With the new EOS 60D creativity has never been simpler. You can add your own artistic touches and post-production effects with ease, without worrying about detailed settings or additional software. Basic + allows you to add stunning ambience to a scene after it’s been shot – to allow you to inject warmth to a sunset or brighten up your beach shots. Simply select Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sport, or Night Snapshot modes to find the ambience to suit your scene.

For a truly unique take on photos or themed collections, take advantage of the camera’s brand new range of Creative Filters for artistic post-production effects. They’re all applied in-camera so there’s no need to worry about changing lenses. The EOS 60D even allows you to select the best aspect ratio for your subject before shooting, meaning you spend less time post-processing and more time enjoying your beautiful shots. Choose from ratios of 1:1, 16:9 and 4:3 in addition to the standard 3:2.

Advanced flexibility from an industry-leading Vari-angle LCD

The EOS 60D’s 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle monitor not only flips 175° and rotates 270° - it also has an incredible 1,040k dot resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio, offering incredible flexibility of shooting without compromising on quality. So whether you’re shooting across a crowd or from ground-level, you’ll capture the scene perfectly every time. Plus, the EOS 60D’s anti-reflective, water-repellent coating makes for easy viewing in bright light and from a variety of angles.

With Live View it's easy to magnify any part of your scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus and you can even choose a grid overlay - perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight.

Live View also provides three Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, Live Mode and Face Detection Live. Quick mode uses the camera's standard AF system and is great for capturing action or for shooting in low light. Live mode is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and Face Detection Live optimises the focus based on the faces it detects in the frame, making it easy to capture fast, spontaneous portraits.

Creativity at every angle with HD movie capture

The EOS 60D offers you the freedom to go beyond stills with Full HD (1080p) movie capture. With manual control to adjust exposure and focus, selectable frame rates, and 7x zoom Movie Crop, you can shoot stunning and creative high quality movie footage in addition to images. And what's more, there's no need to choose: you can capture both at the same time.

The camera has a built-in mono microphone with wind cut filter and a stereo mini-jack for an external microphone, enabling you to adjust sound recording level and ensure the audio matches the visual quality of the video. Plus, it’s easy to view and share your movies and stills thanks to an HDMI connection, which allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.

Superior In-Camera RAW processing

Superior In-Camera RAW processing
Rate your images for instant recognition by most third party software

With the EOS 60D, PC post-processing is no longer limited to the PC. The camera’s powerful DIGIC 4 processor supports a host of advanced features, allowing you to process your images in-camera. So if you’re stuck for time on a shoot, you can easily adjust your photos during your journey home and send them straight to print, web or email as soon as you walk through the door. And because the EOS 60D saves your RAW files, you can edit a range of original settings such as brightness, contrast, white balance or distortion, then save them in a PC-friendly format.

You can also resize your images in-camera and rate them from 1 to 5, so that once transferred to PC your favourite shots will be recognised and prioritised by most third party software, including Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.

iFCL Metering
Image without and with iFCL Metering. Colours are clearer and more accurate

Complete accuracy with cross-type autofocus and iFCL Metering

The EOS 60D’s 9-point, all cross-type autofocus (AF) system provides swift and accurate focusing, making shooting fast-moving subjects even easier. It has an extra-sensitive centre point for lenses faster than f/2.8, allowing you to artistically employ a shallow depth of field for close-up shots such as portraits or more atmospheric scenes.

To complement the 9-point AF system, the EOS 60D also features Canon’s 63 zone Dual-layer light Metering sensor – which was first introduced with the award-winning EOS 7D. By taking into account the colour and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations, with no need for manual adjustment of settings.

The metering sensor’s colour measurement function minimises exposure and focus errors caused by different light sources, meaning the EOS 60D ensures stable exposure in situations where light can change, such as a theatre or concert hall. In scenes with extreme difference in brightness the camera also balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and ensures that exposure is not overly influenced by bright areas in the frame.

