Manufacturer's Description

There are four ways to shoot close-up and macro photography: use a Macro lens, an extension tube, a close-up lens attachment and a bellows. Of course, most zoom lenses allow close-focusing capability but the magnifications will not be as great as those four ways mentioned. For EOS users, Canon offers choices of three EF Macros, two extension tubes, Close-up Attachment lenses and the equivalent of a bellows in the form of the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 5X Macro Photo lens. Close-up Attachment lenses are like filters where they can be fitted onto the front of the Canon FD or EF lenses used. They are available in three types of 250D, 500 and 500D.

Having considered the options of a macro lens, close up lens or extension tubes I chose the Canon 500D close up lens. This was based on cost and the ability to quickly fit it to a 100-400 Canon lens. Initial results show extremely good clarity with close up shots and a reasonable depth of field. If you do not want to invest in a macro lens I would recommend this as a cheaper alternative. The supply of the lens by Amazon was quick and at the time they were the cheapest supplier I could find.

As the previous reviewer states, this makes a nice alternative to a cheap macro lens in that its smaller and therefore more likely to be in your kit bag. Focussing can be tricky as the depth of field is very shallow so a tripod (and even focussing rail) are highly recommended. I preferred this to macro tubes as its less bukly then a set of tubes.

I bought this from Amazon a few months back. It is far quicker to put on than changing to a macro lens and cheaper than a decent one and of course less kit in an overfilled bag.

However its no good pretending you don't get huge DOF problems as in real macro and for best results on very small objects eg v.small wildflowers, best used with a tripod, can be a mini. I use it on Nikon 80-400VR, an old lens which needs switching to over-ride auto-focus with manual; would be better still on lens not needing that.Focus distance around 500mm. On larger/moving things, eg butterflies, pretty good hand held. On normal size flowers, better to use a closer focus normal lens (in my case 18-135) with smaller min focus distance
