Product Description

Review

"...first-rate collection of original essays...[The Cambridge Companion to Virginia Woolf] is highly recommended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate level course work." Choice --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Virginia Woolf's writing has generated passion and controversy for the best part of a century. Her novels - challenging, moving, and always deeply intelligent - remain as popular with readers as they are with students and academics. The highly successful 2010 Cambridge Companion has been fully revised to take account of new departures in scholarship since it first appeared. The second edition includes new chapters on race, nation and empire, sexuality, aesthetics, visual culture and the public sphere. The remaining chapters, as well as the guide to further reading, have all been fully updated. The Cambridge Companion to Virginia Woolf remains the first port of call for students new to Woolf's work, with its informative, readable style, chronology and authoritative information about secondary sources.

Massively useful 9 Sep 2008

If you need critical opinion on Virginia Woolf, buy this book. i was originally apprehensive because thee wasn't much that directly referred to my coursework book, The Waves. Nevertheless, there's plenty of opinion to draw from, and the critics inside are not always raging Modernist / Feminist sympathisers. There's some nice subtle criticism of Woolf's snobbery and general superiority complex that can be drawn on for counter arguments.

Of course, not everyone buys books like this for academic purposes. The essays don;t require any particular expertise in language (like for example some of the material written on structuralists, decostructionism, unanimism etc...). The essays were most useful in forcing me to view Woolf's essays and fiction critically. It's very easy to agree with some of the points made in her fiction without stepping back and asking "who is she to disregard a whole generation of literature?"

Helped me with A2 English Literature Coursework, will no doubt be suitable for university work, etc. Thanks Amazon!
