighting conditions with HS System

Canon HS System
With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled

The IXUS 220 HS features the powerful Canon HS System, which allows for excellent high image quality, especially in low light conditions, plus high speed stills and movie shooting. Capturing well exposed subjects inside, against dark backgrounds or outside in low light can be difficult. The flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of hand-held shooting. With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled – maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature also offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the contrast in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without over exposing correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Get closer to the action with a 5x optical zoom

You can get up close and personal, even with faraway subjects with the IXUS 220 HS’s 5x optical zoom. Its versatility means you can really explore your creative options and it’s perfect for capturing the action whether you’re at a sporting event or at a concert. Meanwhile a 2.7" PureColor II G LCD has toughened scratch resistant glass making HD recording, shooting and playback a breeze.

Canon's Dynamic Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for almost every kind of movement from the gentle murmurs of your breathing to the vibrations of a car ride, so your movies will always have a smooth, professional look. Easily switch from Standard Mode to Dynamic Range when you want to stabilise heavy hand shake on the move e.g. when walking, shooting from a moving car or even when shooting at maximum zoom.

Effortless shooting - superb results

When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject so, the effortless IXUS 220 HS offers two simple shooting modes - Smart Auto and Easy Mode.

Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 32 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image. Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. Moving subjects are also detected to ensure focus and exposure is always correct. For close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

In Easy mode the camera automatically selects all the camera settings, deactivating all buttons except those used for shooting – ideal for beginners or children.

High-speed shooting

The HS System also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst

In High-speed burst mode the camera can take up to 3.7 shots per second at full 12.1 Megapixels resolution or 8.8 shots per second at 2.5 Megapixels resolution. The camera allows you to capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode captures movies at a staggering 240 frames per second (fps) and plays them back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. It’s now possible to shoot VGA quality at 120fps in addition to QVGA at 240fps. The free software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing for your footage to be viewed both at real or slow motion speed, so you won’t miss a moment.

Handheld Night Scene

Capture blur-free night scenes with the Handheld Night Scene mode. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and combines them into one blur-free image.

Miniature effect
Miniature effect transforms normal landscapes into miniature lookalikes

Choice of shooting modes

With the IXUS 220 HS, you also have the option of selecting from a full range of shooting modes that you can count on for exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough.

New scene modes allow you to easily expand your photographic results. These include Miniature effect, which reproduces the effect of a very narrow depth of field transforming normal landscapes into miniature lookalikes, Fisheye which reproduces the effect of a Fisheye lens in three different levels of intensity and Monochrome which uses different Colour Filters (e.g. sepia). There are also new photo effect modes: Super Vivid which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result, Poster which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect, Toy Camera that changes the tone of the shot (e.g. cool or warm), Low Light for when you want to capture atmospheric shots without a flash and Multi-Aspect shooting to choose whether your photograph is taken in a specific aspect ratio (4:5, 16:9. 1:1 etc.)

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, every time the shutter is pushed the action 4 seconds before is recorded as a movie and collated into one complete highlights video every day. Each photograph you will have taken will have a special 4 second memory-jogging movie clip to accompany it.

Power efficient with quick recharge

The IXUS 220 HS runs off an intelligent rechargeable Li-Ion battery that will give you hours of shooting pleasure and is quick and easy to recharge.

Shoot with confidence

Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence straight from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour delivering a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Fast, intelligent processing and superb image quality

Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology locates faces in a shot and automatically adjusts for natural skin tones
Face Detection

With Face Detection, up to 35 faces can be detected in each shot and focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance are all automatically adjusted for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones.

Face Select & Track

Face Select & Track allows a single face in a crowd to be selected and tracked as the main subject.

Smile and Wink Detection Self-Timer

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the shutter pressed and the self-timer starts, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame.

It then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and once the main subject smiles or winks it adjusts focus and exposure before taking the picture.

Motion Detection Technology Motion

Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

Automatic Red-Eye Correction

Automatic Red-Eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by the flash.

