Review

"Webster’s approach to Hebrew grammar is...very innovative. The inclusion of the Interactive CD-Rom is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book ...Not only does the CD include the TekScroll program, but it also includes a full workbook, several reference aids, and vocabulary flash cards ready to print. ...Overall, I highly recommend the Cambridge Introduction to Biblical Hebrew whether for the person interested in learning first year Hebrew individually or for professors of Bible colleges or seminaries who are looking for a cutting-edge grammar to use in the classroom. While this grammar is not for the faint of heart on the front end, the student who uses this grammar will likely have an easier time learning Hebrew throughout and likely come out ahead of those students using other grammars. Moreover, its pedagogical sensitivity provides a nice balance and should make learning first year Hebrew a joyful experience."

A message for anyone thinking about buying this: Just do it!

It comes with an amazing piece of software, and frankly the software ALONE is worth more than the cost of this package.

Let's face it - learning any language is hard work (though Hebrew is easier than lots of other languages). Until now, I thought that Learn Biblical Hebrew [With CDROM] was the best way to get started in Hebrew... and... I dunno... maybe I still do.

However, for more in-depth stuff, and for mastering paradigms and vocab, THIS is the one to beat. If you Google Tekscroll, you'll find some good reviews of the software, some with Youtube vids to let you see it before you buy it.

It also comes with lots of PDF goodies - a workbook, answers, paradigm charts...

I just wish I'd discovered this BEFORE I purchased Hebrew Tutor: Learn Biblical Hebrew with Your Own Personal, Interactive Tutor, which is £10 more expensive and a VASTLY inferior product!

If you're totally new to Hebrew, you may think the early chapters spend too much time on nit-picking little rules. Trust me - When I first learned Hebrew I skimmed over this 'syllable' stuff, and I paid for it later!!! And trust this book - you're in safe hands here.

Highly recommended.

There is no getting away from the fact that Hebrew is hard work, and I have to confess that I am not that good with languages to start with. At several points I nearly gave up with this text and tried one of the many other texts - only to realise that I was better off sticking with this one! In the end I made it to the end, and am continuing with my studies.

The more I read this (and other texts) the greater my appreciation for this text grows. Different people have different learning styles. Mine suits understanding over rote memory, and this book definitely scores in this area over just about every other text I have seen. You still need to memorise lots of verbs and things. Something that can't be avoided. But it does help you to understand how the verbs change and why.

So, if you want to learn Biblical Hebrew, and you have a learning style that prefers understanding, this is the book to get. I'd give it five stars, but the excellent TekScroll software that comes with it is based on an old version of Flash and I do not think it will work on the latest Mac Lion for that reason. (I found I had to extract the underlying data file and then run it through an alternative Flash player when I upgraded to Lion.)

great for 1st year students at undergraduate level, you set the pace on this home study course. It is without any doubt beneficial for those who wish to advance there degrees further by reading ancient languages specifically when it is to compliment Theological degrees. Comes with a CD ROM and is well worth the investment.
