Perfect for the job. I use it for the same reason on my 550D and 7D. It's a great lens.

I have an old Canon 430 and the lens fitted perfectly. I don't know about the 500D but I assume it will fit. Now I hardly use anything else as it is so versatile, covering almost all needs until I need my 100-400mm zoom for close-ups of wildlife etc.

It must be faulty and if you have only had it 2 months, you should be able to return it.

It should fit both the T3 and the T3i. Check on the front of your camera, by the side of your lens, there should be a symbol, a small white square. If it's there, the lens will fit. If the symbol is a red round dot, it won't. These are the two different lens standards for Canon.

now that is a serious photography question and one which I'm not experienced enough to answer. My lens is still on auto which suits me just fine. I would suggest you contact Canon direct for a safe answer.
