Indispensable ! 27 Jun. 2015
By Paul Ricchi - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Yes, this is a monumental and encyclopedic reference book. But it also has a cover-to-cover readable quality. It is enhanced by the instant internal and external cross-referencing available for Kindle reading (although a few of the complicated tables about opera's with multiple performing version get a little bit scrambled). Each entry is lucid.

It is valuable for deeper understanding of familiar works as well as for a first approach to the obscure. With the three volumes of Budden and the Peltz biography, it is indispensable. It stands with Hermann Abert's "W. A. Mozart". Now Verdi's contemporary, Wagner, deserves the same treatment by a living scholar, as does Richard Wagner.

In the interest of full disclosure, as well as a sense of family pride, I am compelled to mention that the editor is a cousin.
