Manufacturer's Description
The EOS 300V is an analog SLR film camera that combines high-end features and performance within a compact, lightweight and robust metallic body. It also offers the fastest autofocus in its class. Setting the benchmark for consumer SLR cameras, the new compact EOS 300V incorporates novel styling and enhanced technology features.Seven focusing points, and the fastest AF area in its class, mean that the EOS 300V focuses quickly. The active focusing point is superimposed in red in the viewfinder. The exposure metering system uses 35 zones, linked to the active focusing point. The command dial has been moved to the right, enabling you to operate all the main controls with one hand.In addition to the usual five basic programmed image control shooting modes, the EOS 300V offers a new "flash-off" mode, which disables the built-in flash, or an attached speedlite. The LCD panel has been moved to the back of the camera and is about three times larger than the panel on the EOS 300. The camera has a wide choice of accessories and the metal EF mount is compatible with over 60 EF lenses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Limitations, 11 Sep 2003
This camera is definitely a strong contender. The auto focusing is very fast though struggles in low light. The evaluative 35 zone metering is very accurate. The ergonomics of the camera are excellent. I find that it handles very well even with my heavy 28-135 IS lens attached. It has a metal lens mount which distinguishes it from amny of its budget competitors and means it should give years of faithful service.

Now for the cons. There is no mirror lock up (or prefire) or onboard flash compensation. Some may consider these serious problems. Unlike many of the old Nikons the mirror kick is very slight and even though I often shoot from a tripod I don't miss this. I use a Canon 550EX flash which allows for flash compensation so I have never had to confront that problem. My biggest criticism of this camera is the lack of a spot meter. Why Canon chose to have "partial" metering mode rather than a honest spot meter I don't know. Using the partial metering mode as a spot meter is possible if you can zoom until the "spot" subject covers the 10% of the frame which the partial meter reads. The camera also does not allow for full time manual focusing however manually focusing using the non-interchangeable focusing screen is hit and miss. The Servo AI focus mode is non accessible from Manual or Program mode. Since my subjects are almost always stationary I couldn't care less. If you are interested in action photography this may be a limitation.

An excellent camera for the price. Given the choice again I would probably pay a little more to get a spot meter but that is the only feature I really miss.

4.0 out of 5 stars True Class, 27 Jul 2003
Canon's latest rendition of it's EOS 300 is a brilliant little camera. It has a vastly different shape to that of the 300 and the 300n, it's a lot more compact and the 'space-age' stylingis more ergonomically rewarding, making it very easy to hold and operate. The camera has a nice substantial, yet not too heavy weight.

The unit features Canon's 'creative' and 'program' modes, so there is a level of control suited to most needs, from fully manual operation right up to totally automatic. It can handle around 2 frames per second so a degree of sports or nature photography is possible. The LCD which displays the ISO and shutter speeds etc has been moved to the back of the camera (where you would find the LCD on a digital camera) as oposed to the top as with most auto SLR's. This in turn allows a bigger LCD for easier viewing, and the backlight is a fantastic inclusion for when natural light is low.

The 300v is a vast improvement on the series, and I thoroughly reccomend it to anyone after a 'budget' SLR, because for the price it really does impress. And because it's compatable Canon's EOS range, including EF lenses... vital if you intend on taking a picture ;o). it's a very good way of getting on the EOS ladder, should you want to

It doesn't dissapoint

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for budging photographers and enthusiastic hobbyists., 28 Jul 2003

(REAL NAME)
The Canon 300V offers fully automatic, semi-automatic, and fully manual settings allowing you to experiment with the artistic side of photography or to just point and shoot.
The controls are laid out so the thumb and forefinger are all that is needed to change the settings, allowing you to keep your eye on the subject.
The 300V is ideal for budging photographers and enthusiastic hobbyists.

The only down side is Canon lenses and accessories are on the expensive side.
