For the first time in my life, someone understood !, 3 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Canary and Chronic Fatigue (Paperback)
This book tells the story of my life. When I read the book I felt enormous relief. For the first time in my life, some one actually described accurately my illness - starting with the symptoms, going through phases of the illness and right to the impossible struggle of trying to get diagnosed - and acknowledged ! I have had most of the classical symptoms of CFS for years - but until I read this book I never quite realised that they were connected. Neither did any of the family doctors that I went to. The book is easy to read and optimistic - because it gives hope for healing, and because it treats CFS for what it its: a physical situation that needs healing. It would teach some physicians about how patients feel when they come to a doctor who is simply ignorant and unwilling to learn. If my physicians read it and understood - they would realise that CFS is a real, physical thing - it's not depression, it's not shirking it's not imaginary !

Helping me towards recovery, 25 Feb 2010
This review is from: The Canary and Chronic Fatigue (Paperback)
This book helped greatly to put my situation into perspective. Dr Ali answers a very important question: Why or how are you as a CFS sufferer different? Why can't you eat like person X and get away with it? His answer to this question is crucial because it will help you towards changing your lifestyle in a different way to other people - a way that will be the recovery path for you.
If you have CFS you are different. That's the premise of the book. His main theory is that CFS is caused by accelerated oxidative damage/stress... It's experienced by everyone to some degree but debilitating only in 'fatiguers' But what to do about it?
The closest practical path I've found, that is proving helpful to me is the PH Miracle diet/lifestyle originally taught by Dr Young. I've learned that the Acid/Alkaline and Oxidation concepts are scientifically very similar but not exacly identical. The main thing is that this is a practical path that has proven to be helpful for many people. I'd suggest you see a Nutritional Microscopist and not try the PH diet on your own because it's radical and requires specific supplementation if you are to succeed (B12, Omega oils etc).
There's no practical path in this Canary book (unless you know someone that can do "IV nutritional protocols").
I hope this review helps someone. As always listen to yourself before testing any new treatment. Don't listen blindly to me, a family member, or even any medical expert. Ah, but you've learned that already haven't you? That's one of the key lessons this illness teaches.
