Light weight, but no lightweight,

Having used many large flatbed scanners over the years I was not expecting much. I only purchased this scanner because it was physically small and did not require an extra power supply, making it suitable for travelling. In the end I was amazed by how much above its weight this little bantam punches! For an A4 scanner it is tiny and extremely light. It actually lives comfortably in a side pouch within my laptop bag - it is smaller than the laptop itself. The lack of power supply is pure plus - no extra weight to lug about. The laptop supplies everything, and yet the scanner is still very fast (and quiet!). Drain on the laptop battery is surprisingly low as it only draws power when actually scanning.Results are not as good as you would get from a professional machine, but more than acceptable for most uses. The only difficulties I have had come about from the sheer complexity of the available options for scanning. It takes a while to get used to the ScanGear software, and a lot of trial and error can be involved if you scan colour originals of varying quality - it does however remember settings so consistent sources will be easier to handle. The supplied vertical stand is a bit of a gimmick - it holds the scanner on its side at a slight angle, but is not very stable and you can only use single sheets or photos as anything thicker drops out easily. Otherwise the A4 footprint is still tiny. On a train I have sat with the scanner on my knees, the laptop sitting on top of it. It didn't miss a pixel! I love this scanner, and even if I get a higher resolution desktop model I will keep this for going on the road. A sound investment.
