4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, awful grammatical mistakes 19 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm giving the book a 4 star because I genuinely enjoyed reading this book and you can't argue with the price. I found the storyline really interesting and I couldn't put it down, even though it was a little predictable at times. What detracted from leisurely reading was the awful jarring and poor grammatical errors in the book. I read the book on my kindle and the first error popped up 5% into the book. Sack the proof-reader (if there was one)!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, hope there is a sequel 22 Aug 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
This is now available as a book, I've just read it (very quickly because I couldn't put it down either!) The characters were very likeable and the descriptive writing was excellent, I could just imagine what they would look like, along with very clear images of the location. This has made me long to go to Italy even more than I did before reading it! I can't believe that this is Katie's first book and I sincerely hope there will be many more to come because I just didn't want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Escapism 24 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A beautifully descriptive, emotionally engaging 1st novel from this very talented new author. Anna's journey will touch everyone who reads it, many people will relate to it and it will certainly stay with you long after the last page has been consumed. I simply couldn't put it down and finished it in several days, having been lucky enough to read it in paperback. San Lavello is brought to life with a detailed romanticism. It is absolutely one to recommend to all your friends. This exceptional author is one to watch out for in the future, please please write more Katie. Diggin it Katie!!

Candles in the Sand is a first novel and has soared up the Amazon charts. That's unusual enough to make me decide to take a look at it. It's a Romance, so not my usual genre of choice, but I immediately realised why this book has achieved such startling success - it just works! The descriptions of sunlit locations in Italy are as good as any travel writer could produce and there's a real story here too; a voyage of discovery where the main character seeks to find her true calling and her true self.
Well composed, well written, ideal for lounging in the sun and escaping into another world, this book deserves its success. Credit to the author for a powerful and effective first novel and I imagine there will be many readers out there clamouring for her next offering.
Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN`T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE 24 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
What a great read; I couldn't put this book down I wanted to get to the end to see what was going to happen & I really didn't want the story to end. The author uses such descriptive words I felt I was there with the sun on my face. I really can`t wait for the next one and I have already passed the book on to my mum

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to the 5 star reviews on here 5 Oct 2011

I actually downloaded this book to my kindle by mistake - I was searching for another one with a similar title, but thought I would give it a go anyway. I wasn't expecting an intricate plot - from the descriptive blurb it sounded like an easy holiday-style read that suited me perfectly, having just finished a rather gritty, hard-hitting title.

From the outset I found the writing style quite basic and jarring - I didn't find that it absorbed me into the story, and I found the characters quite irritating and not particularly well formed - to be quite honest, apart from the future of the town, I found I really couldn't care less about what happened to any of them. A lot of the description of how a particular character was feeling was repeated over and over, and some of the dialogue just didn't make sense. This just seemed to get worse as the story continued and, largely because of the jarring writing style, it struggled to hold my attention.

The storyline was predictable, which isn't always a problem with reading this type of book - but to the point where you could already see exactly what was going to happen with each character a mile off, which was a shame. I think I would have enjoyed it more if all the loose ends hadn't been so neatly tied up. Of course, you could argue that it's just escapism and I'm sure many readers enjoy that type of plot but this really wasn't for me.

I did enjoy the descriptions of Italy and San Lavello - for me those were the only passages where the writing came to life, but everything else fell flat. I've read a lot of holiday/chick lit so it's not that I had ill-conceived expectations of the genre, but for me this really didn't work at all.

I downloaded this onto my Kindle expecting the usual fun, light hearted, easy reading, chick lit. This book needs to be labelled Mills & Boon. Appallingly written, very childish, totally predictable. When Anna got her man only 40% into the book I thought there would be a twist or a turn. Not a chance, more inane drivel all the way to the end. I wanted to slap Anna by the end of the story and the mothers both did such a u-turn they must have had total brain transplants. I'm not a literary snob, I read all sorts of stuff and this is down there with the latest dross by Martina Cole (which was in my opinion even worse than this, so bad that I actually burnt it).

While the premise of this novel is a nice one with good settings, there are so many editing errors it takes the reader out of the story time and again. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable
A feel good story but a little bit predictable. The kindle version was poorly written, very bad grammar in places as if it had been translated from another language into English.
