Manufacturer's Description

CanonCam_EOS1000D

EOS 1000D
Featuring a 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, 7-point wide area AF system and up to 3fps continuous JPEG shooting (limited to size of individual SD card used), the EOS 1000D represents a more affordable entry point to the world of EOS cameras – whilst taking full advantage of over 70 years of imaging expertise.

With the lightest body of any digital EOS camera, the EOS 1000D incorporates a range of technologies used in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor, and Live View mode.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens included

EOS 1000D Highlights

10.1 Megapixels

The number of megapixels determines the amount of sharp detail a digital camera can record. With more megapixels, you can print at larger sizes, plus crop and enlarge without sacrificing quality. EOS cameras provide all the resolution you need for finely detailed, photo-quality prints with plenty of scope for post-shoot cropping.

A 10.1 Megapixel sensor lets you capture every scene in ultra-high levels of detail – perfect for turning your experiences into poster-sized photo prints.

7 Point Wide Area AF

The precise auto focus system of the EOS 1000D keeps you focused for sharp images. Featuring a diamond-shaped array of seven AF points, this newly improved system delivers outstanding coverage of nearly any subject, both in horizontal and vertical formats. The seven AF points — one high-precision cross-type center AF point with f/2.8 sensitivity and six others compatible at f/5.6 — provide fast, accurate auto focus for any Canon EF lens even when shooting in low-light environments. Focus points can be assigned automatically using one of three different AF modes or manually.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

The EOS Integrated Cleaning System combats sensor dust in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove. The camera's Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit shakes dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor. The dust is then trapped by an adhesive along the base, preventing it from causing further nuisance. Cleaning is engaged each time the camera is powered up or shut down or manually through the "clean now" function.

DIGIC III

Canon’s revolutionary DIGIC image processors work at the heart of every EOS digital camera. It is the power of DIGIC that delivers the superb EOS image quality, responsive camera performance, faster AF, faster continuous shooting and extended battery life. DIGIC processors are so fast they can read, process, compress and write image data back to the buffer between exposures, reducing the data
bottleneck for extended continuous shooting.

2.5" LCD with Live View

The Cameras Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen.

RAW

The EOS 1000D is supplied with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the photograph needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control.

EF / EFS / EX

The EOS 1000D camera is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, as well as EX-series Speedlites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon EOS 1000D DSLR - USER Review, 31 Oct 2008
By David Glasgow (United Kingdom (Edinburgh)) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've owned my Canon 1000D for about 3 weeks now and have given it a reasonable test drive. The one thing that strikes me most is the ease at which I can find my way around the camera instantly to find the correct settings (very intuitive). Everything is where it should be, and clearly well marked.

The Camera noise is non-exsistant at ISO 800 and ISO 1600, (outstanding). The EOS 1000D is very similar in shape and style to the 450D, it even shares the exact same "LIVE VIEW" technology, all the button's are the same, layout the same, just the 1000D sports a 10mp Sensor and the 450D a 12mp Sensor. I so far have only used the 18-55mm image stabilized kit lens, and am very satisfied with the results, the 1000D Kit lens construction and optics are far superior to the kit lens supplied with the Canon Eos 400D, I've read all the reviews before buying this camera, and most professional reviewers compliment the new Canon "Optical Image Stabilized" Kit lens that comes with the EOS 1000D camera. I have taken a variety of shots in many conditions and I must say I can't find any fault with the Kit lens; its very sharp and provides nice clean shots from 18mm through to 55mm.

(I have managed several indoor hand held shot's as low as a 1/8th of a second), it was no problem at all, the image came out razor sharp as you would expect from a Canon EOS DSLR with I.S technology. In very dim or very low light conditions you can adjust the film speed to ISO 1600, the results are truly superb, no noise or evidence of any grain whatsoever.

The Highlight of the Camera for me was Canon's very impressive software package, the highly sought after - "(DPP) DIGITAL PHOTO PROFESSIONAL", "RAW IMAGE TASK", "PHOTO STITCH", and "PICTURE STYLE EDITOR" + other Canon Utilities... to me this software is priceless (in my view), and is a lovely addition to the EOS 1000D Camera outfit.

If you have always wanted a Canon DSLR Camera but never had the Dosh, now is the perfect time, much better technology at a very affordable price.

At the current price you will find it very hard to beat. (anywhere.!)
Highly Recommended. 9/10

Please be so Kind to rate my review - Cheers! David.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early days but..., 24 Nov 2008

...I really can't fault this.

I'm the first to admit that I am no expert in photography: this is my first DSLR so I am still learning as I go along. Friends who do know what they are taking about and have the 400D have expressed a degree of envy so I know it is capable of all the advanced stuff - but even as a novice I can see the difference.

In full auto mode it takes perfectly acceptable photos, and the image stabilisation helps a lot. I am still experimenting with the more advanced modes, learning one thing at a time, but full auto is a good safety net.

Battery life looks good too. I have taken about 300 photos so far and the battery level display has still not dropped from the full setting. As it was a new toy you can imagine this involved a lot more pointless zooming than strictly necessary and my old compact would have been drained long ago. I would feel confident taking this away for a day out, or even a week's holiday, without any means to re-charge it. Re-charging is quick too (although the initial charge when I got it was possibly the longest two hours of my life!)

I was torn between this and the 450D and eventually decided that for the cost of the 450 I could live without an extra 2 megapixels and 2 more auto focus points. Not having an infrared port is the only niggle, but you can find third-party remotes that provide that if necessary.

So far I have found that this is ideal for a beginner like me. That is not to say that it is at all limited, but it is a comfort to know that I can still take decent pictures while I am still getting the hang of it, and even if I never do learn how to use all the functions I will still have something that is a great improvement on what went before.

A perfect introduction to the world of DSLR I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars DSLR newbies start here, 12 Jan 2009
Moving into the world of DSLRs from a pentax point and shoot, I was looking for something that would give me a significant upgrade in image quality. I did a huge amount of research, and shortlisted this and it's more expensive sister model the 450D, the Nikon D60, two Sony Alphas and offerings from Olympus and Pentax.

After extensive trawling of magazine and internet reviews and discussion forums, handling of cameras in shops (definitely worth doing if buying your first DSLR)I ended up with the two canons, the sony A350 and the Nikon on the shortlist. I plumped for the 1000D, as I didn't think paying the extra for the more expensive canon or Sony (both around an extra £100) would give me a proportionate (33%) increase in image quality.

I have not regretted my decision at all, and have been really impressed by the output of the canon. For a newbie to the SLR world, it's very easy to use. Aside from the full auto mode, the various preset modes (eg sports, close ups, portrait) are just as easy to use and produce great results. From looking at the instruction book, it's clear the more advanced settings will give me more than enough flexibility to grow as a photographer.

Of the things I've learnt during my exhaustive search for the right entry to the world of DSLR, I'd say perhaps the most important are (a) don't put too much emphasis on "live view" (using the screen on the back to frame images) - with an SLR it just feels "right" to use the view finder); (b) you can't compare mega pixels to mega pixels with a compact camera; (c) the fast start up and shutter speed on a DSLR really does make a difference when upgrading from a point and shoot.

So in summary, love this camera. Don't forget to get a memory card, and a bag and third party "how to" book is also a good idea. Happy shooting.
