Not bad. 15 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I almost enjoyed this book, but it still had some irritating aspects.

Firstly, there were the typos. I can live with the odd one or two, but when the author states that 28 billion people watched the 2002 world cup final, something is wrong.

Also, the author's style wasn't particularly appealing to me, though I will admit that this may have more to do with my preferences than anything else. But subjects that could be interesting or humourous, weren't.

On the plus side, the range of sports covered is immense. Not only are the main ones covered (football, cricket, rugby), but also the 'posh' sports such as rowing, sailing and horse racing.

It's an ideal birthday or christmas present for anyone interested, however slightly, in sport as there will be something for all sport lovers. But how on earth did it get the 'Sunday Time Sports Book of the Year Award'? There must have been better ones than this?

Well worth a read 3 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Well worth reading to obtain a feel for the history and development of a variety of sports in Britain, including all the main ones and many minor ones making a total of about 14.

I agree that there are some irritations in the authors style. He is inclined to mention many more individuals and feats than he needs to in order to make a point thus allowing one to skip the odd page. There are many examples given how sport has contributed to vocabulary and idiom eg 'stake' and 'on your tod' coming to mind at this moment but there are many others of interest which add greatly to the book.

Though individual sports may have their history recorded somewhere or other I have not seen a comprhensive account like this in book form. Taken as a whole I found it a fascinating read,

I was given this book by my son for my birthday. As a sports enthusiast, I appreciate interesting facts about different sports and this amazing book satisfies this need. I enjoy dipping in and out of this paperback and can certainly highly recommend it. Great present.
