Product Description

Product Description

This book covers all aspects of the open canoe, from design to wilderness travel. What really sets it apart is its focus on canoeing techniques. Ray Goodwin is the UK's best known and (many would go so far as to say) foremost canoe coach. By introducing some of the latest canoeing performance skills, based on what he has discovered through decades of coaching and guiding, he sets out to inspire a new generation of paddlers. Through clear language and the use of photographs acquired over many years of paddling around the world, he shares some real insights of the reality of canoeing; sometimes gritty, but always enthralling. Ray has paddled extensively in Europe and his British canoe trips include the Circumnavigation of Wales and the Irish Sea Crossing. In North America, he has canoed the Rio Grande in the South and done trips as far north as the Arctic Circle, as well as doing two kayak descents of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. In addition to being a British Canoe Union Level 5 Coach in Canoe, Inland Kayak, he holds a Mountain Instructor's Certificate and has led ice climbs on Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and in the Atlas Mountains. He runs his own coaching and guiding business, working at all levels from novice to the top BCU leadership and coaching qualifications courses.

This is the new bible for open canoeists. Building on, & acknowledging, the efforts of Bill Mason and the McGuffins, Ray Goodwin's book adds more modern techniques as well as more information on modern equipment and presents it in a clearly displayed way, with easily understandable & enjoyable narrative, & good photos. Aimed at all levels, from beginners to more advanced paddlers, it also touches on canoe sailing, lining, poling & the like.

The only minor criticisms I can come up with are that in a couple of pictures it wasn't immediately obvious to me (as an intermediate paddler) which way the water was flowing, & that on one or two pages the text to go with a photo sequence is on the opposite page. Sometimes pictures are numbered to solve this, but not always. Not a problem really, as the text only makes sense when you look at the right pictures!

There is a mass of information in this book, & its one I know I will continue to dip into regularly, whatever level of canoeist I may become. Very well done.

This is a fantastic book.
It is a practical, comprehensive book to all aspects of canoeing. It is well written and the use of pictures makes it really easy to follow. It is full of useful bits of advice and hints which will be of use to a beginner and experienced paddler.
I have a lot of canoe books in my collection but I know that this one will always be my first port of call when I need to remind myself how to do something or when I want to perfect a canoe stroke.
