4.0 out of 5 stars Huge and detailed, but not detailed enough., 27 Jul 2000
By A Customer
The Heartlands are massive - they cover several thousand square miles - but almost all of this is essentially a Western European Mediaeval culture analogue, and even then, there's not nearly as much conflict as with real Earth history. I know the ADnD system is designed primarily for this kind of setting but there's not enough xenophobia and inter-country politics for my liking. For most of the Middle Ages virtually every country in Europe was at war with its neighbours - if not with several of its neighbours! In the Realms, there is too little distinction made between the regions and their political interaction with one another. Don't get me wrong, it's my setting of choice for ADnD, but that's only because WoC haven't published a better one yet. For complete detail and breadth of concept, check out Glorantha, for the RuneQuest and Hero Wars systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars AD&D Fantasy=Forgotten Realms, 12 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This boxed set is amazing, filled with everything that the Dungeon Master and players need to play in the Forgotten Realms setting. It is the definitive of fantasy for AD&D, and AD&D is the best fantasy gaming system. You can't get much better then that. It is a great purchase for novices as well as experienced Dungeon Masters. The descriptions set a rock-solid base for campaigns which you can only build on.

4.0 out of 5 stars God is in the details.
This is a fantastic setting in which an experienced gamemaster can set a campaign. The level of detail is rich, yet not unwieldy. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The most detailed campaign setting - and the best one.
The setting is by far the most detailed setting, and this all adds up to the richest most flavoursome setting in the AD&D world. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars The most detaled game world ever.
The problem, for me, with the Forgotten Realms line is exactly what my One-line above says, it is the most detailed fantasy game world. Read more
