Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

EOS digital SLRs are backed up by the world's most comprehensive system of interchangeable lenses. From 14mm ultra wide angle to 600mm super telephoto, the 60+ lenses in the EF series cover all possible shooting requirements. See the world from new perspectives. Capture your vision through the eyes of EOS.

Fixed focal length lenses generally offer a wider maximum aperture than zoom lenses. From ultra-wide angle lenses ideal for indoor shooting to long telephoto lenses extensively used for wildlife, sports and news photography Canon has the fixed focal length lens to suit you.

This 35mm L-Series lens boasts the brightness of the largest aperture in its class and unrivaled natural delineation. A ground and polished aspherical glass lens element (9th) thoroughly eliminates spherical aberration and distortion.

It achieves extremely sharp, faultless image quality only possible with a single focal length lens. A floating mechanism in its optical system corrects all aberrations in the medium and near focusing distances to maintain the lens' super image quality from the closest shooting distance of 0.3m to infinity.

The AF drive system features silent, high-speed AF using rear focus system and a ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor). A wide focus ring permits smooth full-time manual focusing. The non-rotating filter frame affords easy use of circular polarizing and other type of filters. All eleven lens elements are made of environment-friendly lead-free glass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous lens 7 Oct 2009

Everything you may have read about this lens is true; it is capable of taking the most amazing photographs. Yes, it is very expensive - but it's worth it:

I do not find it easy to use, wide-open it can be difficult to get the focus where you want it, so the "keeper" ratio isn't great; But with digital photography, that is no longer a big issue.

BUT, The lens has great colours and contrast, and of course the big max aperture lets you take photos where you'd never bother even trying before; I hate flash and I hardly ever use it with this lens; it seems almost an insult to do so. Natural low light + F1.4 can give your pictures a dreamy almost cinematic look. My copy seems to sharpen up a bit at f1.8 or so but even at f1.4 I've got some some fantastic pictures. And I don't miss having a zoom at all, you just get used to having to walk around more; I need the exercise anyway. I've been "bitten" by the prime bug and now also have a 135mm f2.

I'm using it with my trusty old EOS20; you may get even better results with a full-frame SLR.

I thoroughly recommend it - it can take your photography to a new place.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A beaut! 17 April 2012
I borrowed this lens for a wedding last year and the results were so stunning that I knew I had to buy one, even my wife agreed for a change!

So buy one I did and I couldn't be happier. I find it to be really sharp, even wide open at f/1.4 it is sharp but you need to be spot on with your focusing. Colour rendition, bokeh and all that jazz are beautiful and the AF motor is speedy enough too.

This is now my 5DII's permanent partner. Happy days!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless 21 Nov 2011
    By Tom
Truly stunning. Can't fault it. Sold a 24-105L and 50 1.4 to fund it and don't regret it for a second. Sharpness, colour, versatility all first rate. Costly, but well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, if a bit pricey 22 April 2011
Ive had this lens for about 18 months and its one of my sharpest lenses, only beaten by the 135 and 200 mm L primes, which gives you an idea of how sharp it can be (it's a bit trickier to use in fairness, due to the dim light I'm often using it in)

Great colour rendition and contrast. Nice Bokeh and very fast. Very shallow DOF at 1.4 so watch your focus. Makes a great walking around lens at parties, so highly recommended for wedding photogs shooting small groups.

My only reservation is the price, which is a bit on the stupid side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing lens 25 Oct 2010
I desperately wanted a 50mm lens as I love this focal length but having tried Canon's main offerings (the 1.2 and 1.4) I was bitterly disappointed with both. The 1.4 is too soft (wide open) for professional work and the 1.2 simply isn't worth the price tag for the small improvement over the 1.4. I may have had a bad copy but at £1K+ it's got to be flawless and I don't expect to even have to use the term 'bad copy'.

I therefore settled on the 35mm and wow am I happy I did. Razor sharp even at 1.4 and the focal length is perfect for my style of photography. And if I want 50mm (or there abouts) I just stick it on the 7D.

One of the most important lenses in my kit bag, quite simply stunning. If you shoot at this sort of focal length and need a super fast lens there is nothing better. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Solid 13 Nov 2012

I'm always pretty skeptical as to the 'performance' of lenses, especially the expensive ones; after all, it's you who has to perform to get the shot - as long as the lens isn't screwing it up, then all is well. In spite of this I have found that not only does the Canon 35mm 1.4 not get in the way, it's actually really adding to pictures in terms of colour and contrast.

The one (very common with canon primes) detraction is that it's not brilliant wide open - in this case just very good. The auto focus is lightning quick and near silent to all but casual movie recording, in which case it becomes the loudest sound in the universe. I may be exaggerating.

I really can't say this lens is lacking anything except maybe weather sealing. In the worst case, even if this lens doesn't jump out of the box, attach itself to your camera, and drag you to scenes of untold colour and composition (as lenses don't), everything you use afterwards will suddenly, seemingly, have a high standard to live up to.

A great lens at a great expense, but better to have one lens that serves without complaint, than three that hunt and struggle. Better, but not essential.

It's an investment, just like all L lenses.

Lens arrived on time but it came without a Canon pouch which was strange and overall disappointing for the money paid.