Powerful resolution and performance

The 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor promises superb quality images with impressive levels of detail, enabling you to scale your images to a magnification of 1.6x the focal length of the lens. Which gives you the freedom to creatively crop your shots or capture poster-size images in a variety of aspect ratios. Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 technology processes image information rapidly, providing outstanding colour reproduction and impressive continuous shooting speeds of 5.3fps in bursts of 58 full-resolution JPEGs. Plus, the camera’s ISO range of 100-6400 is extendable to 12800, producing remarkably clear images with advanced noise control, even in low light conditions.

Multi Control Dial
The ESO 60D’s new design features one Multi Control Dial and dial lock

Highly intelligent design

The EOS 60D boasts a completely redesigned body, cleverly devised to enhance your shooting experience. It features an ergonomically enhanced, curved shape with a new button layout to make it quick and comfortable to change and customise your settings. And while the body is smaller than its predecessors, the grip size remains the same – giving you complete control at all times.

Quick Control Dial and Multi-controller have been cleverly merged into one Multi Control Dial, so you operate the multi controller even whilst using a battery grip. Many buttons are also now single function to make selection simpler. Plus, to make shooting even easier, a horizontal Electronic Level can be displayed in the viewfinder to help you capture landscapes with a perfectly level horizon.

The most frequently used controls are grouped together for easy access, and a dedicated Quick Control access button enables you to reach the most common settings instantly. Plus, the EOS 60D features the return of a reliable feature - the mode dial lock button.

SDXC and Eye-Fi card support

The EOS 60D incorporates dedicated support functions for SDXC memory cards as well as Eye-Fi cards. SDXC cards are for high capacity storage of up to 2TB while Eye-Fi are the first memory cards with their own Wi-Fi transmitter that allow you to effortlessly transfer pictures or videos directly from the camera to online sharing sites via the Eye-Fi server without the need for a PC. You can also send movies wirelessly to your own PC and customize not just where your pictures and movies are sent but also how you want them organised.

A world of advantages from Canon technology

18MP CMOS Sensor & Dual DIGIC 4 Processors
The EOS 60D's 18MP CMOS Sensor & Dual DIGIC 4 Processors combine to give exceptional performance

In-built genius

The CMOS sensor lies at the heart of the EOS system. Indeed, Canon is the only camera manufacturer to produce their own sensor and years of imaging experience are borne out by the results - a range of sensors designed to perfectly match the performance requirements of each specific EOS model and superb clean detailed images with minimum noise.

The CMOS sensor's larger pixel sizes mean wider dynamic range for greater contrast and detail in shadow and highlight areas and a low-pass filter in front of the sensor suppresses the false colour and more that can affect high resolution digital photography.

It is extremely powerful and efficient so not only does it improve battery life giving you more shots per charge, but it also enables fast transfer of data to the processor allowing you to keep shooting continuously.

Power in your hands

Canon's latest generation of DIGIC processor, the DIGIC 4, is the brain of the camera and is responsible for the superb responsiveness of all EOS models. Faster and more powerful than its predecessor, the DIGIC 4 processor gives exceptional performance and low noise at higher ISO speeds.

In the instant between your shot being taken and its appearance on the LCD screen, Canon's cutting-edge DIGIC technology, which was originally developed for Canon's Professional range, is racing to optimise your image.

DIGIC processors are able to analyse ultra-detailed image data gathered by the camera sensor then use this to swiftly reproduce the subtlest of tonal graduations and an exceptionally wide colour range.

When shooting in darker conditions, even if you are pushing the ISO to the limit, DIGIC processing applies sophisticated Noise Reduction algorithms - helping to eliminate graininess and preserve detail. The speed of DIGIC also means less processing time for long battery life and fast start-up times.

EF & EF-S Lenses

Over 60 years of experience give Canon an inherent advantage when it comes to lens manufacture. EOS digital SLRs are backed up by the world's most comprehensive system of interchangeable lenses. From 15mm ultra wide angle to 800mm super telephoto, the 60+ lenses in the EF series cover all possible shooting requirements.

Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L Series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabiliser technology is featured in selected lenses to minimise the effect of camera shake.

