Capture the scene exactly as you see it with Canon’s HS System

The power of Canon’s HS System comes from the combination of the 16.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s advanced DIGIC 5 processor. The HS System gives incredibly high image quality in all light conditions and enables the camera to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing over-exposure of highlighted areas and loss of detail in the shadows. This means that you can preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.

Outstanding results in low light

Canon’s HS System truly excels in low light conditions. It can often be challenging to capture well exposed subjects inside against dark backgrounds, or outside in low light; the flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. Canon’s HS System reduces the camera’s reliance on flash in low-light situations - background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled, maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur. As a result you can capture great low-light images without needing to use the flash as often.

Less noise, clearer detail

The HS System allows for significant noise reduction at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash. Shots are striking and detailed, with the 16.1 Megapixel sensor capturing more than enough detail to reproduce images onto large poster-sized formats.

Blur-free images whatever the situation

The IXUS 125 HS benefits from Canon’s Intelligent IS technology. Whether you’re shooting stills or movies, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the shooting situation and then selects the most appropriate type of optical image stabilization from 7 modes. For example, when capturing a close-up of a flower the camera will automatically select Macro IS with Hybrid IS technology, but then it will automatically switch to Powered IS when filming distant subjects with the zoom. This allows you to focus on framing the image you want, safe in the knowledge that the camera is working to eliminate as much camera shake as possible, even if you need to move with your scene.

Exceptional lens quality

The IXUS 125 HS benefits from Canon’s class-leading lens technology. It boasts a 24 mm wide-angle lens, allowing you to fit more in the frame – perfect for group shots. Plus, the 5x optical zoom enables you to get up close and personal, even with distant subjects.

In addition to the optical zoom, the IXUS 125 HS also features Canon’s advanced digital zoom technology, ZoomPlus. This extends the camera’s overall zoom range to 10x, without losing sharpness and detail in the image as a conventional digital zoom would.

Fast-paced, full High Definition movies

For moments that are best caught on video, the IXUS 125 HS offers advanced video performance with the capability to record Full HD movies at 1080p with HDMI-CEC compatibility ensuring optimum playback on High Definition televisions. The 5x optical zoom is also available during filming, allowing you to get really close to the action, plus Smart Auto can detect 21 different types of scene, ensuring it looks just as you see it.

Large, high quality display

The IXUS 125 HS features a large 7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD. This high quality 460k dot screen makes framing and reviewing images easy, even from difficult angles or in bright light. Meanwhile, the outer layer of toughened scratch resistant glass ensures that the display has extra durability.

Effortless shooting, superb results

When you're taking photographs, the only thing you want to think about is your subject, so Canon’s Smart Auto mode removes the worry of deciding which settings to select. It enables the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject.

In Smart Auto mode, Canon’s Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 58 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. It allows the camera to identify moving subjects to ensure the focus and exposure are always correct. For sharp close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode and Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Additionally, Multi-area White Balance correction enables incredibly accurate colour reproduction. For example, usually when shooting indoors where the subject is lit by flash and the background is illuminated by artificial lighting, the multiple light sources can distort the colours in the image. But Canon’s Multi-area White Balance correction eliminates this problem so that the natural skin tones of the subject are retained, whilst the colours in the background also remain true-to-life.

Prioritise your family and friends

Face ID allows you to register up to 12 faces with names and birthdays so that the camera can automatically prioritise these individuals in every shot. Once the faces have been registered, Smart Auto uses the information to prioritise focus on these faces, regardless of how many other subjects are in the frame. This ensures that the camera always captures the best possible images of the people who are most important to you. It also makes it easy to search for photographs of specific friends or family members when you play back your images.

Additionally, Face ID uses the birthdays that you register to work in conjunction with Smart Auto to enable you to take better photographs in a range of different situations. For example, if Smart Auto detects a baby (0 – 2 years old) in the frame that is smiling it will automatically take multiple images and then select the best image for you.

High-speed shooting

The high-sensitivity CMOS sensor also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst

In High-speed Burst mode the IXUS 125 HS can effectively capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or everyday life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode slows down fast-moving subjects by capturing QVGA resolution video at a staggering 240 frames per second (VGA resolution at 120fps) - which can then be played back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. This is perfect for analysing a golf swing, recording a bird in flight or just for a bit of fun. The software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing you to view your footage both at real or slow motion speed.

Handheld Night Scene

Handheld Night Scene mode allows you to capture clear, detailed night scenes. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and then combines the image data into a single image, ensuring the best possible exposure with the least amount of blur – perfect for handheld shots taken at night.