Rich razor-sharp images - every time

The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 70 years of experience for outstanding results.

Underwater accessories

The IXUS 220 HS is compatible with two optional waterproof cases. The Canon WP-DC320L is a slim waterproof case that provides water-resistance up to 3 metres making it the perfect photography accessory for taking photos whilst snorkelling or just for the additional protection it offers against the elements. Alternatively, for deeper underwater photography, the Canon WP-DC41 offers protection up to 40 metres whilst still allowing you to shoot fantastic photos and movies making it ideal for scuba diving.

Just to add some perspective to my review; I've been a DSLR user for years, having used many low/medium level SLR's such as Canon 10d/20d/30d/500d/550d's, Nikon D70/D90/D300's, as well as a number of Canon/Nikon/Sony point & shoot cameras, and most recently I bought a Sony NEX-3 - which this camera replaced.

I wanted something smaller than the NEX, with an equally wide lens, good video mode and a decent screen; this camera delivers.

There's no getting around it though; this is a small sensor compact camera, and high ISO performance over ISO 400/800 - depending on use - is questionable. Dynamic range - though extremely impressive compared to pretty much all rival models except those from Fuji - is never going to be in the same league as the above APSC cameras, however that is where the negatives end...

The lens on this beautiful and reassuringly solid little camera is truly amazing; sharp, very little distortion - even at it's widest 24mm (!!!) position - and extremely resistant to flare. Very useful range, though I rarely go past around 50mm equiv.

The JPEG colour rendition is outstanding, if sometimes on the cool side, and JPEG sharpening is good; it's not too strong at all, which I like as it means I have control over the end result through PP. However, it may leave those who want out of the camera perfection wanting more.

The video mode is extremely good; 1080 and 720p both look beautiful, but the most used mode for me - filming a lot of Parkour/Free-running movements - is most definitely the VGA 120 mode. Though the resolution may be significantly lower than what the camera is capable of, the frame rate really does put it up there with some seriously expensive videocameras, making super-slo-mo available for the consumer Market.
If you're into your video, you'll be mesmerised by how smooth and clear the video from such a small sensor is.

The auto-mode is extremely good for those looking for a simple P&S camera; in various different scenarios it managed to balance get every user-adjustable setting - notably ISO which is rare in Auto-modes - spot on with how I would set things up myself in 'P' mode.

There are numerous pre-sets available, some are ok, some aren't - I find myself keeping the upper right toggle on the bottom switch in 'P' mode, and switching between that and auto depending on the situation.

As a student, low-light performance - with/without flash - was a priority for me; the NEX was bought as something to stick in my pocket on a night out and get some fun memories, but it was never truly pocketable; this thing is one of the smallest cameras I've ever seen. ...although it's not as good as the NEX without flash, there is very little difference with; if anything, this little Canon's flash is much more effective at covering the frame evenly.

All in all, it's a great little shooter - both for those looking for a simple P&S, and those looking for something a bit special. My other consideration was the S95 - at over twice the price... I'm so glad I went for this though; yes, I'd love a faster lens, and better high-iso performance, but the difference in price between this and the S95 is simply not worth it.
As a matter of fact, the price difference between this and any of the camera's previously mentioned is simply not worth it for what you get.

An all round all star performer, suitable for practically anyone; genuinely the best all-round camera I've ever used.

My last 4 cameras have been canon ixus, I love their pocket size.

This new one continues the tradition. The fact something this small can record full hd video with stereo sound is truly amazing.

Image quality is fantastic, I always think canon gives you great colour reproduction.

The camera is very automatic, so it's really easy to use. If you want to go off piste there is tons of manual options to choose from. My wife is a runner and I find the burst mode fantastic for recording a quick sequence of images.

I can recommend this camera to any buyer who just wants a camera that is easy to use and takes great photos.

******************** Original Review:

My perspective: just upgraded from IXUS 60 to IXUS 220. I chose an IXUS again because I absolutely loved the build quality, functionality and small dimensions of the IXUS 60. I repeat, I absolutely loved the sturdiness of the IXUS 60, which has survived 4 years of intensive use without any failure.

