Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

This high grade telephoto zoom lens responds to the exacting requirements of professionals and advanced amateurs, yet at a reasonable price. One artificial crystal fluorite and two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass lens elements in its optical system eliminate secondary spectrum, which is often the Achilles' heel of telephoto lenses resulting lower picture quality. These elements assure high resolution and high contrast throughout the entire zoom range. The latest optical design gives a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m and 0.21x maximum magnification. This lightweight, compact zoom lens, having the same level of optical performance as EF 70 - 200mm f/2.8L USM, assures good portability and operability. The ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and inner focusing system achieve high-speed silent autofocusing. Manual focusing, even while in AF mode, is possible thanks to full-time manual focusing mechanism. Extenders EF 1.4X and 2X can be used with this lens, and the optional Ring Tripod Mount A (W) is being marketed concurrently.

Product Description

This high performance telephoto zoom lens EF 70-200MM 1:4 L USM provides excellent performance for all general purposes. The compactness and light weight make it an excellent travel companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic lens, 28 May 2007
By Mr. S. Crook "porkycat" (North of the M25) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's incredibly sharp, edge to edge and across the zoom range with good colour and contrast and a mind boggling 4 stop IS. Lab tests I've read indicate that the performance is only very slightly worse than equivalent Canon 'L' primes, and that's quite an achievement in a zoom.

It's also much smaller lighter when compared with the f2.8L, and not that much heavier than the non IS version. I can carry it around all day, where'd I'd rather not lug the f2.8, and that's really what it's all about.

Other than the fact that it only goes to 200mm and is white I really can't think of a bad thing to say about it. I can't be the only person that would be prepared to pay a little more for a black 'L' lens...

The lens is really quite long (not much shorter than an un-zoomed 100-400L), but *doesn't* extend (or rotate) when zoomed and the zoom ring doesn't have to be turned too far to go from 70-200. You can still manually focus with AF switched on and focusing is as quick and quiet as you'd expect from an 'L' series lens, so it copes really well with moving targets.

If you have the money, can settle for 200mm top focal length, want to take a lens out and about and don't mind white, it's almost a no-brainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp as sharp can be, 25 Mar 2007
By brainleek007 (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I will write 2 reviews here.

Review 1: Buy this lens.

Review 2: This lens is my first L and I decided upon it after reading a lot of reviews on the web. I have to concur with everything I read which basically says this lens is the dogs danglies.

On a crop sensor you will get a focal length range of 112 to 320mm. So it's usable for portrait work at the bottom end no problem and has a hefty 320mm reach at the tele end.

The lens has IS which comes in two modes. The IS kicks in when you press the shutter release half way and makes hardly any noise. Mode 1 will attempt to correct vertical and horizontal hand shake and mode 2 is specially set up to correct vertical motion only and is suited to panning shots - motorsports come to mind. It's a fantastic system. This lens makes the seemingly impossible possible such as hand held shots at full zoom at 1/80th of a second - and that's me with not much practice. If you're naturally steady handed I bet you could get ridiculously slow shutter speeds if you required them and still get sharp images. You can (and should) turn the system off for tripod shots.

The other main feature of the lens is a focus limiter switch which stops the lens attempting to focus closer than 3m if you know you're not going to need to focus that close thus speeding up AF times. AF speed is very very quick - just press the shutter release half way down and all things being equal the focus simply snaps to in an instant.

The build of lens is outstanding. It just feels solid and the focus and zoom rings are smooth and easy.

The lens is internal focusing and zooming so it doesn't change length but it is long already and with the hood it's a bit of a handful. You won't go unnoticed with this lens that's for sure.

Image quality is frankly awesome. Coupled with the IS and good reach the lens makes shots possible that otherwise you couldn't get. Colours are so vivid with this lens and the bokeh is silky smooth. As far as I can see and most other web reviews attest to, there is seemingly no drop in quality at any focal length regardless of aperture setting. The shot WILL be pin sharp from centre to corner at any aperture/focal length combination (save ridiculously small apertures). Use it wide open with total confidence that the corners will be sharper than most lenses are in the centre. How many lenses can you say that about?

The price is a bit salty to say the least. I didn't pay anything like the Amazon price (who to be fair are very reasonable) but then again I didn't buy it in rip-off Britain!! If you do go for it you won't be dissapointed and you'll wonder how you did without IS.

Anyone even half way serious about their photography should have one of these. It's probably better than any fixed focal in the same range.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Value for money, 2 Dec 2007
By Mark John Holloway "mark_from_thailand" (Bangkok, Thailand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was my first 'L' lens & got me completely hooked on the better image quality.

It is light, so sits comfortably on the camera for football matches & can be hand-held comfortably.

f/4 means it can't be used indoors but is great for photoing the kid's football or the dogs outside.

If money is short, you want quality & don't need the f/2.8 or the IS - then this is the lens for you!
