More creative options - near or far
You can enjoy great group shots and landscapes with a greater sense of space thanks to the versatile 28mm wide-angle lens. With a wide-angle lens you capture a much wider field of view and have the power to create photos that really catch the eye of the viewer. Meanwhile the 4x optical zoom lets you get up close and personal, whether you are shooting landscapes or a child's smile, delivering razor-sharp precision with lifelike colour every time.

The high resolution 14.1 Megapixels sensor allows you to capture every scene in rich detail, ensuring large prints - even of cropped pictures - retain high image quality. Plus the large 2.7" (6.9cm) PureColor II G LCD screen (now made with tempered glass for enhanced strength and visibility) ensures framing and playing back your images is both easy and enjoyable.

Intelligent by design for the perfect image
Setting the IXUS 130 to Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions - detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information - then selects the perfect settings from 22 specially defined scenes So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

New scene modes allow you to create fish eye lens and miniature effects.

A world of options in the palm of your hand
As well as Smart Auto you can switch the camera to a number of advanced presets for the best possible photos under certain conditions. There are 15 Shooting Modes to choose from including 12 Special Scene Modes, such as Firework, Snow and Beach so you're ready for whatever shot comes your way.

New scene modes allow you to easily expand your photographic results. These include Miniature effect, which reproduces the effect of a very narrow depth of field transforming normal landscapes into miniature look-alikes; and Fish Eye, which reproduces the effect of a fish eye lens in three different levels of intensity There are also two new photo effect modes: Super Vivid and Poster Effect.

Improved shots in low light
The IXUS 130 features a new low light mode for use in places such as pubs, parties and candlelit restaurants where you can't, or don't want to, use flash - automatically allowing you to capture atmospheric shots. Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature, which is available in either shooting or playback mode, offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions.

Smart Flash Exposure intelligently adjusts to give just the correct amount of fill.

Smart Flash Exposure
New Smart Flash Exposure improves natural and ambient lighting in every shot, intelligently adjusting flash exposure to suit the subject and the shooting conditions. In daylight, for example, Smart Flash Exposure will detect and eliminate harsh facial shadows created when light reaches people at an angle, automatically engaging the flash to brighten up any poorly lit features. Flash power is also controlled during close ups, preventing over exposure and retaining image detail of subjects shot from a short distance.

Easy groups shots and self portraits with Smile and Wink detection
Smart Shutter mode brings you a new Smile and Wink Detection Self-Timer that makes taking group photos and self-portraits easier than ever - and with no rush. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started - it then waits not only for an extra face to get in the frame but for that face to wink or smile before releasing the shutter automatically. You can set the camera to take the shot anytime from 2-10 seconds after the wink or smile for the perfect picture every time.

SDXC and Eye-Fi card support
The IXUS 130 incorporates dedicated support functions for the next-generation SDXC memory cards as well as Eye-Fi cards. SDXC cards are for high capacity storage of up to 2TB (2 Terabytes = 2,000 Gigabytes) while Eye-Fi are the first memory cards with their own Wi-Fi transmitter that allow you to effortlessly transfer pictures or videos directly from the camera to online sharing sites via the Eye-Fi server without the need for a PC. You can also send movies wirelessly to your own PC and customize not just where your pictures and movies are sent but also how you want them organised.

HD Video clips with easy YouTube uploader
As well as taking fantastic still pictures the IXUS 130 allows you to capture video in beautiful high definition (1280 x 720 pixels).

The large bright 2.7" (6.9cm) PureColor II G LCD screen, with toughened scratch resistant glass, helps you frame your movies and also provides a clear, bright viewing screen so you can share them with friends. Or you can connect, using a mini HDMI cable, for playback on a HD widescreen TV with no loss of quality. Either way you and your friends will be amazed by the results.

For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube, Easy Web Upload software is included free in the box. This displays your movie clips and can store your YouTube log in details, so you can just select your clip and upload with one click.

