Will challenge any canoeist ... to design and craft a paddle ... This fascinating book ... is richly illustrated.--Art Lander Jr."Lexington Herald-Leader" (04/01/2001)

Product Description

Canoeists are increasingly discovering the deep satisfaction in creating their own equipment rather than adapting to the generic standards of boats and paddles available through retailers. For the how-to beginner, a paddle represents the perfect challenge - both finite and functional. For the skilled woodworker, the opportunity to experiment with design and technique to create custom-made articles is a dream challenge. 1 Diversity: Evolution of the canoe paddle; 2 Design: Inner Workings of the canoe paddle; 3 Woods and Adhesives: A Guide to Materials; 4 Tools: Selecting your Level of Technology; 5 Paddlemaking Basics 6 Adding Power; 7 Double Blade Paddles; 8 Oil and Varnishes; 9 Care and repair; 10 Origins & Native Traditions; 11 Paddle Plans; 12 Glossary/Resources; Hand-made canoe and paddle building is a craft at an all-time high at the moment.

The physics of propelling a canoe are the same the world over, so it wouldn't be unrealistic to assume that common paddle design might therefore have evolved. Read the first page

A lovely book to own, and a good manual to guide you through the process of making canoe paddles. Provides excellent detail on some of the trickier parts of the process and includes a nice range of designs with offsets.

I also bought 'Making Canoe Paddles in Wood', Graham Warren's earlier book on the subject (direct from Graham), and while both books provide all the information needed to make a paddle from start to finish, as is so often the case with manuals, it sometimes helps to see things expalined in two different ways.

I have built two paddles now, am very happy with the results, and am planning a couple more.

This is a nice book, well written and describes paddlemaking well. You can read it from cover to cover and then dip in as your paddle project progresses. All instructions and guidance are there as are the very useful templates for shaping the paddles. As a woodworker this book meets my needs but I can also see that it would serve a novice well. I think a bandsaw is pretty essential though but I could see myself cutting out wood with a jigsaw or by hand if I didn't have one. This is a good value book and if you're thinking of paddlemaking I'd recommend this book could do it for you.

Gotinterested in canoing through the kids doing it.Many years ago made canoes and kayaks at school found it very interesting when you made and used your own.
I was fedup using club equipment wanted a paddle that was personal well balanced the correct size for me.
I bought the book spent time deciding on which one to make and made a Voyager that worked verywell. My young son (13) is now making one now to his measurements he didn't realise how easy it is to make if you take your time and work with the wood.
The hardest part is deciding which one to make first and finding the correct wood which is part of the fun.
I will be making a collection of paddles in the near future due to reading this book and having the satisfaction of using a paddle you have made yourself.
I am not very experienced at working with wood just the usual DIY and this book made it so easy.
Highly recommended if you want that bit extra out of canoing.
