Product Description

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Japan is the essential reference to all facets of Japan past and present. Up-to-date, authoritative and wide-ranging in scope, it covers all the general reader, student, business person, journalist, researcher, tourist or armchair traveller would want to know. A highly absorbing read, the Encyclopedia is also filled with the facts, figures and general data on Japan that make it an indispensable source of information: for example, that the safest place to be during an earthquake in Japan is in a bamboo grove; or that one of the greatest delicacies of Japanese cuisine, the fugu, is deadly poisonous in the hands of an unskilled chef. It gives the latest statistics too, from Japan's dramatically ageing population, to a complete listing of its prime ministers, to valuable data on the powerful Japanese advertising industry. Throughout, full-colour photographs, maps and graphics generously illustrate the book and additional boxed features highlight important topics or issues relevant to the text. This, in a single volume, is a complete and fascinating picture of Japan and its people: its rich inherited traditions and culture, its modern complexities and its tantalising future role in the world.

Good but out of date 23 Jan 2011
Purchased this book from a bookstore as was half the price of amazon. Overall a very good book however it is very out of date, the most recent data in any of the sections seem to be around 1990, there is no mention of any of the modern developments in Japan today, e.g. nothing about the internet, the recession, or even modern or recent Japanese culture. Good for history, geography and traditional japanese culture, but if you are looking something up to date, there are other books.

It seems that this encyclopedia covers everything involving Japan; geography, history, society, politics, economics and much more. The pictures and maps are amazing and even though the book was made years ago, most of the information is still relevant today. Graphs are used to explain and give deeper understanding of economics. A very interesting read for anybody interested in / or going to Japan. All you need to know about Japan, the land of the rising Sun and her traditions in one book. Find out who was Prime Minister during the World Wars, why the origins of the Japanese language are hard to pin-point and why there have been strained relations with Korea. You will definitely learn new facts about this distant and unique land. This book is worth every penny.
