Biography

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on ... I searched and searched for this recording of what is ultimately the Roxy & Elsewhere set, played with a smaller band. The Helsinki Tapes play capture the liveness probably better than Roxy. The musicianship is even better than Roxy, as the band personnel had been touring the set for around a year. Features Chester Thompson on drums (my all time fave Zappa drummer), NMB on vocals, flute, sax and bizarreness, George Duke on all things keyboardy, Ruth Underwood on percussion(playing some of the fastest chops I have ever heard), Tom Fowler on bass and of course FZ. The humour in this recording is raw, the playing so sharp u may cut your ears, I cant recommend this album enuff!!!!

You need this in your life. Over two hours of the most sublime and uplifting music you will ever hear which will have you dancing like such a fool that the neighbours will worry about you. If you do nothing else before you expire then please listen to this. It's for your own good

If you like Frank Zappa you will love this album, it is the Helsinki concert recorded on the 22nd September 1974. I personally have over 40 Frank Zappa albums and this one is definetly in my top 5. It really captures the essence of the band, and you can tell that they enjoyed playing at this time. Even some of the more challenging tunes are played with ease. The only way I can recommend this album is to give it 5 stars. If you are a true Frank Zappa fan you will not be disappointed. Excellent!

The Helsinki concert is probably one of the top live performances that Zappa's 'ensambles' ever realised. All the players are truly inspired and Zappa himself seems gifted of a super-natural symbiotic interaction with his guitar. Enlightening!

Having heard most of Zappa's material from the late 70's onwards, this was the last of the YCDTOSA series that I bought. I wasn't expecting much, but this album was a revelation. Many consider this line up to be one of the best Frank ever assembled, and I have to agree, it's awsome. The guitar work on Inca Roads and RDNZL shows Frank at his best. If you like 'One Size Fits All' (also highly recommended), this is an album you're sure to enjoy.

I've owned this album for over a year and it's still at the top of my playlist. The two disc set kicks off in mellow style with "Tush Tush Tush" before really setting the tone with "Stinkfoot" which on this occassion makes reference to "a little Russian restaurant I know." Could this be the start of yet another tale from the road? For more fun, skip to "Room Service," this really is a hoot.
"Montana" on Disc2 is notable as another example of great Zappa and audience interplay at the start.A guy in the audience wants "Whipping Post" so Frank obliges with "Whipping Floss."Zappa's seemingly mock outrage at the band's initial performance of the opening bars cracks me up every time.
This album has the fun of the lewder material and the sheer delight of his jazz. The performances are polished as other reviewers have noted so I shall not bleat on about that. Satumaa (Finnish Tango) is my favourite track: it combines the delightful percussion provided by Ruth Underwood with some ludicrous vocals and builds to a searing crescendo.
This is a classic live album. Buy it and kick the marrow out of your own shins for never seeing a Zappa show.

I think most of the YCDTOSA-releases is somewhat overstated. Most of them is put together with stuff of very variable quality, and from quite different times in Zappas career, and must be considered as suitable for the hardcore collector only. That's not the case regarding volume 2. This release contains stuff from the 1974 legendary Helsinki-consert only, and is therfore much more consistent than the other releases in the series.
And what a concert! I think this is the best band Zappa ever put together, maybe with the exeption of the 1988-band. It plays so tight that you sometimes have difficulty in believe what you actually hear. And Zappa himself does one of his best performances ever put on tape. Listen for example to the guitarsolo on RNDZL, it's just amazing. I think both Zappa and the band is sound better on this recording than on Roxy and Elsewhere, recorded the year before, but with many of the same mucicians.
If you'r looking for what Zappa stood for at his absolutely best, buy this CD, and forget the other releases in the series, at least untill you have been a collector you too...

Not much to add to the previous reviewers comments except that, as well as being further evidence of Frank's outlandish genius, it also happens to be a rare example of a Zappa album that you can play around your family without fear of warping young minds for life. Dawp! Nope! Hang on - there's the track on disc 1 about Room Service and the stuff Frank would like them to bring up to his room. OK. So apart from the bit about room service, which might raise some adolescent sniggers, this is a Zappa disc that you can actually play in front of the whole family. Along with this peace of mind you get a two hour concert from 74 of a jaw-dropping performance from one of Frank's legendary touring bands, which sounds like Hendrix meets Stravinsky by way of Groucho Marx, with a bit of Dada cabaret thrown in for good measure. Plus you get a lot of just downright beautiful guitar solos, lovingly constructed from the sharpest of broken glass, and loads of the eternally amazing flying sticks of Ruth Underwood's xylophone, the lady who brings that touch of conservatoire class to this otherwise nefarious band of highly-gifted rock'n'roll delinquents.
