Book Description

Camping is one of our favorite pastimes, and for good reason! There aren’t too many other activities out there today that help us slow down and unplug from the busy-ness of life in the way that camping does. Time just seems to slow down and work feels farther away than ever. There is something about getting rid of the modern conveniences that allows us to relax and just enjoy being alive without all the email, texts, and business calls getting in the way.

The only drawback to camping has always been good food. It's the unfortunate side effect of 'roughing it' that you don't have access to an oven, refrigerator, microwave, or any of the other appliance that we all rely on to get a good, wholesome, home-cooked meal. It's not like we starve on the camping trip, but hot dogs and marshmallows are only fun to eat for so long before it gets tedious. There is always the temptation to step up the experience by bringing along some of those modern cooking conveniences, which some people do, opting for big stovetops and electric travel cookers of all kinds of shapes and sizes. There is something about that, though, that dilutes the real experience of camping. Isn't the point to be able to unplug and get away from all the stuff? Where does someone draw the line if cooking supplies are all good no matter how modern or complicated. At the same time, we should be able to have good food during our camp. Right? The point is to enjoy the adventure and the vacation. And when the food selection is that limited, it hurts the experience. If only we could enjoy the adventure and fun of making new and exciting foods without the bother of packing up all of our kitchen gadgets in hopes of getting access to electrical power.

Besides the enjoyment of getting to try new foods and being the hero of the campfire, there are a few other reasons to take these recipes with you out into the wild. These reasons are all health-related. Now you can feel good about being health conscious, in addition to making less trash, taking less equipment with you into the wild, and getting to enjoy a variety of tasty foods.

Here are some recipes you will find in the book:

S’more Pudding
Toasted Angel Food Cake
Basic S'mores
Breakfast Hash Mix
Charred Kale
Four-Cheese Potatoes
Campfire Calzone
Campfire Fondue
Foil-Wrapped Potatoes & Mushrooms
Easy Trails Trail Mix
Grilled Chicken & Veggie Packet
Root Veggie Taco Packet
Scrambled Campfire Eggs
Vegetable Rainbow
Peanut Butter Oat Cookies

and much MUCH more!

while some of the recipes say to cook on campfire and some say oven, it clearly says that for those who have an RV, or camper, the recipes are there. even if some were a bit difficult when camping, the ideas were cool and enjoyed the book and hope to read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Camping recipes 19 July 2014

I enjoyed some of the recipes but most of them had no camping related instructions. One even had instructions for baking in the oven. I am a scout and would have hoped to see more instruction on how to cook these on a fire. I did however find those recipes that did include campfire cooking directions to be helpful and were new recipes that I could try with my scouts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very informative 31 July 2014

I was hoping to find some new ideas for cooking outdoor, but gained very little from this book. Many recipes were not complete and at least one didn't give instructions for cooking over the open fire but rather for making the dish in the oven. My search for a good recipes will continue.