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, Movie Digest allows you to create an HD quality (720p) quality film telling the story behind the images you’ve captured that day. Every time a still image is captured, the preceding 4 seconds is automatically recorded as a movie clip - these are then automatically collated into one complete video showing the highlights of the day.

The IXUS 125 HS is compatible with a range of optional accessories including a waterproof case (WP-DC330L) which provides water-resistance down to 3 metres making it the perfect photography accessory for taking photos whilst snorkelling or just for the additional protection it offers against the elements.

Bought this camera for my wife in June after the previous compact camera (Nikon Coolpix) failed. We wanted a simple point and shoot, without lots of features as I have a DSLR if I'm going to be taking lots of pictures. We were looking for a small, light camera, with a reasonably wide angle lens and a wide aperture for shooting in low light without flash.

After 9 months' use, we are really happy with it - it meets all of our basic criteria and I've found to my amazement that it's sometimes better to use than the DSLR (note better to use, not necessarily better pictures). The size and weight makes it easy to carry in a pocket and the wide aperture bring out the best with low light.

My two gripes with the camera - I'd like to be able to set the aperture (e.g. I want more depth of field) and I can't see why Canon can't add a RAW shooting mode - afterall, the DIGIC processor should be able to handle it easily enough.

In conclusion, it is surprising how much compact digital cameras have improved in the four years since we bought our last one and I'd highly recommend this as something you can always have with you - after all, the biggest part of picture taking is having the camera there at all!

I bought this Ixus 125 HS to replace an Ixus 60 which has produced excellent photographs over the past eight years. The camera retains all the virtues of the Ixus series including a metal body, good ergonomics and a fantastic lens quality and demonstrates Moore's Law in action as it is smaller, lighter, has a 268% larger CCD sensor, a 20% bigger LCD screen, a 67% longer zoom (equivalent to a 24mm-120mm zoom on a 35mm camera) and is less than half the price of its predecessor. It now has a battery strength indicator and optical image stabilisation and can record movies via a dedicated button in 1080p HD quality. The rear LCD screen is protected by a sheet of glass and there is no optical viewfinder but then non-DSLRs with optical viewfinders are a vanishing breed. If you want a small, tough, high quality camera that you can rely on then buy one of these. Buy a good quality 8Gb memory card (good for over a thousand photographs at maximum resolution or half an hour's HD video filming) and a case (the Lowepro Altus 10 Small Camera Pouch is ideal) to preserve this beautiful piece of engineering. Highly recommended.

I bought the green version of this camera a few weeks ago from via Amazon. Since then l have been quite amazed at how good it really is compared to other digital cameras that l own. It copes particularly well with focusing near and far in the same indoor shots, and with the flash turned off presents no problem with ensuring enough light is allowed into the lens to produce a great picture.
Due to the weather l have not taken many outdoor shots with it yet but have no reason to believe that l will not be pleased with its end results.
At first l found it tricky to find my way around the various settings as there is no detailed manual with it - only an initial set up one, the rest is left to you to discover or spend hours downloading instructions from the internet.
I am now considering purchasing a 2nd one to replace another of my older cameras as l always take a pair on holiday "just in case" and it saves space if they use the same battery charger.

Picked this camera up as a Christmas present for my Fiance at the last minute in John Lewis - same price as Amazon but includes a 4 GB high-speed SD Card, Canon black leather case with fabric rainbow ribbon detail and matching rainbow lanyard.

My Fiance expressed a desire to have a new digital camera recently but she is not fond of spending large sums of money on technology products and initially I had been "told" to simply get her the same camera as we had recently bought for her daughter for her birthday (Nikon L26). While the L26 is a perfectly decent little snapper which I would have had no real problems with buying for my Fiance I thought I'd hold out a little while and see what else was around. I've been using digital cameras for about 15 years now and have owned various models from Fujifilms at the very inception of digital cameras, through super compacts like the original Sony T1, and my last purchase for myself, a Canon EOS 350D... I know my way around a digital camera and consider myself something of a pro-enthusiast level user.

In browsing the varied range in John Lewis I was particularly taken with this Canon's compact dimensions, good looks and sturdy build quality (metal body). The included case, strap and memory card were a deal clincher.

Due to work commitments my family is celebrating Christmas Day today (Christmas Eve) so my Fiance has now received and started using the camera, I thought I'd share some observations;
The leather case available in the starter pack I purchased is made specifically for the camera and offers a tailored fit, with a fabric lining to prevent scratches. The lanyard is durable and instills confidence in its use to prevent drops while also keeping the camera ready-to-hand.
