4.0 out of 5 stars essential for fans, 6 Dec 2003
those of you who missed out on getting the 1999 can box set would do very well to pick up this dvd. weighing in at 2 dvds and a cd of the bands various solo projects this is real value for money. it features a live concert (the can-free-concert from 1972), 2 documentaries and various other bots and pieces. the live stuff is priceless. can always sounded strangely inhuman, with their incredible virtuoso skills and the inventive style of their music, so it is good to see them in the flesh performing, proving once and for all that they are human. but the footage has been irritatingly spliced with other footage and the sound is faded in and out. what you really want is unadulterated footage of them playing. but that's just a minor quibble, as it is all brilliant anyway. seeing noel edmonds introducing them on british top of the pops is hilarious! the interview footage is fascinating and amusing. it is about time that this fantastic and strange band were given wide release on dvd, and it has happened. this set does the band proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you dig it?, 11 Jun 2006
By John Free "blackoz" (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
Can are THE progenitors of modern music. There is music before Can and music after Can. Without Can we'd be still listening to endless pentatonic guitar riffs and eviscerated prog self-indulgence. There would be no disco, no electronica, no punk, no "alternative music", no anything. Can showed the way forward for rock in the post-Woodstock confusion. They invented postmodernism in rock by doing the simplest, most unthinkable thing: they deconstructed rock music and put it back together in a new, stripped-down, pulse-driven fashion emphasizing the total effect and totally banishing the bourgeois cult-of-personality song structures of the day. Their music sounds as fresh and invigorating today as it did back in 1968 and their influence can be felt and heard everywhere. It's that simple.

So many critics and listeners just didn't - and still don't - get it. Karoli was out of tune and couldn't play like Clapton to save himself. Suzuki couldn't sing. Liebezeit played the same thing for ten minutes without the Ginger Baker fills and frills every sixteen bars. Czukay's dead leaden sound was more like a burping pulse than a note. Schmidt played more sound effects than "real" music. Yes, exactly! Take away the ego safety net and you're left with the most hypnotic, zentrancing music of the age.

If there is a "secret" to Can it's Jaki Liebezeit. Can understood that in any rock band the drummer is the focus. So Jaki became the pure essence of the music and the others built the rest around him. How rewarding to see him, towards the end of the DVD playing in the early 2000s with an even smaller kit than he did in 1972 - no foot pedals! - and playing just as beautifully and brilliantly.

Ignore the "sages" who say the music died when Damo Suzuki left after "Future Days". These professors didn't listen to Can back then. They're talking through their fundamental orifice. They only "dig" it now because it's cool now to recognise Can's influence. The point is that, like all the greats, Can do what they do without a thought for the narrow-minded and cliché-bound. "Below This Level" embodies Can as much as "One More Night" and is just as infectious.

This DVD excels in every way. It took me over 30 years to finally get to "meet" these guys through this DVD after first being captivated by "Ege Bamyasi" back in 1973. I treasure it. It's my favourite music DVD ... and that's really saying something!

4.0 out of 5 stars Can DVD - fast forward the old men!, 31 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Can were one of the most mind expanding yet accessible and paletable of the Krautrock / prog rock era But witnessing the gradual decline of the band from the idiosyncratic and pioneering works of 1969-1973 to the shockingly bad 80's derivative hogwash made me consider eating some 'cake' immediately.
Bands like Can should bring something back from the frontiers, not write songs like 'I want more' so they can get on TOTP, that's what boybands are for!

OK here's the specifics -

DVD1 :

Live Free Festival - very good, Damo Suzuki, prog mayhem and psychedelic editing make this a winner.
Can Notes - Aaaarrrgh, no, no! Holger does a bad cover version of a Velvet undergound song, I'd rather see my mother naked. And more of the same, it's badly shot on a domestic cam.

DVD2:
1:Documentary - good, but bizarely edited. Including interviews from through the years, with the most recent being the worst shot (!). This is interspersed with great clips from German, French and UK TV specials. Hooray for DVD chapters, so we can avoid the worst of it.
2:Remixes, and making of the remixes - bad music, and a dull film about it
3:Award ceremony - if you like award ceremonies, this is for you.

CD: I am really, really sorry guys, it's just the same uninspiring synth twaddle you can find anywhere, not for me.

As this is an offical release they dont talk about such things as Damo leaing to become Jehovah's Witness, or Jaki edging Holger out in favour of an increased 'profesionalism' and 'virtuosity'.

All in all though this is worth buying , the festival footage, the early stuff (with Damo Suzuki), the history, the education(!) and the TV clips in the DVD2 documentary make up for the follies of their later years. I give this 4 stars because the good bits deserve it.
