Product Description

From the Back Cover

Canon's new EOS 50D bridges the gap between the novice and the seasoned pro with a perfect combination of high-speed and quality. For anyone who has upgraded from their point-and-shoot or first DSLR to a Canon 50D and wants to get the best shots possible but isn't sure what to do next. There's the manual of course, as well as competing books, and while they all tell 50D owners, often in 400+ pages, what the camera can do, none of them shows them exactly how to use their camera to create great images! Canon 50D: From Snapshots to Great Shots has one goal: to teach 50D owners how to make great shots using their Canon camera. It teaches them how to use their 50D to create the type of photographs that inspired them to buy the camera in the first place. Everything in the book is in service of creating a great image. Starting with the top ten things they need to know about their camera, photographer Jeff Revell then carefully guides them through the Basic modes and into the Advanced modes of the camera. They'll get practical advice from a pro on which settings to use when, great shooting tips, and even end-of-chapter assignments that will allow 50D owners to immediately put to use all the great info in each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Canon 50d Owners!! 10 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
What a fantastic book - a must for all new owners of the Canon 50d.

Whilst the owners manual explains the buttons and settings it does not explain how to get the best out of a fantastic piece of kit.

This manual goes through the basic elements of using the camera in the first four chapters and then looks at the creative zones in order to give guidance and tips for the types of photography - landscapes, moving targets, portraits, mood lighting, etc.

It has a whole host of tips and starts with a top ten list of items to consider when taking it out of the box.

I took the book on holiday just after buying the camera and spent a lot of time reading and practicing the techniques and you can certainly get some fantastic results.

Well done to the author - Jeff Revell

I've recently retired and decided that now would be a good time to revive my keen interest in photography. Having used a Canon FTB slr film camera for many years I thought I should now move into the digital age.

I chose to purchase a Canon 50D DSLR and I have not been disapointed in my choice, but have been made aware that the camera offers such a significant potential to deliver photographs of outstanding quality, I really needed some simple straight forward advice on how I could maximize this potential to the full.

The instruction book explains the camera components and general operation, but offers nothing more. This is why I decided to purchase "Canon 50D: From Snapshots to Great Shots: Simple Steps to Great Photos" from Amazon, who offered the book at the best price.

Author Jeff Revell, really does provide what I consider to be the best approach to giving just the type of information I was looking for. He covers every possible angle from "Ten Tips To Make Your Shooting More Productive Right Out Of The Box" to every aspect of setting up your camera for all types of photography, ending each chapter with a series of assignments which reinforces your understanding of what is contained in each chapter.

I can't recomend it highly enough, it's simple and highly effective in what it offers. You can look "inside" the book if you call it up on the Amazon website, it will allow you to get a very good idea of how comprehensive the book is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon 50D Reading 29 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Great Book! Pick it up, put it down, read it all, read a bit.
Reading this book solved a few mysteries about the 50D, and left a couple more, but I am sure when I have mastered some I shall read again and master them all! I liked the bit at the end of each section where you get an assignment, that makes you go out and practise. The photos in the book appear a little dull but I'm sure that is in the printing and not the original shots. Also good is the style of writing it is competent and not to so technical you get glassy eyed.
I understand from comments on Flickr there is an issue about the bonus chapter, but as I have not looked into I find it unfair to make a comment.
Overall I good book, a good price. Would I buy it again? No, because I already have it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon 50D From Snapshots to Great Shots 26 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Photography is a hobby of mine and I bought a new EOS 50D, while the manual has everything you need, you also need to be a professional user to understand it. Enter this book. I can,t recomend this book enough to the hobbyist who owns a Canon EOS 50D. I found it invaluable as a reference and just a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but Basic 16 Feb 2010

This book is well written but if you are a keen amateur photographer who knows Canon DSLRs (as I do) then this will be a little basic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for 50D owners 20 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
Despite having owned EOS cameras for several years, I still like to get a book on the subject to see if i can improve on what I have learnt from the original manual and by self experience.
This book is great for improving on what you have learnt from the manual, it is well laid out for starters, the author not only gives you alternative ideas and ways to improve on your photography but he also tells you why it will improve your photography. Expanded guides are good, dont get me wrong, but this just goes the extra mile in respect of moving away from the conventional by experimenting with all the features of your 50D. All in all a worthy investment,

I found the book very easy to read and follow. I like the personal way the book was written and how the author recommends ways to experiment with the camera. I like the instruction manual that comes with the camera, but this book adds another dimension, by providing pictures and projects to try at the end of each chapter. Overall a good book, that I would recommend to the amateur photographer.
