Biography

Move Like This, The Cars’ first album of new music in many years, is a vibrant and ingenious collection that expertly extends their already extraordinary canon. Retooling innovative art rock, sleek New Wave, and punchy power pop in their own idiosyncratic image, The Cars’groundbreaking sonic approach continues to influence artists and airwaves today. Singer/guitarist Ric Ocasek ... Read more in Amazon's The Cars Store

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Another Cars Classic' 9 Feb 2007
By Antony May TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
After their fantastic debut album this record had a lot to live up to! For me though this is very nearly as good an album as that debut. Singles 'Lets Go' and 'It's All I Can Do" are typical Cars. Quirky and catchy both are easily up to the standard of anything on the first album. 'Nightspots' is also a bona-fide classic punchy, rocky yet with that commercial edge that the Cars managed to embody in all of their best records. The other single from this album 'Double Life' was a strange choice as a single and is perhaps one of the lesser tracks on offer here but if you can resist the powerful title track you are a better man than I. If you liked the first album you will like this so BUY IT!

Candy-O would always have trouble justifying itself against the band's assured debut - how many "difficult 2nd albums" have there been, after all? But I like it - it has a lot of strong songs and a sense of personality and 'consistent whole' that the band would find hard to relocate until "Heartbeat City" in 1984. Even when the music fails to inspire, Ric Ocasek's angular, impressionistic lyrics are always a delight.

Highlights for me are "It's All I Can Do", "Double Life", the classic segue of "Shoo be Doo"/"Candy-O", the almost deliberately ironic mechanized feel of "Nightspots" and "Lust for Kicks" with its woozy synth sounding like it's had a little too much to drink. Lyrically "Got A Lot On My Head" is pretty much any young man's status report and the band deliver a frenetic backing to Ocasek's typically concise lyric.

I agree with the other reviewer's comments about Roy Thomas Baker's production on this album being less open than "The Cars" from the preceding year. There's a massive amount of midrange energy in David Robinson's snare drum that tends to clobber the listener over the head and rather hides the genius in the songs. Interestingly enough, RTB would change his studio approach for the band's next album, "Panorama", which sounds a lot less claustrophobic. This CD, badged as "US import" by Amazon, was mastered by Joe Gastwirt in 1999 for HDCD and is pretty faithful to the original master tape (as much as any of us can tell). It is manufactured in the U.S.A. by Warners. For UK listeners, it's a big improvement on the Strawberry-mastered vinyl that Elektra released here in 1979 and has a lot less dynamic range compression than, say, the Steve Hall 1997 remaster of "It's All I Can Do" for The Wedding Singer film soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mark II 22 April 2009

'Candy-O' was a critical flop on its release in 1979, due mainly to being an inferior imitation of The Cars' superb debut album. It didn't stop the band's commercial progress in the US, however, even though it made little impact in the UK. It's most glaring weakness is the lack of a killer track, although the epic closer, 'Dangerous Type', comes close. The title track and 'Got A Lot On My Head' are good rockers, while 'Since I Held You' and 'It's All I Can Do' are the best pop items. The slightly reserved 'Double Life' is also a highlight. The worst track is 'Let's Go', not only the first track, but also the first single from the album. This is one of the most tepid and uninspired recordings they've made. Moreover, although Roy Thomas Baker again produced the album, the sound lacks the appealing vastness of the first album. A good album, nearer three stars than five, but worth investigating if you're a fan of the debut.
