Camp Rock is a Disney Channel original movie about a rockin' teen summer camp that's highly appealing to tweenies and young teens despite the movie's failure to favourably compare with truly great Disney Channel movies like High School Musical. Joe Jonas (of the Jonas Brothers stars as Shane Gray, a member of the rock band Connect 3, who is compelled to serve as an instructor at Camp Rock in order to counteract his increasingly negative public image. Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin) is the camp diva whose self-absorption defies description, Caitlyn (Alyson Stoner) is a past Tess groupie who's now ostracised from the popular kids at camp, and Mitchie (Demi Lovato) is a camp newcomer whose mother is the camp cook. Caitlyn initially befriends Mitchie, but the friendship wanes when Mitchie makes up an elaborate story about her family to get accepted into Tess's exclusive clique. As Mitchie struggles to maintain her façade around camp, Shane begins to reform his bad-boy ways and find his own personal voice and he and Mitchie become friends--unfortunately, their new relationship is based partially on Mitchie's lies. In the end, Mitchie's deception is exposed as is Tess' true villainy and the perfect summer camp experience threatens to turn into the worst summer ever for everyone involved. Camp Rock is infused with lots of energy, fun choreography, and a ton of good, if not particularly memorable, music. Add in the cast of generally unlikable characters with extreme characteristics whose changes of heart at the end of the film are not particularly believable, and Disney's got an entertaining film for tweenies and teens that adults might just as well skip. --Tami Horiuchi --This text refers to the DVD edition.

'Camp Rock' is what I would describe as a good substitute for the finished series of the 'High School Musical' films.
It ticks all the typical Disney movie boxes; shy, unpopular leading lady, hot crush (Joe Jonas), nasty blonde rich girl & a good ol' moral at the end.
'Camp Rock' is better than 'High School Musical 2' but not better than 1 & 3. I don't think there's a mere chance of any Disney musical having a hit bigger than 'Breaking Free' but 'Camp Rock' does have a few catchy tunes, the best being 'This Is Me' sung by Demi Lovato & Joe Jonas.
Ah, the Jonas Brothers. Three pop-rock virgins with a loyal tween fan base, teamed with Disney, a match made in heaven. The middle Jonas (Joe)has the most air time, the other two aren't really in the film for longer than three & a half minutes.
The stoy is about Mitchie, a 'normal' girl, who constantly smiles & she has a talent for songwriting & singing & is soon thrust into the all-singing all dancing world of 'Camp Rock'. Then there's Shane part of a band named Connect Three (real life band Jonas Brothers).
Everything is happy & merry until Mitchie becomes part of the 'popular clique'.
'Camp Rock' is good for its target audience, it IS a Disney movie afterall, so there are going to be the inevitable conveniences & morals that heve been touched upon many a film before. But the film is sweet & innocent, the underlying message is be yourself. On a more sour note, the other two unintentional messages are to get famous- be a singer, whatever. It seems the kids watching films like this & the 'HSM' moives are all being lead to believe that in order to truly be someone they have to dance, or sing (mainly both).

5.0 out of 5 stars Take me to Camp Rock! 30 Mar 2010
By Ms. C. A. Anderson VINE VOICE
Camp Rock is another unique and ingenious film from Disney. If you liked High School Musical then you are sure to like this one. If not you will still like it!

It is a simple storyline but appeals to many age groups with its idea of falling in love with an older boy. The songs are so catchy and the talented Demi Lovato shows what she is made of with her songs. Her voice is amazing and her character Michie is central to the story. The story is simple yet effective as many of the Disney films are.

With help from the rocky Jonas Brothers and with Joe Jonas cast as Demi Lovatos love interest at Camp Rock, it sets out to showcase the talent of Disney and gives girls and boys hope that talent gets you that far.

Over all, the film is an enchanting laugh out loud film with catchy dance numbers, sing alongs and a love which defies the odds. Girls and boys will like this as my little cousin who is a boy loves it too just as much as my sister!

Personally I wish there was a real Camp Rock when I was younger!!! I also think they are planning a sequel which should be good and hopefully it will compare to how great this on was!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be yourself you you'll ROCK.... 10 Jan 2009
A Kid's Review
"My mum's president of Hot Tunes TV - in China."

When Mitchie Torres finally gets to attend Camp Rock, the rockin' camp for aspiring musicians and singers, she is estatic. When she arrives and sees the snobbyDiva of Camp, Tess Tyler, everything would be perfect if she could get friends with the Queen Bee. Unfortunately Tess Tyler only likes to hang with people who have "connections." When Mitchie says that her dad owns a hardwear store Tess is so not interested in her. But Tess is a LOT more interest when Mitchie blurts out, "My mum is president of Hot Tunes Tv- in China." Great! Tess wants to be friends with her now! Only drawback? Mitchie's mum is not president of Hot Tunes....she's the cook - at Camp Rock. So Mitchie is sub-Queen under false pretences and so begins her rocky ride of Summer lies.

To add to the story, Shane Grey who makes up part of the famous band Connect three, is at Camp to teach. He doesn't want to, he is a "jerk" and has serious attitude. He hears a girl singing in the mess hall but doesn't see who it is, that girl is Mitchie. His mission is to find the girl with the voice. Back to Mitchie: Instead of lving the dream and singing solo at club jam, she decides to join in with Tess' band and sing back up instead of singing her heart out solo. She thinks her lies will make her Summer perfect but maybe she realises, they will turn it into a Nightmere.

This is a film with catchy tunes, good acting, funny parts and the overall message of "don't be ashamed to be you." Its message will inspire kids and teens who watch it. Its also a clean film, even cleaner then high school musical which is saying a lot, I love this film, and its definately one of my favs. It could be called "The nect HSM" but I think its got a totally different feeling then High School Musical. They are both different. But if you are a die hard fan of HSM you wil proabably at least enjoy "Camp Rock" if not become one of its greatest fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Were Feeling the Rock 20 Aug 2008
By Mark Baker TOP 500 REVIEWER
Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is a high school student who writes her own songs. Her dream is to spend her summer at Camp Rock, a summer camp for musicians of all stripes. Things don't look good until her mother (Maria Canals-Barrera) lands a job as the camp cook. True, Mitchie has to help out around the kitchen, but she'll still get to attend most of the functions.

On the first day, she sees Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin), the daughter of multi-Grammy award winning pop artist TJ Tyler. Tyler is the most popular girl at camp, and in an effort to impress her, she lies about her mother's job.

Meanwhile, Mitchie also meets Shane Gray (Joe Jonas), the difficult member of the group Connect 3 (the other two members of the group are played by Kevin and Nick Jonas). Shane has been roped into teaching at the camp to rehabilitate his image. Mitchie makes an impression on him. But what will happen when her lies become common knowledge?

Disney's attempt to create another musical franchise almost works. The music is pretty good here and ranges from pop to rock to hip hop. I'm willing to forgive the illogical backup singers during some of the musical numbers (like when Shane is singing alone at the lake) since these were obviously intended to be radio singles as well as musical numbers. The acting is good. And the setting is absolutely fun.

However, the story just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's because I have always been too independent, but watching Mitchie keep lying to maintain a friendship with the most obviously two faced girl in the world wasn't believable. In fact, it bothered me that it took so long for some of the others to see through Tess as well. And the climax just felt too rushed.

The idea behind this movie was good. And the music is decent. But the story just doesn't do it for me.
