When we needed to upgrade our old tablets from last year, we tested this Starpad 3G with the 1 front facing camera and the other Starpad 3G Dual Cam model with the 2 cameras (1 front and 1 rear facing camera which I have also reviewed) to see which ones to buy for our guys to use in the field. They are both the same tablet pc exactly as far as I can see apart from the dual cameras on the dual cam model so my reviews for both will be similar.
We already use the older Cambridge Sciences G7 III from last year for our engineers so when these new ones came out I thought we'd give them a go and see if there have been any improvements.....and there are lots.
.It's much faster than the older G7 III. The A10 CPU is certainly much faster than the Samsung CPU in last year's G7 III and is much more stable.
.It's a lot thinner and lighter. I was a bit concerned since our guys visit client sites all day and it could get knocked about quite a bit since they all carry them in the pockets of their overalls, but the lads we gave the first ones to say they have no problems at all and the screen is an IPS screen so it's pretty robust.
.The screen is a high resolution so it's great for the apps we use for image mapping and even with the 7 inch screen, there's no bleeding. Also the touch response is amazing. It really feels like a much more expensive device.
.The battery life is excellent. We're getting a good 6-7 hours between charges. But it would be nice to have a car charger since our main use is out in the field.
.The best part I think is the built in 3G. The guys have reported excellent coverage with Orange which is the network we use with our work mobiles (I've tested with the O2 sim card from my personal phone and it's just as good as what I've seen with Orange)
.

I bought this tablet mainly for its 3G connection because I wanted something quick and easy to connect to the internet whilst travelling, without having to carry a separate dongle. Compared to other tablets which offer this feature, the price is extremely competitive.

I bought a voice/data SIM card at reasonable cost on a month to month basis and it works fine giving me unlimited internet connection when away from wifi. In setting up the SIM card, it worked out of the box for phone and text, but I had to go to the provider website to find the full APN details to enter for the internet connection. These were readily available on the website though and once entered it all worked fine.

I have been very happy with the tablet so far and it does everything I need it to do - browse the web, email, play video, ebook reader, connect to Bluetooth devices, connect to USB storage devices, keyboard, mouse. The other thing it does, which surprised me, is to make phone calls and send text messages just like any mobile phone, though it's a bit too big to be convenient for phone calls. What I will use it most for though is connecting to the web whilst travelling and the size of the screen makes it much more usable for this than a mobile phone.

I was concerned about finding accessories for an unbranded tablet, but in fact have had no problems buying generic accessories such as a case and USB keyboard and mouse. It works fine with my Kingston 32gb micro SD card and also recognises my USB memory stick. The SD card is not the easiest to remove if you want to store data on more than one and swap them over, but it is manageable. The SIM card is also very tricky to remove, but once in and working there should be no need to remove it.

I bought this tablet to take on holiday in order to keep on top of email, to entertain our six year old and to take photos and video.

On all three counts the tablet excelled.

The little `un had a happy holiday using it to watch films in the car- it will now replace our more bulky portable DVD player.

I have loads of reasonable quality holiday snaps and some great panoramic photos of scenery (I got a bit obsessed with the Pano setting)

And I didn't come home to an inbox of thousands of emails.

I was attracted to the fact that it has both 3g and Wi-Fi but I must confess I haven't made much use of the 3g yet as everywhere we went we were able to find adequate free Wi-Fi connections.

When I have tested the 3g, it is slow to load pages but I am 99% certain that is to do with the limitations of 3g and my phone provider rather than an issue with the tablet itself. It is there as a handy back up.

I would caution one thing. Whilst the user manual is clear and concise, there is a mistake on page 15 where it says that sim cards need to be mounted with the contacts facing the front of the tablet. This isn't so- the contacts face the back. This caused me a fair bit of frustration at first as I did not want to ram the card in incorrectly. Easily sorted by a call to Cambridge Sciences technical support.

What else? OK, some Apps freeze or won't load correctly- again, not sure this is a problem with the tablet rather than the apps themselves.

Sometimes the browser also freezes for a few seconds and puts up a `not responding' message. This usually clears quickly and isn't really a problem.

The battery life is reasonable at around 3 hours when in use- playing music, videos etc.
