Having only heard Cannonballs work with Miles on the seminal albums Milestones and Kind of Blue and his own masterpiece with Somethin' Else (Highly Recommended), I was eager to hear his later work with the Keyboard Master Joe Zawinul. And I wasn't disappointed. This is actually a compilation but the tracks are simply fantastic. The first track "74 miles away" immediately grabs the listeners attention and interest with its crisp opening chords and repetitive but powerful riff. Some of this CD is recorded "live" (at a studio but with an invited audience). Another superb track is track 4 called "Money in the pocket", I can't really say why, it's just very cool and catchy. Track 2 is a superb tribute to tenor sax god Sonny Rollins called "one for newk". However, the absolute Highlight of the Album is Zawinul's beautiful composition "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"; you can really hear the gospel influence on it. This great album even gives you a taste of Africa on track 9 called "Ndo Lima". This Album really does cover the best of the work Cannonball Adderley did with Joe Zawinul. Cannonball's wonderful, virtuosic alto playing is completely faultless on this record as his
Brother Nat's cornet playing. Don't let the fact that this CD is "Copy Controlled" (the other reviewer commented on this) put you off getting it as it is superb. If you like good Jazz then this is definitely for you. Another more recent disc I recommend you purchasing is Joe Zawinul's new disc called "Vienna Nights", you will not be disappointed by either of these.

adderley & zawinul = frantic fun 20 Feb. 2005
By William J. James - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Before there was WEATHER REPORT, Joe Zawinul made a significant contribution to jazz via his partnership with Cannonbal Adderly. Joe was the piano player in Adderly's band in the early 60's...a seemingly strange collaboration between a Southern born African American sax player and an Eastern European, classically trained pianist. But from the opening track, it works and it works to such a degree that this cd moves like a runaway train. There is, of course, Zawinul's hit MERCY, MERCY, MERCY which is atypical in the context of the other selections (but a great soulful, funky classic) but it is clear that Adderly recognized Zawinul's writing talent and gave him his due by playing his compositions exclusively on this recording. Adderly and Zawinul were on the cutting edge of jazz at the time this recording was made and their music stands not only as a foreshadow of what was to come but as a classic in its own right. The album SOUNDS like a live club date but the listener has to wonder if CAPITOL records once again made a studio recording with drinks and "friends" in attendance. It all just adds to the frantic fun these musicians appear to be having at this juncture of their celebrated careers. dr. Muse

Excellent Compilation 1 July 2006
By Richard B. Luhrs - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
CANNONBALL PLAYS ZAWINUL is just what its title suggests: an excellent and - given that most of the albums represented herein have yet to appear on CD - overdue collection of compositions by Cannonball Adderley's visionary 1960s keyboardist, who would later go on to form Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. From hits like "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and the phenomenal "74 Miles Away" to proto-world music curios like "Ndo Lima," classicist workouts and even an extensive exploration of the Herbie Hancock tribute "Dr. Honorius Causa" from 1971 (by which time Zawinul had left Cannonball's band), it's all here. A few of these tracks are available on discs like MONEY IN THE POCKET, MERCY MERCY MERCY and CANNONBALL IN JAPAN; for the most part, however, this is currently the only way to get these wonderful recordings into your collection. As such, it is - at least for the moment - essential.
Seeds of Weather Report, flowering of genuis 19 Jun. 2012
By Noel A. Hodda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Listening to these Zawinul compositions collected here and played by various permutations of Cannonball Adderley's groups (though primarily of the Victor Gaskin/Roy McCurdy era) one can hear the faint call of the Weather Report music to come (a similar experience can be had listening to Miles Davis' 'In A Silent Way', particularly the box set). On this Adderley compilation tunes like '74 Miles Away', 'Mystified' and 'Ndo Lima' hint at what was later to become a rich field for Mr. Zawinul alongside Wayne Shorter but what comes through loudest and clearest is how much Cannon enjoyed playing these tunes and making them his own. There is no doubt that this is a Cannonball Adderley album and it's wonderful to have so many of his interpretations of Joe Zawinul's compositions collected on one disc. You may have some or all of these tracks on their respective albums ('74 Miles Away'; 'Why Am I Treated So Bad'; 'Domination'; 'Cannonball In Japan'; 'Nancy Wilson-Cannonball Adderley'; 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy-Live at The Club'; 'Accent On Africa') but hearing them collected here is like hearing a new Adderley album and it is a joy to listen to.
