Synopsis

When a careless film crew goes missing in a South American jungle, a rescue team is sent in from the United States. Upon the team's arrival, a native tribe called the tree people' offer them the only remains of the crew--rolls of film documenting their search for true cannibals. The footage reveals the missing crew's shocking discovery--and their gruesome fates. Ruggero Deodato's horror classic features a surprising amount of social commentary along with its gore. In addition, its premise is considered by many to be a major influence on THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and CLOVERFIELD.

This release is highly likely to have a high number of cuts!

Cannibal Holocaust follows the misadventures of a film making crew in South America. They fall foul of the natives while attempting to produce a documentary film of their day-to-day lives. As you may have guessed, the natives are cannibals. Que the dismemberment, beheading, impaling and the gut eating. I urge caution if this is an uncut version as the violence is extremely explicit! It is NOT for the faint hearted! The uncut version also contains a number of REAL footage of animal killings and dismemberment. Even though this film contains explicit violence, the likes of which is not seen else where, it does seem to be justified within the context of the film. It is about cannibalism, so you see cannibalism in all it's horrific glory, also, animals would be killed and butchered if you were on an expedition in the jungle. I feel the content is justified but certainly very difficult to watch. The reason why this film has been awarded 5 stars by me is due to the superbe effects, the brilliant camera work (blair-witch eat your heart out), the INCREDABLY creepy music and just the whole 'in-your faceness' of it. Highly recommended to horror fanatics and those with a strong stomach! This is a land mark, pioneering film NOT to be missed. It's infamy is deserved, you can't call yourself a film buff if you haven't seen this blood soaked original!

A truely moving, disturbing and powerful film.

This is a great film in its original form and can not be fully appreciated in its expurgated version, however judiciously edited. I feel somewhat patronised watching a film where the music soundtrack (which is excellent accompanying the brutal murder sequences with harrowing effect)is broken-up at times and thoroughly disjointed indicating that whole sections of the film have been removed. To add to this (if not already obvious signpost) plot points make little sense. My point is a simple one...why shouldn't mature adults over 18 be allowed to watch this film as the director intended it to be and judge it accordingly? Surely, some scenes will distress even the hardest of people, but this is not your average Saturday night material and anyone who buys this WILL ALREADY KNOW about its content! So good film...YES, good DVD presentation...YES, a chance to own possible the most disturbing visceral AND hauntingly beautiful horror film of all time...well, sadly NO! Sorry, but another black mark for the BBFC in my book.

.....this isn't it. Ok, it's finally been released in the UK, but at what price? The movie has been slaughtered from it's original form - over 5 mins cut. The full uncut version still stands as the most disturbing film ever made and the best cannibal film ever. This, however is a poor substitute. The movie they didn't want you to see - the blurb proudly tells us - on evidence of this version they still don't.
