Book Description

1 Aug 2001 Discovering
This book traces the changes in the years from 1945 to 1965 when there were considerable advances in photography and in cameras. At the start of the period most snapshot photographs were black and white contact prints made from box and folding bellows camera negatives, by the end snapshooters enjoyed the simplicity of instant loading cameras, automatic exposure control, built-in flash and colour prints.

Whilst a rather slim and compact volume, this book is packed with information about the major camera manufacturers of the period and the development of their product lines. Economic factors, such as the post war import restrictions in Britain, are also discussed, as are developments in films, flash, camera features, and lenses.

The book's main chapters are arranged by type, such as snapshot, roll-film folding, non-reflex miniature, reflex, subminiature, and special purpose (underwater, stereo and Polaroid). Each chapter has sections for each major camera producing country, which describes the manufacturers and their cameras, with some discussion of special features. There are many photos of the cameras discussed.

Overall, a great book for an aspiring collector, or any photographer with an interest in history.

5.0 out of 5 stars camera collecting 4 Sep 2010
By Fred G. Scheuerman - Published on Amazon.com
Being a collecter of older film cameras I have purchased several books on the subject. This little book, along with Jason Schneider's three books, is one of the best as it is very readable, well organized, and full of useful information and backgound on the subject. Too many other books spend chapters on subjects like "the best places to buy used cameras". I just wish that Mr. White had written a second book covering cameras from 1965 up to the advent of the digital age.

Great if you are interested in unique or ground breakers. Wish it was longer and covered more ground. Nice reference.
