5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, amazing camera!, 24 Oct 2005

I bought this camera about 2 weeks ago and i have not put it down since! It's small, light weight sexy little thing and even when using the digital zoom produces high quality pictures.

I spent a lot of time researching which camera to buy and I am so pleased I went for the canon, it has a huge screen on the back which allows for instant and good quality playback but if you are interested in saving battery you can turn it off. The battery that comes with the camera is rechargable which i find a big plus as it keeps the camera light weight. The camera itself is the size of a credit card (but thicker) so it really is small and when shooting at night it has a grainy image on the screen so you can see where you are aiming.

One thing I would recommend is to order a case with the camera as it does not come with one.

If style, ease of use and high quality are things that are most important to you then I would definatly recommend this camera. I am throughly pleased with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ixus 55 - too good to be true, 4 Nov 2005

I've lusted after an Ixus for a couple of years, and negotiated with my wife to get an Ixus 50 for my birthday only to find the Ixus 55 is the new kid on the block, so got this instead. Usual excellent service & delivery from Amazon. Only had it 3 days, so limited use but first impressions are:
The camera itself is absolutely stunning in terms of quality and engineering - Canon really know how to make cameras. It's tiny but perfectly formed. The LCD is HUGE taking up 80% of the rear of the unit. All controls are intuitive as on all Canon's. In fact the manual only runs to about a couple of pages of a very small notepad. Start up time is very quick. Movie mode is magic, exceptional quality though obviously only useful for short clips. No comments on battery life yet. I'm not overly impressed by the ability to download "themes" and "sounds" for it - it's a camera after all not a phone, but maybe that's because I'm a cynical 46 year old!
My only slight reservations which stop an immediate 5 stars are:
The switch for mode (still/movie/review) looks a little less robust than the rest of the camera and the battery/mem card compartment cover looks a little delicate, but hey, these are minor niggles from first impressions. I LOVE this camera, and so would you. Goodbye Coolpix, hello Ixus.....

4.0 out of 5 stars IXUS 55 6 months down the line..., 15 Aug 2006

This review is from: Canon Digital IXUS 55 Digital Camera [5MP, 3 x Optical Zoom] (Electronics)
I was very pleased with the camera upon purchase but I thought it would be useful to give you guys an idea of how well it performs after 6 months use.

1. The camera starts to look very tatty very quickly picking up scratches to the metal - esk casing and buttons/switches loosing their coating all together. This is wear and tear even with using the case, which I bought separateley (the proper cannon case) which also turns this small nifty camera into a bulky item.

2.Switching betwwen camera/movie/view mode is now very difficult to do as the switch for this is now sticking on movie. very annoying.

3. only really produces good pictures on standard view. Try zooming and this camera has had it even on the optical zoom, but trying to digitally zoom is pointless - your pictures will not come out how you may have expected.

4.has started making a weird clunking noise when turning off and retracting the zoom lens.

5.does not perform well on night shots.

I wish I had read somthing like this before buying, it may have convinced me to go for a slighlty more expensive camera. Do not buy it thinking it is pro - ish just because it's a Cannon, it's nowhere near that, it is a fun, cheap camera that's great for taking shots on the spur of the moment and capturing some great memories reasonably well.
