Book Description

2 Aug 2007 Cambridge Companions to Literature
Primo Levi (1919–1987) was the author of a rich body of work, including memoirs and reflections on Auschwitz, poetry, science fiction, historical fiction and essays. In particular, his lucid and direct accounts of his time at Auschwitz, begun immediately after liberation in 1945 and sustained until weeks before his suicide in 1987, has made him one of the most admired of all Holocaust writer-survivors and one of the best guides we have for the interrogation of that horrific event. But there is also more to Levi than the voice of the witness. He has increasingly come to be recognised as one of the major literary voices of the twentieth century. This Companion brings together leading specialists on Levi and scholars in the fields of Holocaust studies, Italian literature and language, and literature and science, to offer a stimulating introduction to all aspects of the work of this extraordinary writer.

Review

'It is good to see Levi join the illustrious ranks of writers warranting an individual volume in this useful series … The volume will be useful both to new readers and to those familiar with Levi's work. … If Cambridge Companions aim to direct the reader to a writer's work with genuine interest and insight, this volume achieves that goal admirably …' Modern Language Review

'This volume can be used by both students and general readers who want to discover the essential themes and context of Levi's cross-fertilising and inspiring body of work.' The European Legacy

As always, this Cambridge Companion offers an unbiased and hugely informative range of essays. What I liked most was the emphasis on parts of Levi's writing which usually fades into the background, such as his science fiction for example. Levi was undoubtedly an important voice of the Holocaust and Auschwitz; however, he deserves to be remembered for so much more than that. I'd definitely recommend this book as a starting point for anyone studying Levi.

After having read this masterpiece, I'm glad to say that it keeps with the tradition of the Cambridge publications - an absolute must-have. I feel that all of the contributions are well placed, necessary, and insightful. Each of the contributors have a reverence for and equally passionate disposition to Levi's message and experience. Thank you for this book.
