Product Description

Product Description

Can-Am lasted only 8 1/2 seasons, from 1966 into 1974, but what ground-shaking, car-shaping years those were. With minimal rules and lavish prize money, the Can-Am attracted top-flight teams and superstar drivers. It also encouraged innovation, and racing's most inventive minds brought out novel and astounding ideas. Chaparral, Lola, McLaren, Porsche and Shadow are among 22 of these epic machines revisited through stunning studio photography by Peter Harholdt and vivid descriptions by Pete Lyons, long considered the dean of Can-Am journalists.

About the Author

Pete Lyons launched his career in motorsports journalism by covering the Can-Am, and he says it spoiled him forever. While he also enjoyed Formula One, long-distance sports cars, Indy cars, the Trans-Am, Formula 5000, rallying, off-road racing, and motorcycles, the Can-Am suited the lawless side of his soul. This is his third book about those epic days. Pete and wife Lorna live in Big Bear City, CA, in the service of two cats. Peter Harholdt combines his love of cars and racing with his professional talents as a photographer of fine arts for museums and collectors. From racing in the 24 Hours of Daytona to shooting for the Smithsonian, White House, and the Louvre, he is uniquely qualified to convey the technical details as well as the beauty of these cars built for speed. He has developed a portable studio that allows him to create remarkably detailed portraits of cars in any environment or locale. Peter lives in West Palm Beach, FL with his five golden retrievers and partner, Donna Tribby.

Fantastic book! 17 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
What a fantastic book. The quality of the photo's is amazing, they really bring you up close to these incredible cars. This must be the first book to provide such up close detail of the Can-Am cars. There are in-depth chapters on 22 cars, including 4 Mclarens & 3 Porsches as well as Ferrari's attempt at Can-Am: the 612P. The pages are of high quality and the book arrives with a presentation cover box. Well worth a look.

Great Book, Typical Pete Lyons details and anecdotes! 17 Mar 2011
By DCNW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a very nice book that puts a cap on the Pete Lyons landmark books on Can Am, which he covered during that incredible era of racing. Its more of an art book, obviously, than his original efforts, but, Can Am cars are works of art now, rolling masterpieces in their own right. I might have included a few other Can Am cars, but the logistics in creating this book were not trivial. I saw one of the book shoots at Infineon Raceway, and it was done to the highest professional photography standards, basically monopolizing access to a priceless car for nearly an entire day, turning a paddock into a photo studio. Lyons is a world authority on the subject, and all of his books are must have, including this one.

I was not happy with Amazon's packing of this book, it was simply loose in the box, with no wrapping, and they had put an inventory sticker on the case, which was hard to get off. These are art books and should be wrapped in some manner, shipping expensive books the way they shipped the one I bought- idiotic!

Full-page color photos blend with technical specs to make car enthusiasts drool 19 Nov 2010
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
No serious transportation or auto history collection should be without Can-Am Cars in Detail; for despite its hefty price tag, it's an outstanding and unique coverage unequaled elsewhere. 22 cars featured here in an oversized, lavish edition complete with slipcase are not all the great ones from the series, but they're some of the best - and have been restored to original splendor and photographed in detail here. Full-page color photos blend with technical specs to make car enthusiasts drool.

Stunning 4 Feb 2011
By Dr. Stephen A. Stuart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book doesn't capture all of the cars, nor does it capture all the most well-known cars; but boy, it does capture some beautiful machinery and tells some amazing stories. Any fan of this era of racing, or any one who likes elegant and track-worn cars should buy this book. Stunning!
