Get more into your photos
Enjoy great group shots and landscapes with a greater sense of space thanks to the Digital IXUS wide angle 28mm lens. With a wide-angle lens you capture a much wider field of view and have the power to create photos that really catch the eye of the viewer. It can give you a much stronger depth of field – so you can make a feature of both foreground and background and exaggerate perspective for a truly three-dimensional sense of depth. The wide-angle lens is also excellent for adding impact to a foreground subject.

Intelligent by design for the perfect image
Setting the Digital IXUS 120 IS to Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions then selects the perfect settings from 22 specially defined scenes. So whether you’re photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you’re getting the perfect image.

With moving subjects - Auto Focus is in constant operation so you never have to miss a shot. For close ups the camera automatically switches to macro mode for sharp shots and, no matter what the setting may be, optimum exposure and flash controls ensure your subject is perfectly lit and dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Flawless detection technology
Evolved Face Detection and Motion Detection technology finds and tracks moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and additional Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mis-timed people shots by displaying an alert if a person in the frame has their eyes closed. A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started – it then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture. Auto Red-Eye detection completes the detection technology collection to ensure flawless photos every time.

Shoot with confidence
Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence right from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed, the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour – adding up to a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results. Canon’s market-leading Optical Image Stabiliser is a lens-shift system that automatically detects and corrects camera shake, whilst ensuring outstanding image quality. It allows handheld shooting at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without blur, giving you steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. Developed initially for Canon’s EOS Digital SLR cameras in 1987 it is the fastest in-lens image stabiliser available on the market and ensures the stylish Digital IXUS range has a top quality pedigree.

The 4x optical zoom lets you get up close and personal, whether you are shooting landscapes or a child’s smile, the straight optical paths deliver razor-sharp precision with lifelike colour every time.

Meanwhile a resolution of 12.1 Megapixels allows you to capture every scene in rich detail, ensuring oversize prints – even of cropped pictures - retain high image quality.

Fast, intelligent processing even in tricky lighting conditions
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds. It also makes possible the camera’s intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection technologies and Canon’s i-Contrast feature. This offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions.

Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the gain in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the noise reduction function of DIGIC 4 ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

I have had both the Ixus 100 IS and 120 IS and here are my findings to help anyone who is undecided on which model to purchase..

- The 100 is noticeably lighter and a few mm slimmer.
- The 100's lens is flush with the body and in my opinion looks better.
- The 120's max video recording length is capped at just 10 minutes where the 100 will record for 30 minutes continuous.
- Even though the viewfinder was very small on the 100, it was still useful as you could turn off the LCD while shooting to save battery.
- The 100's screen looks sharper /better as it has a smaller 2.5" LCD with the same amount of pixels as the 120's larger 2.7" LCD.
- The menu system is less cluttered looking on the 100 as there is no User Guidance info. I also prefer the colour scheme on the 100.
- The 120 costs £80 more than the 100.

The 120 is a superb camera and in all fairness I do prefer the 28mm wide angled lens with better zoom as apposed to the 33mm lens of the 100.

Just like the 100, the operation of the camera is ultra fast /starts-up instantly, takes great pictures and is superb in low light conditions for an ultra-compact camera. I do recommend that you stay away from Auto mode and get familiar with Program mode as this produces much better results when you know what you are doing.

However based on the above I have returned the 120 and will be purchasing the 100 again. The wider angle /better zoom was not worth the extra £80 and if money was not an issue then I would still picked the 100 over the 120 based on the above.

The main killer for me was the 10-minute video recording limitation, which I believe is due to some stupid camcorder import tax law. I also preferred the looks, weight and size of the 100 and will put the £80 difference towards an entry level Canon DSLR to compliment the 100.

Having compared this with at least 5 other cameras I've tested myself over the past few months I chose this as it has the best overall package without sacrificing quality. I wasn't too keen to the IXUS 100 as it wasn't wide angled and the zoom was only 3x. Then this comes out which ticks both boxes!

Overall this camera produces good quality pictures - but you have to select the right setting...using Auto mode the camera chooses high ISO settings and the resulting pictures are noisy and lack clarity. I almost sent the camera back as I didn't want the hassle of using the Program mode and selecting the ISO and exposure for each picture. BUT I then found that the best mode to use is the Program "P" mode and select the Auto ISO option and the camera then selects a lower ISO making the pictures more detailed and less noisy...they're actually very good quality and I'm very happy at this setting! It is just like an auto mode, I don't need to alter any settings before taking th picture - just point and shoot!

The video mode is also good. However don't expect it to be as good as a HD camcorder, but for a compact its good enough to use.

The camera is small, light and looks cool. Its feels solid (the only part that doesn't is the battery cover). The screen is large at 2.7" and nice and clear. So overall I feel its a great package

I bought this camera ahead of a four month trip across Asia and I wanted something easy to carry, great battery life and very durable. So far I've been absolutely delighted with this camera and in comparison to the many travellers I have met along the way, this device takes far better pictures.

The camera has stood up to a severe beating in four months as I never carry it in its case as I find it slows down my chances of taking that perfect shot. As a result there's a few scratches from keys and coins but it still performs amazingly well.

Battery life is beyond belief - typical 3-5 days with heavy usage. I prefer to use this camera in 'P' mode, not Auto as you can change all the settings as per a typical SLR. Some of the shooting functions like Macro for ultra-close-up shots and Fireworks for long exposure/no light settings are very effective and I had great fun experimenting with them. I twinned my camera with a 16GB SDHC card and got 4500 shots at 12.2 megapixels.

This camera has been roughed up, dropped, abused etc but still takes amazing shots for something so compact. User interface is simple and I'd encourage experimenting with the Program function to get the best possible shots. Try turning the flash off for darker/indoor shots as it sometimes looks much better...

A great purchase, and I'm very very happy. If I lost it tomorrow I'd buy another one without hesitation.

Having had my original Ixus 80 lifted from my desk during a buglary I was, of course, forced to replace it with an upgraded model. My previous Ixus had given me many years of happy snapping with compete reliability and excellent results. I have an SLR and a DSLR but this is the camera that goes most places with me. I was a bit nervous about giving up the optical viewfinder but in reality I can, maybe, remember using it once. So, the large screen is great and the minutely larger overall dimentions are well worth the usefully extended telephoto and wide angle abilities. I expect many years of real pleasure from using this sleek, new camera.
