I've given the album 5 stars because it deserves it - despite a few niggles about the mixes - something very strange seems to happen in "Do the Chisel" for instance - but it's still an out and out classic. The Soft Boys' mix of post-punk savvy with Syd Barrett style psychedelia creates a much darker sound than you might expect. However, anyone expecting a cd with a stack of bonus tracks, as I was, will be disappointed. The cd has no bonus material on at all, and such bonus material as there is exists only as downloads, which would be fine (as long as you have internet access) if the instructions contained in the scrap of paper inserted in the album sleeve actually worked! I haven't managed to get hold of it yet, and am waiting to hear back from YepRoc. I'm cursing, now; I could have got the whole lot as a download album for much less than the cost of the cd, and had less trouble! OK, 5 stars for the album; 0 for the bonus tracks, because they aren't on the CD!

I am in full agreement with many of the sentiments in previous reviews. As a fairly recent fan of the band I have slowly collected the majority of Soft Boys recordings. But I am still slightly confused by how many different versions, mixes, takes actually exist. I have The Soft Boys release 1976 - 1981, this Yeproc re-release of Can of Bees and still don't have the original recording unless I seek out the original vinyl release!!! Other than that gripe I am pleased with the release overall, however I prefer many of the versions\ mixes available on The Soft Boys 1976 - 1981 release and highly recommend diehard fans get their hands on a copy.

The original vinyl version is IMHO far far superior to this (which sounds as if it was re-mixed by someone with tinnitus) - and it is for sale up there, under 'Collectible', if you would like it

With all the 'hype' being bandied about pre-release that this was going to duplicate the original vinyl release, albeit in CD form (and there's a lot of that sort of thing about nowdays what with those Beatles chaps and Mr Bobby D's mono box), I was 'quite' excited.

However, the 'takes' and 'mixes' of some of the tracks used certainly don't match the original vinyl release from 1979 (although they are closer to some of those used for the second vinyl issue released circa 1984 -- but then again there was a different track listing for that version anyway ...). Not to say that this latest CD is not enjoyable -- just that diehards will still need to seek out the original LP.

Oh God, read the above and call me anal -- what do I care -- ha ha -- wink wink!

I first came across Robyn Hitchcock in 1975 with his acoustic review - Robyn Hitchcock's Worst Fears. He was evidently destined for great things. I owned this on vinyl when it came out; still sounds as raw, original and musical as it did when it came out. No one can write lyrics like he can.