Extend your lighting capabilities

Canon's extensive range of Speedlites can make it simple to get great results with your flash photography and can be used on or off camera to open up a range of creative possibilities. The Speedlite range is compatible with all EOS cameras and includes a choice of three standard models and two models for specialist macro use.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The self cleaning unit combats dust using ultrasonic vibrations
Click here for a larger image

The EOS 60D has an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter making it easier than ever to make the most of them.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

This is not a stand-alone feature but a built-in system to minimise the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images - particularly appreciated by those photographers who need to change lenses frequently and in dusty environments.

Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit - A key element of minimising dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this EOS cameras feature a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. A collar positioned around the sensor then collects the loosened dust. In addition to this a special coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter actually causes it to repel dust.

Dust Delete Data Detection - Any dust that still remains on the front of the sensor can be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analysed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mid-range DSLR 29 Dec 2010
By Lumpster VINE™ VOICE
Style Name:Body Only
OK, I had a Canon EOS 400D that had served me well for nearly 3 years (and I had a 300D before that) and was looking to upgrade it, but I couldn't decide between a 550D or a much more expensive 7D. Then the 60D was launched and from the reviews I read, it filled the gap perfectly between the two. As ever, launch pricing was really toppy at over £1k but I took the plunge just before Christmas 2010 and bought the 60D (with the 18-55 IS kit lens) for a great price of £799.

It's still fairly early days but so far, so good. The camera is a dream to use, images are razor sharp. Handling is easier than the lower spec DSLRs in Canon's range due to the fact that the 60D is a slightly bigger, bulkier machine but without this being a negative. If you are familiar with a Canon DSLR, all of the controls and features are logical and easy to use without having to trawl through the manual. The tiltable screen is a work of genius, especially the fact that you can store the screen facing into the camera for even more protection when not in use. You can also tilt the screen and take shots based on the screen view if, for example, you are taking shots with the camera held above your head to get a clear view.

I primarily use my old 28-135mm IS USM Canon lens and image quality is fantastic. I have also bought a Canon 70-300mm IS USM zoom and again it seems to produce great results. I am using Class 10 SDHC cards (whereas my previous 2 Canon DSLRs used Compact Flash) and the speed is lightning fast - I have bought a couple of the Transcend ones from Amazon and they seem to do a remarkably good job for a lot less money than the competition. Only time will tell if they prove to be reliable...

The only downside is that my camera was supplied with an old version of firmware installed (v5), which needed updating (to v8) to cure a quirk with over-exposure when using certain lensses (and the two lenses mentioned above were included in this list). I went through the whole firmware update process in a mild panic but it was a remarkably pain-free experience.

Overall, the 60D is a great mid-range camera and a worthy upgrade from my 400D. The 60D strikes the perfect balance for me in that it offers more functionality / flexibility than the 550D but without the complexity of the more advanced 7D. I am fairly loyal to Canon gear but I did look around at the Nikon equivalents before making my purchase - however, I ruled out Nikon as you just seem to get more for your money with Canon. Also worth saying that the lens/flashgun I already had are compatible with the 60D. The next step for me is properly testing out the camera's HD video capability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon EOS 60D 21 Jan 2011
By Golfal
Style Name:Body Only
I had my trusty EOS 300D for five years and although it never let me down I was itching to upgrade.

I looked at and handled both the 7D and 60D but was undecided until the price difference made up my mind.
I opted for the 60D and can honestly say I have no regrets. The images I get from my 17-85 IS and my 70-300 IS are amazing.

Shoot in RAW and process in seconds with the camera,a great boon when out in the field.

The menu might look a bit much at first glance but with time all becomes clear.

Before I sign off,the video shooting is also top class, all in all a great bit of gear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning piece of kit 25 April 2011
Style Name:Body Only
After 5 or 6 years with my Canon 350D I thought the time was right for upgrading.

I compared the 60D to the 7D and decided that I didn't need the additional capabilities of the 7D (more frames per second, magnesium alloy body, etc)

After a couple of months use I am happy I made the right choice.

The quality of picture that comes out if the camera is so much better than the 350D.

I get more post shoot crop ability due to the higher number of megapixels.

The noise handling is SO much better (one of my main requirements as I don't have super fast lenses)

Quite simply, stunning piece of kit.
