This is a very good budget camera. It takes very good photos under a wide range of conditions in the standard point & shoot automatic mode. Battery life is is good being ~150 shots using alkaline batteries (slightly less if you use flash a lot) or over 300 on NiMH rechargeables.
Good points:
* 3.3x zoom works well
* Good picture quality
* Very easy to use
* Quick to start up
* Pocket sized
* Takes AA batteries
* Can take videos
Bad points:
* No optical viewfinder
* Flash is slow to recharge
* Limited manual over-ride options
* Video sound is not great
Summary:
A very competent budget camera that will take very good pictures in a wide range of conditions. Very simple to use and suitable for children / novice users.

Hello guys. i bough this camera very cheap in ebay.i own also kodak z1012,canon ixus 310 (new model) and the canon A490 .if you find this camera in a price under 60 euro buy it.i compare these 3 cameras and take a lot of photos and in all photos the canon 490 was near the other 2 cameras.Is not very good in low light condition but if you need it for outside use is taking great photos.You can read my comparison for the 3 cameras i own in amazon.uk in ixus 310 reviews.
The camera is very easy to use.it takes 2 AA batteries.the life of the batteries is good -average.the screens is good the video is good.is light camera and it takes perfect photos.If you need a small camera that takes perfect photos go for it.you can take club party cafe and anywhere.A lot of peoples pay more to just to buy a camera with manual settings etc or but in auto mode with less quality picture than this canon.i own a lot of cameras and this is one of the best if you consider the price.I bought also the ixus 310.is a camera that cost 250-300 euro.is one of the newer canon cameras.But after the comparison the outside images..(shops,trees cafes,garden in daytime)in some cases a490 had better image.but in low light ixus was excelend and canon was just average.but who cares so much about indoor?if there is low light you can use the manual settings of the camera(very easy)or you can use flash...5 stars for me guys ..if you have comments i will like to hear thank you

I bought this camera just a short while ago and with just occassional, mostly indoor use, it has already broken and is completely nonfunctional.
I will now have to search for my receipt to see whether I have any chance of a refund.
A real pain and I'm surprised at Canon for making such a garbage camera.
I suggest choosing another camera.