The 220 is once again an excellent design, with no serious flaws and only some minor areas where there's room for improvement. I would like to give it 4.5, but as this is not possible, I give it a 5.

The positive: everything important for a compact camera is done brilliantly by the 220.

1. excellent picture quality
2. very light sensitive sensor, great for night work
3. great build quality
4. sleek design to fit the pocket
5. great value for money
6. functional menu
7. many great modes, some of which are really useful
8. hand held night mode a nice toy (albeit, of course, not as good as tripod shooting)
9. fantastic HD video mode with automatic focus, exposure and manual zoom during shooting.

The neutral: apart from the felt decrease in battery life, only very minor points

1. compared to the IXUS 60, I feel the battery life is somewhat reduced. Only just still acceptable.
2. I'd have wished for a dedicated self timer button (I still have to go through the menu, just like with the IXUS 60)
3. the delivered wrist wrap does not have a tightening piece anymore, as was the case for the one for the IXUS 60

The negative: nothing significant, but in comparison with the IXUS 60, the 220 seems *slightly* less sturdily build!!! Arrrgh, I hate regress, even if its minor!!!!! In particular, the following parts are inferior to the IXUS 60 (I know I am being picky, but I am a scientist working on failure of materials, with a passion for sturdy gadgets):

1. the battery cover is not supported at the edges by the metal casing, as was the case for the IXUS 60 (on 2 of 3 edges). This was necessary because of the round and smooth 220 design, but I feel it makes the flimsy plastic battery cover more vulnerable.
2. whilst the lens cover system is the same as for the IXUS 60, the surrounding edges of the lens of the IXUS 60 had a chamfer and the gap between these edges and the lens cover seemed smaller. I feel that this area of the 220 might attract dust and dirt more easily. Why????
3. the display of the IXUS 60 was `counter-sunk' into the metal casing, whilst the 220 display protrudes out of the metal casing, rendering it less well protected. Was that necessary???
4. the 2 round buttons at the bottom of the back of the 220 (view and menu) both are designed to be even with the casing. The old IXUS 60 ones protruded from the display. Whilst this made it easy to feel their position, it had another positive side effect: they could not be suppressed so much that they could be slid under the metal casing. Now, with the 220, this seems easily possible, and furthermore allows dirt to get underneath the casing.

I hope that Canon will either improve the ruggedness of future IXUS models to the standard of the old ones, or publicly feel very guilty of not doing so. Still, the 220 is well build in general, and comes with a much nicer design compared to the IXUS 60.

Again, in summary, the IXUS 220 is a great design, and a definitive recommendation to buy.

******************** Update 19/05/2011:

After further testing the camera, its outstanding low light capabilities began to really impress me. Night pictures of skylines or the stars can be taken without any noticeable background noise (using 15s exposure). I am convinced that this camera is, in terms of image quality, the best ultra compact around (another league than the Sony TX series with Exmor sensor).

Unfortunately, however, my initial suspicion about its reduced sturdiness got confirmed in the most unpleasant way.

- Firstly, the lens cover did not do its job properly, allowing dust to easily accumulate on the lens
- Furthermore, the newly designed (compared to IXUS 60) lens front surrounding the lens cover is of such thin metal, that it
easily deforms and prevents the lens cover from closing.
- And finally, I got the infamous 'lens error' message after only a few days of using the camera: after switching it one day,
the lens would not retract any more, and the camera could not be used. I treated this black beauty much more carefully than I
used to deal with my IXUS 60 during the last 5 years. To no avail.

Bottomline:

Probably the best ultra compact out there at the moment, but not reliable enough for me. Check out 'Canon Lens Error', and you'll see that this is a common bug, which has been around for ages, and still continues to flaw this otherwise excellent camera series.

I sent it back, thanks to Amazon with full refund, and bought a Sony TX5 instead. Worse image quality, far less control, inferior low light capability, but at lest I can't get this dreaded lens error anymore. And I can put it in my pocket without any worries. And I got HDR...
