Product Description

Product Description
The Cambridge Grammar of English is a major new reference grammar from the world's leading grammar publisher. Using ground breaking language research, it offers clear explanations of spoken and written English based on real everyday usage. A clear two-part structure makes the book particularly user-friendly. In the first section, A-Z entries give more attention to lexico-grammar and other language areas that tend to be neglected in grammar references. The second section covers traditional grammatical categories such as tense, clause structure and parts of speech. The accompanying CD-ROM makes the Cambridge Grammar of English even more accessible with: * The whole book in handy, searchable format. * Audio recordings of all the examples from the book. * Links to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary online for instant definitions of new vocabulary.

Book Description
A major new reference grammar offering the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of spoken and written English based on real everyday usage.

5.0 out of 5 stars TEFL course grammar guide- or a great reference, 29 Dec 2006
By Ross Terelle - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I examined this book alongside several others. I was impressed with the range of topics covered, the extensive answers given, and the practical examples used to illustrate the differences of grammar points being explained. It is quickly becomming a must buy among many EFL teachers due to its novilty and practicality.

It is a little pricey, but it rewards you because, unlike the cheaper, well known grammar guides used by EFL teachers, this actually 1) answers your grammar question and 2) does so in a way that you can understand, as technival terms have been excised and many examples are given. That is to say, if you just want a simple answer to a question posed by your students, you can probally find it in the other books, but this will give you more than a vague idea as to why the answer to their question is what it is (not to be overlooked if you want or students' respect). If you work in a place like Germany, where a good knowledge of grammar is essential if you want to keep your post, then this book is for your. But, if you and your students are no longer satisfied with the old relpy "that's just the way English is", then you should consider this book because it will help you to give an answer to the questions you are being paid to give.

I prefer the hard cover edition, although they seemed to contain information last time I checked. It is a little heavy, and is best left at home or in your office. Concerning those looking for CELTA, Trinity or other TEFL certification, you should consider this your number one grammar reference if you desire to avoid purchasing three books (and still more) that could tell you what this one book does. It is worthy of mention that the reccomended course books do not contain enough information to answer the questions and tasks that you will face on, for instance, a CELTA course. Save yourself the time, money and weight of 2 or 3 grammar books you don't need and just buy this one. I learnt the hard way and purchased many of the wrong books...

4.0 out of 5 stars Advanced grammar, 19 Jun 2008
By Ms. A. L. Squires (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is extremely detailed with many examples. It is really for teachers who already have a good basic knowledge of English grammar. The grammar of "spoken" English is also included.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn`t recommend, 6 Jun 2009
This is the most useless book on English grammar I`ve ever had. It might be useful for teachers who are not native speakers but it doesn`t actually help with the language if you want to improve your English. It just describes how the things are but lacks any logical explanations so all you can do is to memorize thousands of rules. This really isn`t my way of learning.
