I bought this product because after doing an interview with the Canon HF200 using the built-in microphone, it became very obvious that the standard mic is just... pants.

I was nearly put off by the negative reviews which talk about the build quality (n.b. not just on Amazon!). Okay, so the docking foot is plastic and easily broken: this is true. Canon could have easily given the DM-100 a metal foot like the Speedlite 580EX II. But they didn't, and you just have to treat the product accordingly... extra care needs to be taken when docking, un-docking, and storing. Extra care should also be taken not to lift the camera by the microphone, or to pull the mic off the camera by the main body, as either of these could damage the docking foot, the shoe itself, or the shock absorbing collar on the microphone's stalk.

The sound quality is simply in a different league to the built-in mic. Using the shotgun mode, noise from the periphery of the shot is cut down dramatically, and the sound from the subject is richer and less tinny. Operator noises are also negligible. The 90 and 120 degree modes actually do give a noticeably different experience (I was cynically expecting them to be indistinguishable from each other), and the wind sock DOES make a huge difference.
Be advised that the frequency range of this mic is ONLY 100-10,000Hz. If you need to record frequencies outside that range, consider another model!

One reviewer stated that the wind sock was useless; this has NOT been my experience so I can only assume s/he was in very high wind that exceeded the ability of the wind sock to mitigate the noise. The wind sock has limitations because it obviously has to let SOME sound through, so it will not top ALL air movement toward the mic.

I've used this for over three months now and the sound quality is an improvement over using the built-in microphone. The "hairy" wind protector is useful but does attract attention when you are recording. Expensive but worth it.

I've given this Microphone 1 star as I had to give it a rating star...I would like to have given it -5 as it is useless.
I've Had this microphone a few weeks now and as no Instruction manual was supplied I have had to work out how to use it by experimenting with the different settings..The wind shield in my opinion is totally useless, wind noise is apparent on all the settings..this microphone is a waste of money and I'd advise people to look elsewhere at different Microphone's..
I'd also like to warn people that if you do buy this microphone then DO NOT BUY FROM ..."SHOP UK" HERE ON AMAZON..
I had to contact them after 2 weeks to ask when would the Microphone be delivered to me..It was about 10 days after that that I received the Microphone..No Instruction manual was supplied..when I contacted them they Ignored my Emails,it was after more Emails from me telling them I would leave them negative feedback that they basically laughed at my requesting an Instruction Manual and told me to take it up with Amazon...I have never dealt with anybody as unprofessional as these people...
I sent them another Email asking them politely to please get me an Instruction manual..that was about 1 week ago and they have again Ignored me.
I have had enough and have left them a negative feedback on their Site and this is a sarcastic message I've just received from them (Sun 27th July 08)

"We would like to thank you very much for your wonderful feedback. We hope you enjoy your product as we enjoyed Shipping it to you.

Best Regards
Shop Uk Ltd "

These Shop UK people are a disgrace to Amazon..you have been warned...stay away from them..they take your money and leave you high and dry.

I thought that this is a fine accessory for my Vixia HF200 camcorder - until I accidentally dropped it within a week of receiving it. Both side edges of the plastic foot broke away and the microphone / camera interface no longer worked. Fair enough, I thought, my fault, but Canon will be able to repair it. No such luck! Canon (UK) RCC returned it to me with a note saying "This item is a non serviceable unit and hence will be returned unrepaired." At least they had the decency not to charge me for the return postage, but I think that it is utterly reprehensible that the company can't or won't repair this product, despite it retailing at prices between £142 and £200. Especially as Canon make it as difficult as possible to use (much cheaper) third party accessories with their video cameras. So, be warned, if you do buy one of these microphones, handle it with extreme care.

05/02/2010 After reading the comments in another review of this product, I'd just like to reiterate that I am not blaming Canon for the fact that I broke my microphone by dropping it. As I stated above, that's wholly my fault. What does annoy me intensely though is that Canon cannot be bothered to offer a repair sevice for a rather expensive item that has some very fragile parts.

I know the finacial bullet is a tough one to bite; this is not a cheap purchase but it does a very good job of attenuating unwanted noise away from the foreground.

I would say that though it is not fragile, it is not the toughest grade of plastic mike I have and does benefit from not being bald ( ie KEEP THE HAIRPIECE ON ) in that the wind sock attenuator acts as a protection for the mike.

Why Only Three Stars? The price really prevents getting a 4 Star rating. The construction Quality is not upto the price at all.

Pricey, its 'ok' but I had expected higher construction quality at this price...Canon- you're slipping!

IN A NUTSHELL... HOBSON'S CHOICE, Should be gold plated at this price but its not.
