They don't make them like this anymore!!, 30 Dec 2001

I first saw this film about 10 years ago and it blew me away then just as it does now. I have been searching ever since to find a copy and was told it was no longer being made. Couldnt believe it when i saw it today. Am definatly going to buy in a minute!! Its the kind of film which should have a "leave at least 2hrs before driving your vehicle" warning label on the case. Burt Reynolds plays the lead role and is very funny also other old faces like ex-rat pack Sammy-Davis-Junior and very attractive blonde and brunettes along the way. Fairly simple plot. A race across America, the winner collecting a million dollars. Loads of adventures en-route and fumbles with the law a'la speeding fines. The opening scene though has to be my personal favourite. The music is cheesily good. They definatly do not make em like that anymore!!!! I wont give anymore away. Just buy it now or lose it forever!!!!My rating got to be a high-five!!!!

Can't help liking it!, 15 Jan 2006
It is easy to forget that in the 70's Burt Reynolds was a HUGE star and the CB radio was on people's Xmas present lists. Along with Smokey and the Bandit, the Cannonball Run shows Reynolds at his entertaining, larger than life, macho best. I shouldn't like this film but I do. Silly, bawdy, un-PC but laugh out loud funny with people like Sammy Davis Jr and Roger Moore obviously having a whale of a time. It looks as if they all had great fun making this film, and it shows in the performances. My favourite characters have to be Dom Deluise as Captain Chaos, and especially, the Doctor. I can't help it, whenever he appears in the film and that music starts to play I just crack up laughing. I think of films like this as the American equivalent of Carry On films, part of you cringes at them but part of you loves them for their irreverence and their ability to encapsulate a particular time and place in our culture. If you like this film you must check out Smokey and the Bandit because Jackie Gleason is a joy as the evil Buford T Justice..

Top nostalgia tip, much funnier than I remembered, 15 Oct 2001

Superb! I was recommended this by a friend and though I had seen it as a child I didn't realise how good it was. The all-star cast put in some fine comedy performances, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr are just playing themselves but that's all you would want, Deano hadn't even bothered to sober up and is all the better for it. Roger Moore and Jackie Chan doing an excellent job of sending up their more traditional roles. Dom Deluise! I didn't even realise he was funny but he mannages to steal one or two scenes from the films star. Which brings me to good old burt, As far as comedy he has only ever came close in Smokey & the bandit. He knows just how to check into a hotel, careering into the foyer in an ambulance and leaving with the line 'if anyone needs me I'll be in the bar'... poetry. So if you have some faint memories of this from childhood I'd strongly recommend, so much better than you remember.