Flawless detection technology
Evolved Face Detection and Motion Detection Technology finds and tracks moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and can even be detected in profile, at an angle to the camera or from long distances. Auto Red-Eye detection ensures flawless photos every time.

Shoot with confidence
Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence right from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed, the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour - adding up to a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results.

The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programs like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor and nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.

Canon's market-leading Optical Image Stabiliser is a lens-shift system that automatically detects and corrects camera shake, whilst ensuring outstanding image quality. It allows handheld shooting at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without blur, giving you steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. Developed initially for Canon's EOS Digital SLR cameras in 1987 it is the fastest in-lens image stabiliser available on the market and ensures the stylish IXUS range has a top quality pedigree.

Fast, intelligent processing
Canon's most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds. It also makes possible the camera's intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection technologies and Canon's i-Contrast feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ixus 130, 22 July 2010
As with all the other positive reviews I don't have anything extra to add EXCEPT CHOOSING THE CORRECT SDHC CARD for this and any other quality camera using HD video recording. If you wish to make video recordings of a longer duration than 25/35 seconds, make sure you choose an SD card that is at least a MINIMUM CLASS 4. I recently bought this camera, a case and an 8 gb SD card as advertised by Amazon which stated that most people purchased it 'when buying this camera' (which happened to be a CLASS 2). When my recordings were being cut short to less than half a minute, I scoured the internet to see if anybody else had this problem-and yes they had-but no answers as to why. After scrolling through various Canon literature, I found in the small print it says quite nonchalantly "don't use an SD card of a lower value than Class 4 or your recording could stop at any given time.." - this quote isn't verbatim but is the general crux. I am not forwarding any blame on Amazon or Canon but I think that there should be a recommendation of a minimum value SD card and what would happen if you ignored the advice.
Of course, should you wish to make 'mini recordings' of just a few seconds then the standard Class 2 is for you. Needless to say, there is a jump in price for the higher Class 4. I hope this review is of help to anyone about to choose this or maybe any other quality camera that has the fabulous HD feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars First review of the Canon Ixus 130, 21 Mar 2010
This review is from: Canon IXUS 130 Digital Camera - Silver (14.1 MP, 4x Optical Zoom) 2.7 Inch PureColor LCD (Electronics)
I decided to upgrade from my Canon Ixus 50,which was an absolute revelation when it came out, to the Ixus 130. The 50 is still perfect and my brother is delighted with it, his first digicam. The 130 is a design masterpiece - so small, I could not see it in the box at first, but surprisingly although thinner it is slightly longer and taller. Lightweight but solidly constructed & easily fits in your pocket. Fundamentally, the controls are very similar, but more intuitive, so you do not need to digest volumes of complicated instructions. If you want a point and shoot, you cannot go wrong with this. It also has plenty of functionality, a wide angle lens for group and vista shots as well as a telephoto & the vids are amazing. If you are a real camera head, you will want to keep your SLR, but a pound to a penny, you cannot resist a compact for portability and versatility. This is simple to use and also has many advanced features, which help you take the perfect shot. If you want to get a lot more techie, you can use the program mode. I am going to have fun with this and you will too. I will update my review in a few months after I have given it a complete road test.

UPDATE OF IXUS 130
This camera will re-awaken your interest in photography. I used it on two holidays & the difference in quality between the earlier Ixus 50 & this is simply staggering. I would not have thought it possible. Point & shoot is superb, but it is easy to switch to programs specifically for sunny beach shots, sun-sets etc & zoom in on detail other cameras can not get to. Amazing, I am so pleased.

This is a great little camera with the emphasis on little! One of the neatest packages imaginable, it has the lot including 1030 video! If it has a fault, it's that it is not quite quick enough to respond for, say wildlife. There is a definite lag after you press the shutter release whilst it focusses and works out exposure. I tried to photograph some dolphins jumping and all I've got is tails in the water!
