'Essential.' The Observer

Product Description

With ancient chiefdoms tucked between terraced fields and volcanic mountains, Mount Cameroon – Africa's highest peak, the impressive Waza National Park with its herds of elephants, and the coast's sleepy palm-fringed beaches, Cameroon has no shortage of attractions, yet it somehow fails to be a tourist haunt. The only full-length, English-language guide, this book contains essential information on nature, culture and staying healthy plus practical details like getting around and accommodation options in the city and countryside. It includes details of wildlife and bird sites, ancient tribal kingdoms, colourful trading towns, 'pygmy' hunting camps and even where to see the endangered lowland gorilla.

This one is easy...do not leave home without this guide!

whether you are interested in the captivating culture of Cameroon or the stunning wildlife, this guide covers all topics with enough depth to always supply the right amount of guidance without seeming dry and boring.

I used this book on a 9 week trip to Cameroon, starting in Douala and travelling overland to Mora in the Extreme North, so I put the majority of the information to the test. I found much of the information out of date.

A much better resource was a printed copy of the 40 or so pages on Cameroon that Lonely Planet do on their website as a chapter to buy from their Africa book as a PDF. It takes up less space, has better information and considerably less guff.

By all means buy this book for the pretty pictures, otherwise, the rest is best regarded as door stop/ fly swatter/ improvised fan, as You will rapidly discover it to be useless in comparison to the Lonely planet printout in a plastic wallet at the top of your bag, which will become a prized possession.
